“Dark romance” has become nothing but a way for authors to justify romanticizing abusive relationships

I honestly don't know what dark romance is supposed to be. I think I read a darkish series but honestly the dark part was not the romance. That was very "wholesome". Obviously some of the dialogue was crude because of the circumstances the characters were in but it wasn't abusive at all. The story was f**king dark though. Like really traumatising for both leads, more so for the female protagonist, but never at the hands of the male protagonist.

The reason cute flowery covers with bright colored backgrounds are used on such books is to advertise to those who are not mature enough to understand certain themes such as sexual abuse for example. These young girls will think the story is cutesey just by the cover alone but when they read it, they're already hooked on it just like crack. The brain of a youth(child or teen) and the brain of an adult are TWO VERY different things. Pre-teens and teens do not have the same maturity like an adult does. I'm not a parent but I sure as hell wouldn't want my kiddos reading such books. This is why PARENTS need to be stepping it up

One of my biggest issues with booktok is how it has distorted dark romance. I've been reading dark romance for over 10 years, way before it blew on tiktok, and one of the big things I've noticed is how many authors treat dark romance the same way 50 shades of grey treated BDSM, it's superficial and clear they don't actually know what they are writting about, which bothers me a lot since it gives the readers and good authors a hard time.

On the topic of book consumerism, I really don't understand why people do "book hauls" where they buy like 50 books that they know they're not going to read and then like a month later they're doing massive book unhauls where they get rid of basically every book they bought that month. Like, I get that it's for content but I get annoyed over how wasteful it is. It's gotten to the point where the phrase "buying books and reading books are two different hobbies" makes me a little angry because sure, they can be two different hobbies, but like, if "buying books is your hobby" that doesn't mean that it still isn't unnecessarily wasteful if you're not reading those books. There are some people that don't even donate them, they just let those books sit in their shelves, unread, forever. And I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to have like a "reader aesthetic" or if you like to buy special edition of books or like to make sure that your books have pretty covers, but again, it's just super wasteful if you're only buying books for the "aesthetic" and you don't even bother to read them. Reading is a hobby, and I think that you should have fun with it and enjoy it, but let's maybe cut down on the hyper-consumerism

I read books that are out of my (former) comfort zone now and i discovered so many gems! Books that force me to see things from a different perspective. Books that make me question myself and make me reflect on my own behavior. Alternative views on the world, etc. I focus more on how authors use language and stylistic devices to tell their story, i love complex characters. I still read fluffy romance books, romantasy, and so on in between, kind of like a palate cleanser. I really just wish we could come to the internet, see something really fucked up being romanticized and then talk about why its even the way it is. People have become to comfortable with these weird books that they either go with the "Its just misogyny" defense or "Its a reflection of reality" defense, and to be honest both arguments have lost its value The misogyny argument when it comes to the larger picture doesn't really work, mainly because these books are written by women and critisized by women. That goes into the "pick-me" argument which is basically the same thing as the misogyny argument but slapped onto women. It just entirely invalidates the idea that you can have a genuine issue with a piece of media solely because its written by a woman, and that alone should stir up the discussion as to why people always say this Then there's the "reflection" argument. It once again deflects from the argument in favor of assuming the author is writing it to cope with their trauma, but no one seems to mention that people are sexualizing and fetishizing said trauma even if it makes everyone else uncomfortable. Not only that, but there is a book called "The pawn and the puppet", if this was released maybe 6 months ago then I feel like people will excuse the platant transphobia, sexism, and the nonsensical and inaccurate representation of mental illness. I say this because H. D. Carlton effectively started her career on this type of thing, and people still have an issue with critiquing it. I've been in a couple arguments with these people, and no one seems to want to defend the reasons why they like the book, but it seems like they take it as a personal attack. It's so odd to me that there are people like this in the world who will gladly switch up when one of their favorite authors get exposed for bigotry. There's so much hypocrisy flowing in this community that its unbearable

My biggest problems with booktok are definitely the consumerist and capitalism aspects of it, specifically tropeification of everything. Everyone uses it to market when it is supposed to be language for fans to use to be like this is right up the alley of a potential audience. I'm glad reading is cool again, and it's really motivating to get back into it, but I think publishing houses are almost too literate and predatory in the marketing language of booktok. It feels invasive.

i don't have a problem with people reading and enjoying books with dark/taboo subjects, but sometimes they kinda pretend like they aren't incredibly toxic and abusive and that's not good.

I love me some classics and complex books around topics like science snd philosophy but it’s nice to have some chill books that are easy read fictions…my issues with booktok is most of them are all insane off the rails stories that make no sense and the writing is absolute garbage. Like yessh it makes Nora Robert’s old school smutty books look like masterpieces and yes they are even written better than this new garbage.

