The Churchyard of St James, Altham
Lancashire
Founded in 1140 and originally dedicated to Saint Mary, the Church of St James is located in the village of Altham. The earliest parts of the present church structure date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Significant changes occurred in 1859, including the construction of the tower and the rebuilding of the chancel, overseen by Thomas Hacking. In 1881, a chapel was rebuilt by the Lancaster architects Paley. The graveyard contains gravestones dating from the 1600’s and 1700’s as well as more contemporary memorials.
