It pleases me that the word "hoot" is in your vocabulary; it is one of my favorite words.

I recently purchased a cimbasso from a company called O’Malley which also uses a China factory, and they do wrap the case in a foam layer before putting it in the box. I’ve noticed a lot of the same points you brought up with my own instrument: there’s some minor impractical assembly choices, strange note slotting, all that. But boy is it fun, and I can’t understate it. I’m glad we could have a bit of a shared experience!

I have one of these that I got for $2.6k off of reverb in the key of F. I currently pair it with a Denis Wick Classic 2SL which is a wide but shallow tuba mouthpiece and it sounds fantastic! One thing that I had done to it was removing the right hand thumb ring completely because it was horrendous to play with it there. I also had to have the 2nd tuning slide lever soldered because it would keep coming apart... Other than that, $2.6k for a cimbasso? Can't complain.

Can you tell us what the 5th valve does, please. And why is the trigger on the 2nd valve slide and not the 1st or 3rd like a trumpet?
@mjkiii9603

99% of fifth valves on tuba like instruments are a flat whole step, so kind of like an additional 1st valve but tuned a little lower. It helps with intonation in the low register and gives you better finger choices down there. Tuba like instruments will occasionally have a 2nd valve tuning trigger. This is because generally the 2nd valve is the only tuning slide you don’t readily have access to. The others are located in a position that allows you to pull and push them with your hand as needed.

Hi Trent - I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a trumpet that would be good for an adult beginner? I’m on a budget and am looking for something reasonably priced but still usable. Thank you!

How do the valve combinations work? It doesn't appear to be compensating, so 4th valve (assuming it's like a Tuba) plus a couple of other valves is going to be way out of tune.

Unrelated to this video, but it would be amazing if you could make a video on exactly how the triggers on a bass trombone change where each slide position is. Also you make amazing, informative videos, I’ve learnt so much :)

The bell section is a very clumsy design in MHO. It needs to re-designed in a more vertically wrapped up way with the bell then pointed, say 45 deg upwards.
