My favorite verse of this hymn says, "elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth; her charter of salvation one God, one Faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued." it reminds me that eventually our shameful divisions will be healed, and Catholics and Lutherans and Presbyterians and everybody will again be the obviously "one holy, catholic, and apostolic church," that we confess most Sundays.

Awesome hymn performance! This hymn was written by Samuel J. Stone in 1866 and composed by Samuel S. Wesley, the grandson of Charles Wesley who composed numerous hymns! Not all the verses are in the hymnals today but it is and always will be wonderful hymn of our Lord Jesus Christ as the Church's Living Foundation! Blessings to All! Lynnae Larson CT US

Hi Pablo, I was at Belhaven from 1973 to 1977. Maybe we crossed paths without ever meeting. The organist in this video, Bill Wymond, was there at the time and has been continuously at this church since the 1960's (other than a few years in which he went to a different church, in Memphis, I think it was). Technically, he is "music director" now and someone else holds the title of "organist."

The hymn's lyrics were written by Anglican priest Samuel John Stone in South Africa in 1860, in response to the unorthodox teaching of South African bishop, John Colenso. The tune used in most settings of the hymn is "Aurelia," which was composed by Samuel Wesley, grandsom of Charles Wesley. The tune and the lyrics were not composed together.

Some of the chords are variation of the hymn tune I think I'm hearing. Still lovely, but I was taught play the music as the composer wrote it. True or False?
@drc3po

True. This performance is an example of the fine art of alternative harmonization. This version would not work for congregational singing, but such singing can be greatly enhanced with a mixture of original composition and alternative chords.

Chester.......Your statement reveals your unsophisticated musical sense. Any hymn tune can be improvised upon. Do you not understand that when Bach composed his chorale work, that each one was nothing more than an expansion of hymn tunes that were contemporaneously known to his audience. The educated organist can expanded any hymn tune even for congregational singing. This presentation is a hymn tune expansion and not the hymn tune you see printed in your hymnal.

The church is built upon the foundatuon of the apostles and prophets, Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone. Ephesians 2v20 . Jesud is coming back for one church. The people who are called by His name. Who are buried by baptism in his name, filied with the Holy Ghost and continuing to worship him through faith.

A bit mushy and a bit to long. However this organist was not playing a church service and some of people commenting don't seem to get. The opening tempo was so wonderful and correct. So many organist play hymns way too fast and little legato. He did not do that. He is extremely gifted and plays with great imagination and style. It started to get too long despite has great talent. I get out of patience, however with comments from people who could not even begin to play anything close to that. They either attend or play in a one horse church and have never been exposed to such quality. I have great respect for quality Roman Catholic liturgy but some comments from some their members show they never hear any real. Organ music and know nothing about hymns. Vatican 2 killed so much. I have some friends who are Catholic organists and some of their churches are really coming back. This organist, who played would be snapped up or has been by any quality church. Despite the length it was still far above than most. Thank you.

Why add so much extra reverberation? it spoiled it.
@drc3po
8 жыл бұрын
+goodchappy You can't add reverb to a pipe organ, nor was any added in the recording equipment. You are hearing the acoustics of the building.
@Goodchappy
8 жыл бұрын
+drc3po The reason I said about extra reverb is because on the last chord I can hear a slightly metallic "wa wa wa" bounce which is not a natural reverb of a church building but caused by a reverberation commonly used in computer sound cards. As an organist and having been involved in building pipe organs, I know that you cannot add reverb to a pipe organ, only the recording of it :-)
@drc3po
8 жыл бұрын
+goodchappy I think this is the explanation--it was recorded on a machine that is designed to record the sermons and replicate them onto cassette tapes to be distributed to shut-ins. The copy I received from the organist was a CD burned from such a cassette. So there you go--we'll blame it on 20th century technology!

That's the problem with "Private Interpretation" of Sacred Scripture, which we are forbidden to do. WAAAAAY before the Bible, was the Universal Church, first called the "Catholic" Church in 107A.D. It was among the Early Church Fathers, the 2nd Century and 3rd Century Early Fathers, who put forth to compile, transcribe and promulgate the Canon of Scripture. But when Jesus said, "He who hears the Church, hears Me. He that rejects the Church, rejects me." It is clear we are not to privately interpret Scripture: "Understanding this first, that no prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation." [2 Peter 1:20] --- {it was the Church, that produced the Bible, and the Church pre-dated the Bible, and was given Authority to teach}

The Ten Commandments (including the Sabbath commandment "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work, but the seventh day (Saturday) is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God's....") were WAAAAAY before the "Catholic" church... it even proceeded the nation of Israel in the wilderness.... Saturday (Sabbath keeping) is NOT or private interpretation! It is a COMMAND of God Himself, and kept by Jesus Christ himself!!! Holy men of God produced the Scriptures as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.... not the church! You need to get educated!

Well, I try to get by with the scant few brain cells I have been allowed. It's all any of us can do. I fall into that line of tradition that flows through Harnack, Schweitzer, Bonhoeffer, Bultmann, and Tillich. Orthodoxy vs. heresy in the sense of, say, John Calvin vs. Pelagius or Marcion or whoever, is largely meaningless in German academic theology..
