They went to the same plays .....George Washington 's favourite play was Sheridan's The School for Scandal.

The Book Civil War of 1812 and Divided Ground should be read in all High Schools and become common Knowledge of every true American citizen..Alan Taylor Thank you..Finally in the long term we the United States really did not need to conquer Mexico either;but for the terrain and weather and extreme of penetration and sustainable forces there.

I enjoyed this lecture, this war was at the time a side show, and unwanted by the British who focus was on Napoleon, and the climax of decades of war. The arrogance of the the Leopard incident, and territorial ambitions on the Maddison. The numbers of British soldiers at the hight of the Napoleonic war in total, would be beyond a conquest of the republic. The financial exhaustion of the Napoleonic war, a billion pounds or 200% of GDP. The U.K. may still be paying it off ? Reading off an American account of the war of 1812 in a train, to my wife, whilst travelling in Canada, had the people in front correcting it with passion, to be join by the chap behind us. It was only our British accents that saved us.

This was the first time I heard the perspective that the war of 1812 was a civil war. Really interesting and sensible take on the human cultural dimension of the conflict. The US had cause to declare war and Canada was British but the invasions were laughably unthought out. Understand the times were primitive but they had excuse to know how much effort and material would be involved in succeeding in a land war. Britain was oafishly short sited to think they could board our ships and press gang our men, even burn our capital without consequence. Good thing the US was just a backwater to the British or they could have found the motivation to conquer the US if they cared to enough.

A country with the finest army and navy *in the world* vs a country not 30 years old and an army that the built as they went. "OK, we'll call it a draw."

They call it a draw because the Duke of Wellington didn't want to see fighting between British peoples, by which he also meant Americans. Fact is that the British sometimes pulled their punches in both the War of Independence and the War of 1812. The US took advantage when the British Empire's resources were being drained in the struggle against Napoleon.

That and the fact that the Duke of Wellington said that it would be impossible for the British to win. I never actually saw an example of the British "pulling their punches "Maybe I missed something.@@alvanrigby6361

After the war, the late loyalists were stripped of their citizenship and future immigration came from the UK, focusing on veterans of the Napoleonic wars who would be loyal to Britain. The government of Upper Canada then created a loyalist myth that Canadians, as British Americans were now called, had defended their country against the U.S. This myth would become similar to U.S. mythology about the Pilgrim fathers and the U.S. Revolution in creating cohesion. But it does not extend to the rest of the country.

All of these old wars (pre-american civil war) is quite strange, compared to more modern conflicts. Both medical, military and logistical science was in the dark ages. The decisions made, and the fighting has to evalued historically in that context.

Took serious work and bravery to overcome the obstacles of getting at the enemy, let alone fighting them. Dealing with the aftermath of battle in this period is beyond nightmarish. Native troops really had it best in this regard as they could live off the land and their medicine was less based on ignorance. Still Jackson firing grapeshot into the British in New Orleans reminds me of stories from Vietnam where close range scattershot artillery fire saved some US troops.
