These are really nice. My wife watched with me, and you have convinced her to say make these for me. Lol. I appreciate how you don’t edit out things like the broken drill bit. For us long time woodworkers (30+ years and I’m 64) we all have done this very same thing.

I watched this video then realized: I have enough spare wood that I saved from old projects to make this without spending a dime. I even had some old waste scraps of composite decking to use on the bottom of the box so it won’t rot out the bottom. Thank for this!

I saw another idea where they put PVC tube (cut lengthwise to serve as a water slide and out the side) across the middle shelf, then lined it so any water would drain to the tube and out, protecting the bottom shelf.

My wife walked in and saw me watching this, sat down on the couch and actually got out a pen and paper and TOOK NOTES for a materials list. She then went to the bedroom, got on her YT account, looked up Matts channel and planned my next two weekends. I've only been watching Matt for a couple days. Suggestion: At about 3:1`4 you go through marking the center on all four sides of the rail. I have found an easier way to do this. Use a test piece, mark one and if it is correct, put a stop block at the other end and then all four will come out at that same point (midpoint) just by rotating the rail. You can make all the "points" with just one setting of the stop block.

I built two of the large planters and it cost me $240.😢 I used pressure treated 2x8s for the frame, cedar fence pickets where the dirt is and free pine for the bottom shelf. I also added a shelf on the side at the top for a work surface. I built these for Mothers Day and my mom was over joyed with them. Thanks for the plans.

Nice work. Suggestion. Seal the fence pickets inside and out. Moisture will get trapped between the liner and the pickets leading to early failure.

@@crippledcrippled Acrylic Latex based stain and sealer. Pick the brand and the color you like they are all about the same. For rough cedar a semi translucent works well. If you sand it down smooth a clear coat looks pretty cool.

I'm a big fan of the cedar and black trim look - very sharp. I have done the same thing with drill bits - in one case (I was so done that day) it became the screw. Good stuff Matthew!

As usual, these are nice and different. Have you ever considered thinking through a design for a chuck box/patrol box for kitchen items while camping? I have been trying to work through designs myself lately, but your designs are always very thoughtful and functional. BTW.... I built one of your obelisks in under an hour the first time I did it. Perfect “Mothers Day” project. It’s easy to just use a thick mil garbage bag/plastic liner stapled to the inside. Put a mulch layer down for the bottom 1/2 or so, top up with potting soil - not garden soil. Stick in a few herbs & geraniums, put a nice layer of mulch or sphagnum as the final layer.

Keep them coming man!I. I really like this idea, The black makes the cedar pop. I would use cedar for everything,. Probably get some rough sawn 2 by material (which is 1¾ x 3¾) to rip the legs out of.

I’m not surprised that Kreg countersink bit broke on you. It’s junk, in my opinion. The one I have won’t stay together. Very disappointing. Every other Kreg application I have is dope. I broke a 1/16th inch counterbore bit in white oak. I just left it there. Used that piece as a hammering block.

So you got jinxed by your camera man! Started when putting on you Mortal Combat mask. Then you dropped the boards. Bit came off, then broke! Dang camera man makes you nervous. This is all examples of what really happens sometimes in real life. Don’t forget the air compressor! Awesome build as always! Keep the mistakes as it makes you human and others see this and don’t get frustrated as bad because you did . Keep the builds and advice coming!

Garden felt is permeable and does not seal in the water, rather just keeps the soil from washing out... It will allow the excess water to drain.

Hi Matt, long time viewer here. I've been having problems with glue releasing when I glue parts together that are pre-stained. This has led to some of my two-toned projects literally falling apart after a short time. Ive tried several wood glues and construction adhesives; however, they all have the same result if the wood is pre-stained. Any suggestions???

I'm pretty sure the planters shown in the video are much bigger than the measurements he gives. Especially if he's elbow to elbow looking through the side with plenty of space, that not 33" 😅 but I love this design regardless!

I will address it in the next build video. You are correct. The wood glue really needs to get into the pores for a good glue up. I only use it when I'm using pocket hole screws as you don't need glue with them. I just do it as a backup.

I wonder about the long-term endurance of the rail to leg joinery. Did you consider a half-lap joint for that rather than a screw into end grain?

Each screw can hold 90 pounds. As long as you aren’t standing on it, it should be fine.

Does the soil need to be that deep necessarily? It seems that most of these planters require more soil than needed, and could be built a little more shallow. Is there a standard depth that most plants need? I'm thinking that the less soil used, the better, without compromising things of course.

To answer my own question, yes it needs to be that deep. Larger plants will reach all the way down to the bottom. I put a layer of stones down for good drainage first, and then soil on top.

From experience make sure that the insides are very well sealed and the outside if you’re putting them outdoors otherwise your handiwork will rot!

An option for the bottom shelf; enclose it but have a door in the front. Would make a dry, and safer spot for some package deliveries. Maybe keep some porch pirates at bay. Out of sight, out of mind.

I've always been told wood glue won't adhere to paint or stain. I've noticed on this and a few other of your projects, you glue wood to paint, have you had any issues with this long term? Maybe people are being overly cautious when they say it doesn't work.

Where's it supposed to drain? Soil without drainage means mold and bacteria will sit in the bottom and kill all your plants. And with your design if there were holes they would drip on to your shelf and your pine or hemlock framing will warp. I'd like to see one of these after a year.

It mentions the liner multiple times in the video....maybe that will help with the drips😂😂 there's lots of way to incorporate drainage into planters that don't require an outflow, just need to be creative.

Matty baby, The cedar is awfully bright and colorful compared to what's available for me locally. It looks like you put some sort of clear coat or something else on it? Or did you honestly put nothing on it? Especially in the thumbnail the colors of the cedar really pop

I always put a finish coat on projects. It’s optional, but I use spare urethane. It’s for outdoor builds.

Would the 1/16" gaps he puts in between the wood work as drainage? I'm genuinely asking. Since I don't plant anything ever, maybe I am very ignorant to think that the 1/16th inch gaps are enough gap to act as drainage?? Seriously, I would really like someone to answer my question/comment before I make these. I am more interested in woodworking than plants, but I would like to make items that work.
