Your little "scare" reminded me of my college roommate, Steve. Shortly after we became roommates, I was in the shower one morning. I had just finished my shower and had taken my towel off the shower door to dry myself off. Just then the shower door opened and there was Steve in boxer shorts, a t-shirt with eyeholes cut in it over his head and a large butcher's knife in his hand. Rather than scream, I paused for a second and then calmly said, "Good morning, Steve."

DeHerg I was just minding my own business, Steve was the weird one. Just saying, "Good morning, Steve," kept him from bothering me again. One time he said that the Mafia was after him for gambling debts. I don't know whether to believe that or not. One time he ripped out all the pages of a Bible and taped them to the walls and ceiling in the hallway of our suite. Each suite had six dorm rooms (one single and five doubles), two bathrooms, a common room with two couches, mini-fridge, two burner electric range, counter and storage space. Our suite became known as the "Art Suite" since we had so many art majors in our suite. One of my suite-mates was my Best Man at both of my weddings.

Actually, there's a flight, fight and freeze reaction. Freeze is often forgotten, but just think of a deer in headlights or "playing dead". And serotonin can be related to different anxieties as well. Like, for example, if I take sertraline (increases serotonin levels) it could help with not only my depression but my social phobia as well! Or any other anxiety disorder that I may or may not have in this scenario

I'm glad he got this part of "psychological is biological" out of the way. It generally gets my goat when people claim the mind is immaterial because we "think of immaterial things" (despite we haven't proven those ideas are in any way existing outside of our personal bias). I will think the mind is immaterial once we have an instance of mind without a body that we can observe and say "yeah, it's intelligent and interacting, but it lacks a body to maintain it"
@mzdimplz93
10 жыл бұрын
But if there was a mind existing without a body we would have no way of detecting it because its immaterial
@RPGgrenade
10 жыл бұрын
Unless it interacted with our physical plain in some way. I have no interest in learning about any sort of immaterial "mind" that exists in our plane of existence and isn't willing to show itself. Because if it isn't willing to show itself, and there is no way of understanding it, in any way whatsoever, then we might as well dismiss it as non-existent as even those who claim it to be real have no real proof of its existence. I believe in things for which there is evidence, because the immaterial presents no evidence, and affects the physical world in no way, therefore, it is of no consequence to our lives, unless you assume it to be true and decide to go purely on that "gut" feeling which is about as reliable as a baseball bat made of liquid water.

Well my brain reaction is so slow my mind was able to realize what was happening and chill out before my fight response knew wtf was going on lol

I think hanging around the shooting range has made me somewhat "numb" to sudden loud noises. I used to be kinda skittish like normal people, but now it seems my brain holds on for a second to see whats going on before reacting to anything. Weird how it changed over the time of a few years.

So that's a way to train yourself to stay calm huh. Isn't your brain a wonderful thing?

Ola Ruud I also no longer react to things like that. I also go to the shooting range a lot. It would be interesting to see the results of a study on people who participate in shooting sports to see the difference in reactions to sudden stimulus.

Same here, Kyle I'd like to be able to say that I get punched in the face so much that I don't get scared by stuff like that anymore, but the truth is that I just didn't know what was happening until he had already begun explaining that he had just freaked me out.

I've only heard a gun fired once, and the jump-scare did nothing for me. I'm not sure it's training so much as just having a crappy flight or fight response. If my complete failure to react whatsoever was any indication, I'm screwed if a lion is behind me right now. Oh shi-

Mitchell Same XD I've pretty much given up on notes; I'm going to go through the Crash Course and THEN come back and take notes and try to remember everything that just got shoved into my brain.

Funny, with me I prefer to mute the video and just find the picture. It's the sound from jump scares that messes with me.

I’ve got a slow reaction time so I actually ended up jumping like five seconds after you played the screech. I’m honestly always like this, idk how I haven’t gotten myself killed yet
