In 1987 the Restormel Borough Council blew up a cave called the Banqueting Hall between Porth Beach and Whipsiderry with 3.5 tonnes of dynamite.
The cave was an old mine from which metallic ores had been extracted, leaving a vast cavern 200 feet long, 60 feet wide and 60 feet high. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the venue for very special concerts lit by candlelight. A piano was even brought to the cave! The concerts raised money to repair and maintain the steps at two nearby coves, Whipsiderry and 'List-an-Gaze' or Lusty Glaze as we known it today.
When the Council acquired the land, the roof of the cave had already begun to collapse and secret surveys were carried out. The Council decided to collapse the roof of the cave by drilling 56 holes and packing them with 3.5 tonnes of dynamite and in 1987 it was blown up.
Today there is only a faint change in colour on the cliff face and some very regular, unnatural shaped rocks to be seen. But could they have saved the cave for posterity?
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZitem, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
We love your comments and read all of them. We also answer as many as possible. Unfortunately, we cannot answer comments received more than a week after publication.
