DeathsCastile Obama has not done much for the U.S. economy. He has yet to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans (remember, top earners tax rates were at 90 percent during WW2 and the economy grew faster than any other time in the 20th century), he has yet to raise the federal minimum wage, and Obamacare is a far cry from a successful government program. Had he not catered to the right-wing with Obamacare we could have had a single-payer healthcare system, which would have been an FDR-esque move.
@deathscastile9308

The problem being that he has to work around 80 years of new legislation that was put up by monetary puppets and figureheads like George Bush. The entire reason the economy crashed is because of George Bush being the puppet for [Insert Conspiracy or Billionaire Here] and tearing down half of the work that FDR had put in place. Included in that is housing legislation, of which other select presidents helped put in place as well. The housing market collapsed because of Bush's narrow minded ransacking of housing legislation. He went and put in new legislation that said that anybody with two shoes could buy a 300,000$ house, I mean come one, what was he thinking... He reorganized how everything could work, so people just went and reprinted a non-existent woman's signature on thousands of housing leases, loans and filings. That's why half of the notes that debt collectors try and collect on are completely invalid. For all we know, thousands of homes just have no owner. The banks, being the ones who did this, just up and collapsed for being total fucking imbeciles, and the government had to come in and clean up their mess. The housing bubble popping had a ripple effect, destroying large portions of the economy, killing off thousands of businesses, and making the job as president suck. That's not even the forefront of the problems brought on by the recession. Even when that's added up, we have the racist, white, Christian majority GOP hating Obama with every fiber of their being for being not only a Democrat, but black too! They pulled every trick in the book to halt his progress, even going so far as to go on national television and announce that they refuse to work with him to restore their crippled economy. I mean, the list of shit goes on and on. It goes from economy, to public opposition, to foreign affairs, to everything few and far between. Our country was a mess. Obama has been dealing with a bloody mess for six years, of course it's hard to get shit done! And you guessed it, Hilary Clinton will be Truman, she's going to sweep in with her huge approval poles and do all the stuff Obama couldn't and we'll hope to god that our kids don't fuck things up again in 80 years.

One of the things I found interesting about this series- and other attempts to write national/world histories- is that in the more distant past the history is written through several approaches- cultural, scientific/technological, political, economic- and yet as you approach the present it becomes more narrowly political and economic. In your case that shift more or less happens around the time of Nixon's presidency, and from thereon the discussion is mostly political and economic. For example, the USA was arguably the scientific centre in the world in the 1950s and 1960s, but this isn't really discussed; meanwhile, the internet had serious scientific, cultural and even philosophical consequences, but here it's discussed in mostly economic terms. The same goes for any discussion of American movies, books, music etc. since WWII and whether they had any significant impact on the nation's history. It's not really a criticism, because historians in general often face big difficulties narrating broader histories for the recent past. I suppose it must be difficult to know what to include, and I guess there's just a dizzying amount of stuff to say. Any more thoughts on why the recent past gives historians so much difficulty?

