In October 2023, crew leader Baxter and firefighter James were deployed to the town of Jennings on the Queensland-New South Wales border to serve as Community Field Liaison Officers. Extreme fire danger conditions were expected for the day and several large fires were already burning in nearby Queensland and the surrounding areas.
As the conditions deteriorated and multiple fire fronts began threatening the town, they displayed outstanding commitment in assisting many elderly and vulnerable community members to prepare and implement their bush fire survival plans. At the height of the emergency, they supported the safety and well-being of 150 people. Their leadership, clear instructions and empathetic approach provided crucial physical and phycological support to community members.
Held on the fourth of May, St Florian’s Day is the International Day of Firefighters. To mark the occasion each year, the RFS takes the opportunity to recognise its members’ acts of bravery and outstanding service. This year, crew leader Kristie Baxter and firefighter Catherine James were awarded the Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation for their contribution to the safety of the community.
You can find all the details of our worthy recipients on the RFS website.
