Originally opened as the Cherokee State Hospital for the insane in 1902, the facility would ultimately come to be knonw as the Cherokee Mental Health Institute and it remains in operation to this very day. Located in the town of Cherokee, Iowa, at the facilities height it housed 1,749 patients. Today the facility house an average of 44 patients - ranging from adolescents to adults - and it also houses the state's most dangerous sex offenders, as well as its criminally insane, in a remodeled portion of the campus. This portion of the campus, surrounded by prison-grade fencing and razor wire, resembles more of a high security state prison that a mental health facility.
