I'll tell stories, idgaf. I hated wittdtjr, I sold just enough of it to not get yelled at and ignored it the rest of the time. I have literally walked people out of the store and told them to go to a mechanic to better spend their money. I'm a terrible bullshit salesman and I had no interest in doing that. I knew far too much for them to realistically complain about me and my bosses liked me because they didn't need to babysit me.

I'd had some of their employees scoping out and geeking out about my 88' Supra when I pulled in and having that kind of interaction is something I always remember. One time I went into the same store for "luxury metallic" Plasti-dip for the Supra plastic grill and asked a quick question about it to the cashier and they said "I don't know, I don't use that crap." They are always kids. The O'Reily's here in town always has old guys who are big into cars though and have been there a while. Auto Zone tends to carry a lot more product than they do though
@lolbuster01

@@rushnerd I probably wouldn't have really geeked out. I prefer weird cars or large displacement American cars. I remember I blew my coworker's mime because I sold a dude an air filter without asking him what car he drove. I was taught to look stuff up in physical catalogs while learning how to use the computer catalog. Oreillys training (at least when I was hired) is way better than autozone. Autozone is so corpo they have a fucking company cheer. You are supposed to do this twice a day at open and close (we never did) and are forced to do it at meetings. Their training as I was leaving autozone was slowly becoming "just sell the customer as much as possible" hoping it will solve their problem. Aftermarket on these newer cars also just isn't as cheap as it used to be. Trying to explain to people that a code scan just tells you what is going wrong not what is broken is almost pointless. The customers are still in some ways stuck in 2005 where there aren't 100 sensors controlling injector pulse width to the nth microsecond. It's all so frustrating because I'll try to do my job properly and explain "no, I don't know if this will fix your issue for sure" only to have people either go to the O'Reilly's down the street (which kinda sucked) and just get told "yeah replace it" or just buy the part and then get upset when nothing changes. My advice, if you don't want to work on cars or can't, do a year or two at O'Reilly's or autozone and then get hired at a dealer of your choice brand. Don't stay in those hell holes as long as I did.

The most annoying part of Autozone (along with most other auto parts stores) is that there will be 3 employees working: 1 is hiding in the back somewhere, 1 is helping a customer look up parts for all of eternity and the other is in the parking lot doing wipers or batteries. Then there's me, holding a can of brake cleaner waiting 20 minutes to be checked out in line behind 2 other people.

@JadenWeeks

one of if not the only good video i ever watched by donut media talked about that, they were talking about how most people upgrade their engine first and then work through drivetrain and then do suspension and wheels, but they (correctly) said instead you should start with tires, and end up at engine. that's oversimplified but basically, wheels/tires & suspension components are the MOST important part about a project car's performance on a track, & that is a truth too few realize.

It'll be better than all the dudes who buy "real" 3 piece wheels off marketplace that have been poorly rebuilt 87 times. The issue isn't the wheel being a "knock off," the problem is it being a cast wheel. There is an old saying. “You are casting a vote to anything you spend money on” I compare auto parts stores to gas station/convenience stores. They operate similar to each other. They both rely on the impulse factor. I like to buy my oils from local fuel and oil supply distribution warehouses. You can often get them in 5 gallon buckets (or even 55 gallon drums), and save money that way. It’s also handy when you have multiple vehicles which take the same oil. They will often have the filters you need, sold by the case at a discount. I have one in my area that has literally everything available in bulk. Fuel additives, chemicals to make your own washer fluid, even antifreeze and brake fluid. The auto parts store is literally the worst place to buy stuff from. Agreed. This business model would not exist if people would just plan and prepare their maintenance ahead of time.

There’s also a lot of parts swappers in the pro and diy scene, so half the time the part you buy, has already been used!

Thing about Autozone is that they were one of the pioneers of bringing readily available car parts to your average consumer. Before hand everything was handled in the OEM shop, or a mechanic and you couldnt just casually go to a retail store to find what u need. And with that early stranglehold on the market will always come some sort of monopolization. They get to charge you 30$ for 15 inch wiper blades because ONCE UPON A TIME you couldnt go to any random store like walmart and get them. And they also stay in buisness without adapting much because the items they sale will never not be relevant (like blockbuster or physical media at gamestop), & they have big box store name value so wealthy people will go yo them thinking they have they best quality. But I heavily encourage people to look elsewhere. If you dont wanna do online shops like rock auto or Ebay motors then your local NAPA/Orilleys will have mostly all the same stuff for a fraction of the price👍🏽

