The thing is, people who call for diversity in comics are the same people who won't buy comic featuring a diverse character. Last year DC introduced characters like Silencer and justice league of China which had extremely good story but DC had to cancel them because of low sales . I mean If publishers are giving you an diverse book then why not go and support them.

Batto Otoko Because who cares about diversity! A race or skin color doesn’t make anyone more interesting. If you find diversity as a form of entertainment, that’s pretty messed up. It’s like you’re using other races just for entertainment rather than actual merit. Stop focusing on race and focus on a good story. I don’t want a character that is of a certain race, I want a good character that happens to be of a certain race. Trust me that makes a big difference. I am saying this as a brown man. I’m tired of people identifying me as Latino or a brown man. Why can’t I just be a man or just an American. Instead I’m always called something else. It’s very annoying.

One of the reasons we enjoy art is that we crave novelty: we want to be surprised and meet new people to expand our horizons. Reading works by diverse authors isn't just a meaningless change in the character's skintone, but a unique opportunity to have a fun time in places you know little of and meet people with a surprisingly different view of the world. Diversity has value in itself. If you know nothing about China, watching a sloppy romantic TV-movie made in Hong Kong may be more enjoyable than watching an Oscar-winner film. The adventure into the unknown and the unexpected can sometimes be more important to the espectator than the "objective" value of a work. The quality of a work only becomes important when you are familiar with the subjects of the work. Because when the subjects are shockingly new to you, you become so fascinated by the surprises that you just don't care about comparing it to other works. I'm not saying all comics by, say, black artists, portray a really unique experience; I bet most of them would probably fit your expectations of what a black story is. But I think every reader should be aware of what is unfamiliar and alien to him, so he can then find books about it that offer him that novel cultural experience, just to feel the thrill of discovering and learning.

When those people get what they want an some white male super hero becomes a gay, latina, 16-year-old, trans girl they applaud it. But for s o m e reason they DON'T BUY THE FUCKING COMIC and it ends up getting cancelled. That's why I made a "negative comment" because I've seen this shit before, and how it TYPICALLY ends. If this ends up positive instead of negative and helps small artists writing diverse quality content instead of retconned trash then good for those artists, readers, and the owner of the establishment.

One Shot The point of comics and other forms of entertainment is to make money, not change society in a way it no longer needs. They already treat these people as normal or heck, treat them better than they would others. And most kids don’t care if a hero is the same as them. All they care about is if a hero is awesome or funny or pretty. I’m not black but my favorite superhero as a kid was Static Shock because he was awesome. His cartoon dealt with racial and lgbt issues but it handled them well and didn’t make Static Shock’s life revolve around such issues. You say it’s important for these “diverse” comics to show different people and normalize them but would they like to be represented by terrible characters in terrible storylines? This push for diversity against all logic just hurts these people rather than make anything better for them.

And sure, you may have been different as a kid but so far, every child I took care of in fifteen years never once told me they liked a character because they have the same skin color as them. Jason If you’re talking about Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse then it was a great movie with real diversity. As in, they didn’t feel the need to bash the audience in the head with how great Miles is just because he’s a black Spider-Man. Or Gwen for being Spider-Woman. It didn’t bring attention to it and focused on making good characters. It also didn’t bash on Peter B, a straight white male. Sure he was a moron sometimes but it’s understandable given his backstory. He was also never portrayed as being any less of a hero just because he’s white and straight or had Miles constantly show him up. People loved the movie because it was a great movie and gave Miles a good character arc without preaching the usual SJW garbage.

Rockandstone Because they’re pushing for diversity despite that being exactly why the comic book industry is dying now. They care more about diverse characters than actual good characters with good stories. It’s cool they’re supporting indie comics but they didn’t give much reasons for why people should buy the guy’s comics other than it’s diverse.
@thefrostbee4182

@@MyShiroyuki that does make sense, however, i dont think the point of diversity is just for the fact that its diverse, and ignoring all else. If they did only care about that, and it was bad characters and story, that sucks, but i saw nothing indicating that
@MyShiroyuki
5 жыл бұрын
Rockandstone The vast majority of comics these days DO only care about diversity to the detriment of the story. Sure the indie comics the store supports may not be like that but these days, buyers of comic books see any comic using diversity as a selling point as a telltale sign that it isn’t worth reading or buying. People are also sick of being told to support something just because they’re diverse. Saying this store supports local indie comics and not bringing attention to diversity would have been a much better story that would have been received far better.
@thefrostbee4182

@@MyShiroyuki i hear the argument that alot of people are like this all the time but. ive never seen it myself, and i almost always always see the complete opposite. it feels more like people just make up their minds that all diverse operations or groups are bad, and then come up with ways of how they could be bad, and just go with it as the truth, instead of actually getting numbers on how it works. like the classic ''look at this one dumbass, who also happens to be left, or right, or whatever. that means the rest of em suck too''
@MyShiroyuki
5 жыл бұрын
Rockandstone I don’t like people who don’t look for evidence to support their arguments and just spout things as if they’re fact as well. I talked to people and the majority of them are fed up with this so called diversity. I also looked at the sales numbers of the comics, and other forms of entertainment, that use diversity as a selling point. And they’re doing terribly. The local comic book store where I live is focusing more on selling manga and Japanese merchandise rather than comics and comic merchandise now because that is what sells. I’ve seen more and more evidence that diversity doesn’t sell every day. This store shouldn’t be advertising how diverse they are because nowadays, that’s what most comic book stores are doing and most of them are failing.

I've never really had that feeling where I felt something was amiss because of a lack of characters who I shared similar physical features with. That has no essence to me. Comic book superheroes already portray ridiculous body standards so that already makes it unrelatable in terms of physical features rather than simple skin colour. It's their personalities, character development, and their relationship with one another that really makes me relate. Focus on that and you don't really notice or at least take to heart the difference in our appearance to theirs, since it's rather irrelevant to try to relate to the characters in that regard 😂

They like them for simple reasons like they're strong and beautiful. Anyone can be that, you don't need validation that you can attain the same thing just because a comic book character happens to have the same skin colour as you. Or at least I never saw it that way. Of course there's nothing wrong with extending the level of diversity, but there will always be groups that won't have as much recognition or appearances than others. What about them? I just think it's pointless in the end to focus on those things too much.

Most comic books take place in America where African Americans make up only 14% of the population, so I don’t think it’s “not diverse enough” when there’s only one black character for ever 8 white characters. Also Its technically not really diverse when they make all of the comics book characters the same race...even if that race is black.