European History is much richer (as is any regional history) than what they just covered in world history. I point to European History because western tendencies (which originated and were developed in Europe) are the most important in the modern world. It's good to learn about how these ideas (modern democracy, capitalism, socialism, communism, existentialism, and countless others) came about, in which context, in response to what events (for example, Hobbes wrote the Leviathan during the English Civil war and Locke wrote the Second Treatise during the Glorious Revolution; each was greatly impacted by the respective events), in what order, and in relation to other movements (like enlightenment philosophy and neoclassical painting). Western ideas (for better or worse) form the core and basis of the modern world. Examining where these ideas came about and how is of great importance to understanding our contemporary world. Also, when I say European History, I mean starting after the end of the Carolingian Empire. It was at this time that Europe as we know it started to form. Before this (Dark Ages and Carolingian Empire), Europe was really just "Post Rome." Of course these times are important to European History, but we want to study Europe as a historical object, not Rome. I may have gone over the top, but whatever.
@rockCity777
10 жыл бұрын
No no, that was good that you clarified that. I was thinking they would be repeating themselves if they started at hellenic cultures (as european history courses usually do) and that kind of categorization would seem like at least a partially great idea. I would say that the greatest weakness would be the ear shattering depth of clashing regional histories, even if you only concentrate on the bigger countries. ...Would be nice to get an outsider perspective on scandinavian history, though.
@ethanlevine1935
10 жыл бұрын
rockCity777 At times in European History (at least the timeline I mentioned), Scandinavian History becomes very important. At almost the onset of a European History course, discussion of Viking expansion occurs because it is important to the development of modern Easter Europe and the British Isles (as well as a sort of rebirth of maritime trade in Europe). Other times (like with Gustavus Adolphus and especially in modern times when discussing differences between types of welfare states (like Nordic vs. Rhenish vs. Anglo-Saxon vs. Mediterranean)) discussion of Scandinavian history becomes very important as well. Unfortunately, Scandinavian history is usually not the focus of a European history course because nations of Scandinavia typically never led Europe in terms of pure political power, economics and trade, art, philosophy, or science. At times Scandinavia was very influential, but mostly a European history course has an epicenter in Western-Central Continental Europe (focus can differ: like Italy is very important during the Renaissance, drops out of importance (except of Papal issues), and then reemerges prior to WW1; Spain is not really important until 1492, then they become the epicenter, then they drop out some time in the 1600s, usually after the Armada fails and power on the Continent shifts between France and German states). I would like to one day study Scandinavian history in and of itself, but, in regards to a European History course, Scandinavia is usually not the central object of study.

Cultural diversity, LGBT community, black lives matter, it hasn't made this country better and is only better to those who support it, for others, and in general, it has on a drastic scale split the country in half, and morals, especially the ones that made this country great, have gone down the hill, more and more people becoming hostile to religious groups that in particular are against the LBGT community and so on. Basically, to achieve the equality and peace wanted, we must become hostile to those who defy something that is against there beliefs. If social and political change happens at the rate it is, soon, there will be no morals, and more than evidently, morals built on a false and in accurate, plus on some levels immature; will control the minds of people, and hush those who disagree, basically doing that of which the old ways did to gays but opposite. So, in my opinion, there should be a rate at which we progress, not at an alarming rate like we see.

@moth1ne

Justanotherdamnguy Ok, well a few things. First, the outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs has been pretty devastating to the American economy and has lead to further income inequality. Manufacturers move jobs to Mexico where they don't have the same labor regulations and can pay Mexican factory workers a fraction of what they would have to pay American workers. Sure, Mexico has become a manufacturing hub, but at the expense of the Mexican agricultural industry. Corn prices in Mexico just can't compete with American corn and as a result, Mexican farmers have abandoned the fields and their livelihoods. Thousands of Mexican farmers have taken to the streets in protest of NAFTA subsidies, something like 130,000 in 2008. Sure you can argue that NAFTA has lead to an overall expanse in the GDP, but the benefits are largely only reaped by the wealthiest Americans.

Tyler Wisner I would probably agree with the importance you're putting on self education and being inquisitive, but that doesn't make it objectively wrong to want to focus on social trends and pop culture. You're not better than them, you're just doing more of what you value the most. They probably feel you're doing less of what they value and think less of you for the same reason. Be the better person and just be kind and understanding that other people value other things and sometimes that will make intellectual conversation impossible and possibly incredibly frustrating. :) How about this for a thought: you're watching educational videos on youtube while other people are actively building and innovating. Are you less important? Are you worse? Are you less worthy? Intellect is both a web and a gradient and looking down hill isn't really worth the effort and sure as hell wont teach you much. There's always someone who's going to think you're wasting your time on bullshit compared to them. Just focus on yourself and be smarter than you were yesterday. It'll work out fine for everyone.