I used to only shop my local auto parts store up until they went out of business in the early 2000's. Right about the same time I started buying from auto zone, I knew they were on starting down the wrong track when standing in line to get a part for my 64 Impala I watched the employee grabbing windsheld wiper refills by the arm fulls and throwing them in a trash can ( I'm hoping just to carry them to the back) only to replace them with wiper blades that had the arms on them because hey, why charge $1 or $2 for refills when we can make you spend $10 for a new wiper blade and arm. (Now they are $20, $30 $40 per side!) After that I adopted the corp. attitude myself and I'm not loyal to any store, I always shop the prices based on quality and find the balance between the too no matter who I'm buying from. Another thing I only just realized a couple months ago, only cause I had not needed to do it for years, was that they stop selling rebuild kits for brake calipers! My dad showed me growing up, how to work on cars and we would just rebuild brake cylinders or calipers for a few bucks. Now they won't sell you the kits but they still make them because they sell rebuilt units all day long! Why sell me a kit for maybe $10 when we can stop carrying them and make you have to spend $100 for a rebuilt one! Or they will sell you an incomplete kit so you have to go out and find an O ring or two to finish it. And we wonder why there's not more of a push back against the anti right to repair problems, its because they make more money not really fighting it and quietly play both sides! Come buy form us so you can work on your car and save money, only we'll slowly take away your choices while they make cars harder to work on yourself. I'm now waiting for them so slowly phase out junkyards, cause you can save some real money getting many used parts that are better quality then you can buy at new car part stores. Simply because they are real oem parts.

I agree with you 100%. Friends don't let friends shop at auto zone. Except on the economy. I think the economy is terrible right now.

I’m usually a stickler with getting the right deal. But I never even considered that I was getting fleeced buying oil at Autozone. Just checked, and yes sir. I probably lost $100 in the last few years buying oil from those effers. Thanks for the catch

As a former Parts Sales Manager for Autozone. The only thing that matters is upselling bulb grease and front facing the isles before leaving. Customer service and car knowledge aren’t in the top 10 of minimum employee skills required for the job. Basically, have a pulse and show up to work are the top 2.

A new mechanic shop in my area started out buying parts from Auto Zone because they were inexpensive and had the best warranties, but they quickly learned that the parts were junk and the lifetime warranties were a lifetime of headaches. They were constantly replacing parts that they had put in on their own dime. The batteries are all made by the same companies, but these companies make different grades depending what the customer wants.

As soon as I heard you say swap the parts into the Autozone box and get full credit back, only makes you look scummy. Just pay for it and be done. Yes it’s more but pay next day shipping or same day shipping on a part it’s equal to rock auto prices lol

It’s true. AutoZone wanted to change twice as much for Valvoline synthetic blend high mileage. Their 1 qt was 9.98$ while Walmart the 5qt was 22$. It’s insane.

Love this talk while you change your oil. Please make another one. Let's talk about junk yard parts and how expensive used parts have gotten.

I refuse to go to Vatozone anymore. I used to use their brakes for the warranty until they conveniently put the wrong vehicle on my receipt. When I went to get my brake pads from them they refused to warranty them because my receipt had the wrong vehicle on it. I had gotten 3 sets and I think they did it on purpose so they wouldn’t have to give me anymore pads. I’ll never set foot in their stores again.

I used to go to AutoZone mainly because the staff were a bunch of old heads that were always super helpful and actually cared about the customer. They're all gone and now the store is filled with these rude brats that sit on their phone and try to sell me the most expensive crap to get me out ASAP. I haven't been back since

I been buying my oil from Walmart for so long. I remember when Super Tech was almost clear and $2.50 a quart.

Glad i stumbled upon this video. I always wondered why I couldn't just go onto their website and see a general price, instead I had to "choose a store" and then see the price, as if the store changes the price depending on where they're located at.

and remember this is ridiculous for small vehicles, imagine the guys with the big v8 engines going to auto zone for an oil change, who have to purchase 7-11 quarts of oil and who have to use full synthetic.. that’s easily around $130 for an oil change, where else where can be half that price. i like autozone for their parts in emergency situations.. so many times they saved me even though i paid more, i was cruising again same day

My 'auto-boned' story: Went in to get a master cylinder for my sisters car at the time, a 1994 Honda civic. Got the part, went back to the car . . . and found out the mounting ears for the cylinder to the booster were 90 degrees off. Completely the wrong part. Had to waste another hour going out to get another part to be able to make sure my sister could go to work the next day because it was Sunday. My sister had a shit job at the time so they probably would have jerked her around over missing work had I not been able to get the car running. Never bought anything from autobone after that if I could help it. And the only tool I've ever bought from them was a couple of their 5-packs of assorted 10mm sockets; the only good idea in tools they ever had.

thank you for the oil plug trick. may i repay you with a trick of my own? buy thin bubble wrap, cut it so it can go under the car and you can use it to slide underneath the car with such ease it’s like you’re sliding on ice. keeps the shirt clean, shoulders and back not cut up and it’s better than a roller in my opinion.

Worked at Oriley for a couple months & oil/coolant/any fluids is where allot of the money is made, and AutoZone/Advance parter with companies with MOBIL1 to screw you over even more. Best value for parts at the parts stores are the other maintenance things like brake pads and such, also anything with a lifetime warranty is gonna be worth it

My local autozone takes about 30 - 60 mins to get out of that store if there’s a small line. That’s how bad they are