Oh heavens, Fourth Wing... *Obviously* no hate for people who liked it, I really wanted to be one of those people, but uh... I think I'll stick with Wheel of Time and other strictly high fantasy stories that read like high fantasy. Worldbuilding taking a backseat to romance really isn't my thing, I guess.😅 That's part of the reason I avoid booktok. I just don't have the same tastes, so it ends up being a checklist of books I probably won't like.

It has so many more issues than the world building being shallow tbh. Like people have been *sooooo* soft on this book its crazy. This book might make me not want to read ever again if it was my first book, like Violet as a character is genuinely the worst I've seen between books, movies, tv, anime *and* manga combined.

@lukekono sorry, I actually agree with you that all books are valuable and serve a purpose. Just because something is easy and doesn't require much thought doesn't mean it lacks value as entertainment. Art in a museum challenges our perspectives of reality- but sometimes I just want to scroll through cute drawings on Instagram. Both have their own value and importance. But the act of reading doesn't improve one's ability to analyze and form opinions on texts then support those opinions using g factual details. Also, I'm all for self publishing and I don't think mistakes invalidate a text either as something worthwhile. I grew up on fan fiction afterall

I read the article you referenced about e-readers v paper books. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I am an e-reader and library person, for the most part. It was interesting to discover the advantages and drawbacks of the different media. I do keep my e-reader until it dies, which is fortunately several years, so I end up on top of the environmental game with it. Nevertheless, it was surprising to discover how close the environmental impact of each really is.

Books are important that way because they can change your mindset + your life!

Hmm i always thought about it in a bit different way as a fantasy reader - I want to read every detail of world created no matter if it's murder, war, rape or s*x scene how long it happens in a book to character I want to read it without author censoring it. Because as mostly epic fantasy reader if author censor s*x scene but its okay to describe in detail massacre it just a double standard to me. But i understand your point, in fantasy genre 20 years ago there was a big line between fantasy and fantasy romance but today they act like - ITS FANTASY so i often end up with girl boss spicy romance that f*c fae when i signed only for epic adventure....

Genuinely, these people just need to read fanfics. There are fanfics with the same content, difference is, they're tagged properly and at least on AO3 the author is well aware that the thing they're writing about it wrong and not meant to be justified. But yeah, the amount of YA books that have immensely triggering content (like self harm, suicidal thoughts, s*xual assault) do not have warnings.

I have gotten three books from Book Tock Madeline Miller's Song of Achilles and Circe as well as A Good Girls Guide to Murder Song of Achilles: Haven't read it in a while but from what I remember nice LGBTQ+ Romance. It basically goes through the life and death of Greek Warrior Patroclus( Achilles bf from the Iliad) and his romance with War Hero Achilles. However I will warn you there is a smut scene and later on an S/A scene, also a lot of muder. Circe: Daughter of Helios and from the Odyssey ( turned Oddyseus's men into pigs). It goes through the life of the Goddess. Great story with interesting characters. A little warning there is child abuse and S/A as well as violence. A Good Girls Guide to Murder: About a girl who tries to Solve the mystery of a girl's death. The girl was the girlfriend of her friend who died after he was accused of killing her. Interesting read though I haven't gotten into the second book as much as I did with the first. TW. Murder, dead animal etc.

I'm 7 minutes and I'm going to say this my irritation with book talk is not that it's pretentious and that everyone is reading now because in my normal day-to-day life most people don't read books. That's just the culture I live in. My problem with book talk is the fact that I can't find anything that isn't romance and I'm asexual I enjoy people doing book reviews I don't enjoy book talk because it's all spicy an in negative ways sometimes.

A lot of books on TikTok are just irritating smtty romance books that fet triggering and inappropriate things like SA, inc-st, mental illnesses, mafia, crime, etc. i read a lot, both webnovels and books, and i have read many good stories, by both men and women, romance and horror, both classic and modern(Omniscient Readers Viewpoint, Lord Of The Mysteries, Tiny Nightmares, the Song of Achilles, Hunger Games, Girl In Pieces, Happy Place, My Feelings Can Wait, No Longer Human, Heaven Official’s Blessing, Dracula, The Scum Villian’s Self-Saving System, My Vampire System, Sleeping Princess, etc), and many are nice, even if some of them are very cliche stories, they’re interesting reads i like, even some of them are modern ones directed to het women(im a bisexual man). TikTok is a place with all prefer smtty books, especially ones which fet things triggering for me and others. So, personally, I like searching online in other places like Tumblr, Reddit, or just going to the nearby bookstore to see what is available.
