This was the album that got me into The Clash. When I had my piece of shit car as a 16 year old, I started a CD collection. I knew of The Clash, so when I saw London Calling for 5 dollars on CD, I snagged it. Never listened to the album before then. Its one of my all time favorites now, 10 years later. I also snagged a bone white vinyl of The Clash live in Japan, 1980, and I havent been able to find that album anywhere online. It was an import vinyl. I love that thing.

KageTV exactly! i love bands like the clash and the stranglers because they were embracing and experimenting with the sounds of hip hop way earlier than you would think in retrospect. the gospel according to the meninblack album has so many moments in it that sound completely out of time and hint at things that would come 10 or 15 years down the road in electronic music. i’d love to see a stranglers tier list from someone, but they’re a bit more obscure and i’m not sure if anthony is even a fan

I like Sandinista! a whole lot- like you said the great and even good songs hold up and have become a lot of my favorites over time. I really love Washington Bullets, Up In Heaven, Somebody got Murdered, Let's go Crazy, Song for Sinners, Junco Partner, Corner Soul and The Leader. I think the sound of the record is interesting and has more heart than it reveals at first. I always loved how Mick Jones said he rationalized the album was meant for people who worked on oil rigs who could only bring one album.

Galaxelen I guess sound diversity is a pretty big factor in my rankings. I definitely see Sandinista as having the most which is one reason why its my favorite album of theirs. I really really enjoy the self titled album, but they all have pretty much the same sound so that's why it's a B on my list. I will say that if I ranked more by how good all the songs on the album are I would agree with you more, pretty much every song on the self titled album is great and Sandinista is really bloated with a lot of crap.

"Give 'Em Enough Rope" is criminally underrated. I'm convinced part of the reason is that everyone knew that CBS brought on Blue Oyster Cult's producer too deliver a more polished product, so some fans think it's not hip to like that album too much. "Cut The Crap" was a terrible album but This Is England is great song despite the rest of the record. It's also worth noting that there's actually two versions of the debut album, UK version and US version with different song listings on each. The US version replaces some of the songs with later singles like White Man in Hammersmith, etc. Again, because CBS thought the original version was "too raw."

Not true, American punk come first with Iggy and the Stooges, and the New York Dolls. I Wanna Be Your Dog came out as a single in 1969. Personality Crisis/Looking For A Kiss was released in 1973. Sid Vicious and Johnny Thunders got the idea to rip their shirts up and wear close pins on them from Johnny Thunders who was in the New York Dolls. You should read Please Kill Me by Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil. It's a history of the origins of the punk scene in America. Way before the Clash or the Damned.

Anderson Cooper I don’t feel like repetitive can really be used as a knock on the song if you like The End which is ten minutes of mostly the same riff.

thanks for doing this video!!!! I've been wanting you to do something on the clash forever, especially Sandinista! I agree with a lot of your opinions on it but I would put it as an A tier, especially if you were to take out some of the "unnecessary" tracks. there are some really amazing tracks on this and the diversity and ambitiousness is really exceptional especially for a punk band of their era. I definitely do think that a London Calling quality album is hidden within the totality of what was released and i think about it all the time lol. I've ranted about it probably more than anybody ever has. again, so glad you did this video and GREAT to hear your thoughts on this album, very happy to hear you saw the same potential in it that i do!!!!!

I love the ridiculousness of Sandinista! One pop song with its dub B-side right after it, children singing, disco drums-it’s super fun and serious at the same time. Basic opinion tho: “Rock the Casbah” is their best song period 😤

@Dark Requiem Oh god, I just realized that they covered multiple songs from the albums on my profile pic, 1 song from Hybrid Theory, 2 songs from Under My Skin, 1 Song from Boys Like Girls, 2 songs from American Idiot, 2 songs from Move Along and worst of all they probably would've done a couple tracks from Jagged Little Pill if they were around in the mid 90s

Personally I hate almost all pop punk but, it’s gotta be worse when Kidz Bop is covering your stuff. With that being said, look up “Kidz Bop Feel Good Inc”, you won’t believe what you’ll hear.

@Dark requiem It's absolutely atrocious, but I can't even say that it's the worst thing they've done since they also covered My Immortal and How To Save A Life with no changed lyrics

Duncan Darnell I’m sure people will disagree with me but for my personal taste I’d check out pink flag by wire zen arcade by Hüsker du and entertainment by Gang of Four. I feel like those fit that “acclaimed artsy” punk mold that London calling falls into and people kinda stopped talking about them

@@anguishingquark Classic UK Punk: The Members first two albums (1979/1980) - these guys are hugely underrated I reckon and I think were good pals with the Clash, also lots of reggae influences here and there. Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material. Skids - Dunfermline. Rezillos - Can't Stand The Rezillos, these guys are kinda like super early pop punk but I love it. The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette, amazing album but tbh I think the horrible production sort of spoils it. Oh and The Ruts! (first two albums)

I love Joe Strummer as a frontman and even as a songwriter in a lot of respects, but Cut the Crap is proof that Mick Jones was most definitely the glue that kept them together as a band. I’m a huge Big Audio Dynamite fan too so I guess i’m a little biased, but anyway... great list!!

For me it's S - London Calling (my fav album of all time), Combat Rock (I actually think this gets slightly underrated. I think every song is a 10/10) A - Sandinista! (I want to put this in S so badly, but there's undeniably a lot of filler), Give 'Em Enough Rope (those first 3 tracks, my god), self-titled (Great punk album) Z - Cut the Crap
