Come to Korea someday, where hotels run "specials" on Friday and charge a standard rate on Saturday. Let's say $75 on Friday and $100 on Saturday. These tend to be budget and/or "love" hotels. Can you book the whole weekend for $175 ? Never... You have to check out before noon Saturday, then come back after 5 p.m. to check back into the same room. If you want to stay in the room for those 5 hours you need to pay $200. Taylor come to Korea and make hotel revew videos !

I come back to KL in June for 3 months and going to do a bit more local travelling, so please keep these videos coming. As for the extra night stay it happens in all hotels sadly. Last year I spent 150 nights in hotels and was so called upgraded - same room but a fancier name and in some places I got so upgraded I felt like royalty and did not know how to behave. But it felt so good. In KLCC last year my accom cost kept increasing in price ( i have commented previously) and this time was quoted 5900RM a month but now has been reduced to 4500 so good to have that. But in Langkawi I stayed a a place last year was $190 aus a night in end of May went to book again and is now $740 a night yes $740 same room. I understand covid prices etc but that is taking the piss out of people. I look forward to more videos and your guidance. If I see you in the street do you mind people coming up and saying Hi? Thank you 🙏👍

I know the cpap is quite helpful for sleep apnea. I have apnea as well, but I found that lying on my side is the only fix I need. If I lie on my back then I have problems. Doctors rarely mention sleep positions, but it is widely known in the medical community. There are special pillows that can help with those position. Use the cpap, but it is good to have a backup. Apnea can cause all sorts of problems so be careful

Hi Andrew! Great to see this hotel review video! The original building that is today The Chow Kit is unlikely to have been built at the turn of the 20th century. Kuala Lumpur is not New York City. More likely it was built much later than that.

Oh Taylor, you bring back such good memories for me of that area. I grew up in KL in the late 70s, and there used to be old theatre near that hotel, called the Odeon. I watched Star Wars back there in 1977!! I guess the KL that I remember isn’t the same today.. so many charming coffee houses & quant shops (like the Globe Silk Store).. Anyway, I love KL, so full of life, and that crazy Asian vibe with a touch of British colony..

Believe it or not, the building was a budget Airasia hotel in it's previous life. The facade is a clever new cladding system to make it appear as if it was designed/constructed in 40s. The building is definitely not very old. Probably built in the 60s or 70s.

Loved your video, as always! I enjoyed your honest real review of the hotel - so many reviews are so syrupy positive you just know they are fake LOL. I've come across those blinking smoke/CO2 alarms in hotels as well; they are annoying I agree. I also agree about your interaction regarding extending your stay. I've had that happen to me as well! Another thing I noticed was how incredibly cheap the hotel was. Even at 390 Ringgit that is only USD$88. Unbelievable! Here in Christchurch, New Zealand a hotel of similar quality costs USD$185 per night! I'm hoping to come to Malaysia in July; I just took a look and saw that I can book a room at the Chow Kit for a week for an incredible (to me anyway) USD$400! Not nearly as nice a room as your upgrade but nonetheless amazing! Even a dumpy "Motel 6" type accommodation in NZ will set you back USD$600 for a week's stay.

Hello Taylor, Thank you for your fun, lighthearted videos! They have sweetly reminded me of the year I lived in KL while teaching at ISKL. Wished I could have stayed longer. I was often frustrated by the lack of customer service in mall shops. On the other hand, I needed to remind myself that I was judging situations from my Western point of view. I’m sure I acted in ethnocentric and even a little entitled ways at times. Perhaps the desk clerk wasn’t sure how to tell you, a white, “rich,” foreigner “no”? Or Perhaps they thought you were being rude for asking for the same discounted rate when you knew you had been given an upgrade? (I would have looked into it too!) At any rate, miscommunications are part of living abroad, I guess.Lucky and brave you for taking the plunge. You’ve made me think about the possibility of retiring abroad again. 😊

Taylor, you didn't do anything wrong, but it would have been better if you'd said up front that you'd had an upgrade last night, were thinking of extending a night and wondered if you could have the same rate for your room for another night. If they normally only do an upgrade once, the clerk could have immediately apoligized and explained that as an answer. But just asking, as you did, if you could have another night for the same rate you had last night could be construed as simply asking because sometimes rates change depending on the day of the week, season, etc. You're right that the clerk did a poor job, though. When he gave his evasive answer, I would have said "can't I have my same room at the same rate?" forcing him to either agree, or tell me why not. Then you would have had a better idea about whether you were being treated according to the hotel's policy or not, and whether the clerk was just inept at courtesy, or actually unhelpful. I use CPAP too. Good reason to need power for sleeping !

I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the front-desk staff but I think it's also got something to do with English not being the primary or first language for many in this part of the world. So the focus was probably on the task at hand and getting the message across, not on the delivery of that message. Sometimes it's a bit hard to put things across nicely because you've not really been exposed to that kind of delivery style. Having said that, the hotel can certainly do a better job by investing in staff training.

After and during covid19 many good staff were retrenched or left the hospitality industry. Most never came back. But new staff lack the knowledge and experience.
