Vibrato is the difference between sounding pro and sounding amateur. It’s a player’s fingerprint. Decades ago someone said to me “never bend a string without vibrato” - best piece of advice ever. Unless you’ve got perfect pitch it’s an absolute must. Come to think of it, even if you’re lucky enough to have perfect pitch always add vibrato when you bend a string.

Now after a 20 year break and picking it back up again, I'm learning technique the proper way this time around. Thank you Sped! Big fist bump from across the pond! Cheers! 🙂

@@SpedSpedding hey Sped, it went pretty well. General vibrato has improved a lot, particularly around tone and control. Still need to do some work around sticking vibrato on a bend. It is better, but needs plenty of practice. Used a couple of obvious Gary Moore tunes to practice it. That Moore fella was a bit handy.

Man this is great video! I was considering doing a little video on my tiny YT channel about vibrato but you have covered all the bases, and with better production than my iPhone 11😊. I have been playing a while, but when I first got really into lead guitar I got really into guys like SRV, Hendrix, and old Clapton, and those guys all have great vibrato. With blues playing there is such a premium on feel and vibrato, it’s something you have to work on. I do often see players on YT who are really great technically but maybe they have erratic vibrato or vibrato that is out of tune. Really takes me out of the song. It’s like hearing someone sing out of key. Long story short, this vid should have 100k views because a lot of players need to be more aware of this, because even if you can play flashy licks, if your vibrato and bends suck, your playing suffers. Cheers 🎸🤘🏼

Thank you for your awesome comment. I am stoked that you found the video so useful and relatable. As you may have heard in the introduction, good vibrato-or at least the concept and fundamental technique-somewhat eluded me in my youth. I too wish I had received more detailed guidance back then. Today, I took one of my students through a vibrato lesson similar to this one earlier today, and the difference by the end was remarkable.

9:37 Ah, the dreaded first string slipping off the fretboard! I hate that -- and I always seems to produce the most non-musical pitches when it happens. That's one of the reasons I dislike narrow fretboards, especially when the first string nut slot is cut too close to the edge. Thanks for another great lesson. Bending with musical vibrato really separates the good players from the great ones. David Gilmour, Brian May, Frank Marino, Pat Travers, Joe Perry, Ty Tabor, Jerry Cantrell, Paul Kossoff and Mark Knopfler are some of the guitarists I feel have amazing bending vibrato.
@SpedSpedding
3 ай бұрын
Yes they do! If you’ve struggled slipping off the fretboard then practicing the directional variations will be huge for you. I only used to move one way when mine was erratic but now I can control it wherever I am on the fretboard.

@@SpedSpedding Yes, something I'll definitely work on. I can bend to pitch fairly well. Sometimes I practice bending up a half-step, let it ring for a second, continue to bend up a whole-step, let it ring, bend up a minor third, let it ring, and if I feel daring, continue to a major third. Then I'll descend the same way after another pick strike. The biggest challenge for me is the popular whole-step bend with vibrato that stays on pitch. Thanks again!

@SpedSpedding
3 ай бұрын
I get that. Sounds like stamina and strength more than anything to me. I would whack a metronome on and play single notes with every finger. Bring in the vibrato to your desired width and wiggle until the notes does naturally. Keep knocking up the metronome in speed and don’t increase until you have the sound you want. 🤝🏻

I’ve seen recently that when one bends up to a pitch, the vibrato should basically involve repeating that bend but not going sharp. I thought that was odd because that’s really the only opportunity to get that sharp and flat vibrato. Anyway, is that a no-no? Maybe it’s the context?
@SpedSpedding
3 ай бұрын
That’s what I encourage in my first exercise, finding the pitch and bending up to it and not over. But as you go wider and faster you may end up “orbiting” the intended pitch in my opinion. From teaching people this technique for the first time, building strength in the fretting hand and understanding the locked off fingers and wrist twist so to speak is essential. Once that clicks it starts to sound musical and you can find your own sound and style with a musical consistency.
