Today I spoke with Dee Murphy and her daughter, Stacie Grahn. Dee grew up in Pentecostal Christianity, but ultimately deconverted as she examined the truth claims of Christianity. Her daughter also separately deconverted, and they now work together to help others escape Christianity.
We discussed many aspects of her story, including:
• Attending tent meeting revivals as a young child.
• Observing how people were considered "backslidden" if they didn't appear to be on a constant spiritual high.
• Hearing people give her a "message from god."
• Feeling the constant contrasting messages that the Yahweh character will never leave you, but if you backslide, you are in danger of demons now and a literal lake of fire in hell after death.
• Believing that any doubts were evidence of the devil trying to tempt her away from god.
• Believing that angels and demons were part of an invisible world all around her, fighting all the time, and that any sin or lack of faith would empower the demons.
• Thinking that demons could attach themselves to objects, so buying things was problematic, especially if you had no way of knowing where the object had been you bought it.
• Anointing the house with oil to ward off demons.
• Being afraid of the dark, due to feeling like demons could be present.
• Praying for salvation many times to be sure she was truly saved.
• Moving away from charismatic Christianity toward Calvinism.
• Feeling like she could "breathe" for the first time as she deconstructed the truth claims of Christianity.
• The feeling of "finally being truthful with herself" when she admitted that the Christian worldview does not reflect reality.
• Being physically in but mentally out of Christianity for several years.
• Realizing, after deconverting, the fragility, briefness, and preciousness of our lives.
• How Christians severely disrespect and abuse people who deconvert from Christianity.
• The peace and beauty of life after deconversion.
• The importance of empowering children to have a strong voice and to question the narratives given to them by adults.
Many thanks to Dee and Stacie for sharing their story!
