The Chesterfield Loop Continued - Lost Great Central Railway
The Chesterfield Loop ran between Staveley Central and Heath Junction on the Great Central Main Line. It was built by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, opening in 1892 as part of their Derbyshire lines. It became the GCR, later LNER and closed in the 1960s after years of decline. Dr Beeching put the axe on the railway, with stations closing in 1963-64.
The the last episode we looked at the northern end of the loop, between Staveley and Tapton, north of Chesterfield. We pick up the story near Tapton Lock on the Chesterfield Canal with an old photo showing the Midland Railway crossing the GCR, River Rother and Chesterfield Canal.
Through Chesterfield the A61 Chesterfield Relief Road takes the route of the line, but we've already covered this with Chesterfield Central and the Chesterfield Tunnel. We pick up with the now route of the A617 dual carriageway heading towards the M1.
We arrive after a few miles at the former station site at Grassmoor, which closed in 1940. The cutting of the station is now infilled and little evidence is left that there was even a railway running through the area, despite the numerous colliery brances.
The line rejoins the GCR mainline at Heath Junction a few miles east. Again, little remains apart from the occassional line of trees. After Heath Junction was the Heath Station. Again, the station is gone and industrial estates dominate the area. The blue brick bride abutments did survive and now support above the entrance to one of the estates.
