I have to say, there is a lot of engineering in that car. Having built a number of electric vehicles in the early 2000s, it's really hard to convert a gas vehicle AND make it look OEM. If they did it for less than $100 million, that is an achievement. Too bad they didn't put it into something more interesting - doing that & focusing on the charging network is basically what made Tesla. Fun fact! Speedometers that only went to 85 were mandatory in the US for a handful of years around 1980, as part of the NHTSA's implementation of the 1979 law that pinned the speed limit on the Interstate to a horrifically glacial 55 mph until the mid-'90s. My very first car was an '84 Oldsmobile Toronado, which still had an 85-mph speedo despite that particular bit of regulation having been abandoned by '82 (I suppose because GM hadn't bothered to redesign the interior yet). That car had the same habit as your Coda, of being so smooth you could end up going much faster than you meant to go. I don't know how _much_ faster, because of the 85-mph speedo, but I will say that at one point, when I noticed I'd inadvertently pegged it and took my foot off the gas, it took... _some time_ for the needle to come off the peg and start going down. :) Also, the box copy for the flashlight makes me nostalgic for the instructions printed on the envelope that the disposable chopsticks provided by my favorite Chinese restaurant used to come in: "Please enjoy your Nice Chinese Food with Chopstick, the traditional and typical of China glonous [sic] history and cultual [sic]."

We owned Coda #87, purchased in December 2012. It was advertised as 125 miles range. We were able to reach 122 for the top range, but over our 40K mile ownership, it delivered 110 miles regularly. The only time it dropped below that was during a rainstorm, with heavy winds and high 39s temperature, with the headlights, defrosters, and heater all running. That put us at 93 miles range, so the EPA 88 mikes range was garbage. It also accelerated easily to 60mph in 8.5 seconds, which is not neck snapping like our Tesla Model 3, but a very nice acceleration capability, helping us to avoid freeway on-ramp drama. As to heating/cooling the passenger and battery compartments, we had a heat pump in the Coda, which neither our 2917 Audi or 2018 Tesla Model 3 came with. Yes, there were software issues which were not addressed, due to Coda’s bankruptcy, but overall, it was a decent EV. Only Teslas and the RAV4-EV had more range (the RAV4-EV only if charged to 100%, which was not recommended). Also, in the 2 months before bankruptcy, a 50kW CCS DC fast charge connection was tested and it actually fit within the confines of the charge port door. It didn’t make it to market before the bankruptcy, unfortunately, but we were able to gain 23-24 mph charging with the level 2, 30amp GE Wattstation EVSE which came with the Coda for free, so recharging to 100% taking 8 hours is 90 minutes longer than it took our Coda to charge from empty.

There was a Coda for sale in Vermont I found with five miles. It never had a battery in it, and still had the plastic covering the seats. I hope it’s in a museum now.

I watch this channel because it features rare obscure cars, and wow you do not disappoint. The Coda logo on its yellow background reminds me a bit of Renault, only they replaced the diamond with a completely nondescript circle. It's like one of those generic non-licensed cars you find used as part of the scenery in video games, made real.

Someone in my neighborhood had one of these. I always thought it was just from a short-lived brand made by a major car company (like Geo). I had also thought it could be an Opel despite the fact that the brand was never sold in the US.

Personally I welcome this look. So many car makers feel the need to make their electric cars to stand out, which just has the effect of making the car look obnoxious... I feel its one of those "they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should" moments.

The little things you do when editing the videos makes them very entertaining, I love to spend time trying to figure out exactly how you spliced clips together. Combined with your writing style, these videos are all awesome. And that car sounds very cool on paper, but ends up like a store brand sorta car. Very bland, but still functional.

I just bought a used 2014 Chevy Spark EV, and I feel like it's all the things the Coda tried to be but with good execution. Good body with DC fast charging, high safety ratings, good fit and finish, "economy" interior, 140 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. That last part is really what made me dish out some extra money for it. It GOES. Well at least compared to my car before it, a 1995 Civic EX (the higher power engine model btw). Not exactly fast compared to fast cars, but balls to the wall for an economy car