So the terrorists that perpetrated 9/11 were able to come into and train for two to four years under his admin before the attacks, this after the '93 attack on the World Trade Center, which i and my brother tradesmen repaired the Somalia Debacle, Countless other Terrorist attacks on Embassies, and Americans around the Globe, and lest We forget, Chinagate, where Bill ""allowed TOP SECRET MILITARY INFO, to go to China, through HIS DONORS. Treason in the Simplest, form, and HIGH TREASON, In MY BOOK> He should have been Tried. I wonder why He wasn't held accountable. And with all his Preying on Women, and Hitlery's personal funding in smearing those same women, Bill either Raped, or Sexually Assaulted, She knew every step of the way, so She allowed the Rape Culture to go on, and she claims to be a Feminist.. Let's see, She was fired for LYING and UN-Ethical actions when involved in Nixon Proceedings, { By Her Democrat Boss}, SHe Lied In the case of a Pedophilie Rapist, that she represented Who's 12 year old Victim, was in a Coma from her clients and his accomplice's BEATING and RAPING, and the Victim, could NEVER have Children Because of the severity of the Brutal assault , to her Abiding and Abetting Bill's Raping, and Preying, on Young Women, To Lying, {yes , again} when she Set up, and was involved in Vince Foster's Death, Chris Stevenson's Death, in Benghazi, Only the sixth American Ambassador killed since Our Country Began, and the first Since Jimmy Carter in the late Seventies. who, in my book, was the worst pResident, until Obama. Who has definitively took first place for the worst pResident of the White Mosque { since HE has claimed to be MuSlime three times}. And Hitlery herself, has brought up Barry's Place Of Birth. Oh, The Tangled Web She Weaves. Black Widow, Google, How many people have died, Who were personally involved with the Clintons, and their Personal Businesses, and the Dirt involved. As for 9/11/01, I had already served, been out, but when that shit happened, I attempted to go back in, and My MasterGunny Brother told me , 'You Did your part, you did what had to be done, let the next generation do their part" . I'll always wonder if I could've helped, even a little bit. . . . SEMPER FI. . . '83-88. . . .Carry On. .

Clinton is still very well regarded in Ireland where his efforts had a massive impact in establishing peace in Northern Ireland. Maybe not so important on a macro level but an achievement that many commentators thought impossible at the time.

The increased partisanship (which will probably be dealt with more in the few remaining episodes) was certainly fueled by the internet, but didn't some of the communications deregulation in the 1980s or 1990s make Fox News legally possible where before it was not?

I have no idea how you could include Don't Ask Don't Tell as a failure if you're a proponent of gay rights. Civil Rights has historically, as *you* have pointed out in your videos, been a matter of "baby steps". No, it wasn't a sweeping reform, but considering the state of our country *even now* the compromise was a massive accomplishment, and should only be viewed as such.
@BelLordWilliams

I have to agree here. DADT had the effect of decreasing discrimination in the military - which created the environment that would allow the current military leadership to claim that disposing of DADT (and the associated dismissal of gay troops) would not hurt the fighting capability of the troops.
@MsSphinx91
10 жыл бұрын
I think he meant failure as in it wasn't what he set out to do. It was just a half measure, which probably didn't make him popular with the general public at the time. But yeah, in the long run, it was an important baby step.
@LeeTheBennett
10 жыл бұрын
Except that when you really look at it, DADT didn't really do anything. Sure, gays could serve, but it if it came out that they were gay, either by their own admission or if evidence was found, they would get the boot. That's why it was a failure for the gay rights movement.
@zedek_
10 жыл бұрын
Lee Bennett What you're not taking into account was that "gays could serve" legally... that's a *huge* step, and one that was very much necessary in order to reach the point we are currently at. You're really underestimating the importance of that; especially for the time in which it was passed. That is why it's nothing but a success for the gay rights movement. It doesn't matter if the step that was taken wasn't a huge sweeping one that removed all legal discrimination. A win is a win, no matter how small.

It still amazes me that John has the ability to talk about these political figures without bringing personal politics into it. In the world of Twitter, Facebook, FOX news, and MSNBCs, there isn't anyone who just gives straight facts without putting a personal spin on it. Once again, John manages to do this while at the same time entertains (and is pretty funny too). So I have to commend him and the staff of Crash Course. This truly is an awesome channel.

John, I think you forgot a significant foreign policy achievement of Clinton: helping Israel and Jordan negotiate peace. One could certainly that peace was inevitable given Jordan and Israel's shared interests, but nevertheless, especially regarding Palestine and Syria, Jordan serves as a useful ally.
