I grew up in ND, which until quite recently had almost zero Mormons...so I didn't have any bad experiences to go with the stories and jokes I'd hear on TV. I was 19 and living in Minneapolis and barely getting by even though I was working 3 jobs when I met Mormon missionaries for the 1st time when I was working at a gas station. They were nice and asked me how I was, we made small talk and I was talking about how things were rough and I hadn't been able to afford a decent meal in a while..I was skipping eating protein because meat was expensive, etc. They finished up getting their snacks and wished me well and left.. about 20 minutes later they came back in with a grocery back they gave me. They said they hoped I would enjoy their "little gift", that they hoped things would get easier for me and that they'd be praying for me and to remember God's taking care of me, then left. It was the only time they even mentioned God. I opened the bag and started crying because there was enough NY Strip steak, fresh green beans and baking potatoes for 2 people to eat 2 meals. It was easily $75 worth of food. I couldn't believe they didn't even make it about religion or anything pushy like I'd heard. I guess I got 2 honestly nice guys because I literally never saw them again, they gained nothing, it was actually selfless. And it honestly helped me mentally so much.

That’s what makes it so hard. The people can be so kind and loving and genuinely the best people, the church is taking advantage of them and keeping them relatively suppressed. I think that Mormon missionaries should be given kindness and gentle rejection just as you would for any other human who hasn’t been rude to you. Glad you shared because many forget that the general congregation just don’t understand how they are being controlled and used. ❤

The church has this aspect of “take care of our fellow neighbors”, they have food donations that usually go to their own parishioners in need first (which some shady a-holes take total advantage of). But they also reach out to others in need also. At surface level, the teens and young adults do acts like they did because they see it as being neighborly and kind. Its the church that weaponizes that kind gesture to pull new people into the fold.

This happens where I live too, as I live in a college town. Usually Christians of some sort but I don’t listen to them long enough to know lol😭 They all promote Bible study at a local state school and seem well above college-age (doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not students but still). I’ve always found it odd

Hearing about the food storage thing reminds me of a joke my family used to have which is that my mom would always accidentally buy things in bulk because she was raised mormon and now I get why. Seriously like 10-12 years ago she bought a 12 pack of 1 liter hairspray cans and we've NOW just finished them. Eternally grateful she never figured out about costco until after moving into an apartment with limited space because it really exacerbates the buying in bulk

When I moved to Germany it was a pretty jarring experience for me and I messaged in the local expat group and I had a girl around my age respond offering to help me get settled. I had no friends, I hadn't met anyone in my grad program yet, I was super alone. She offered to help me move in, to take me out to her favorite dinner spots, introduce me to her friends. I thought it was so cool I had met someone so kind so fast. We started talking and I asked her what she was going in the area and she said she was here for another 6 months on her mission...I said "mission...?" I didn't associate Germany with mission trips. She then told me she was Mormon and I...stopped messaging her. I am Jewish. I am very happy to *be* Jewish. I know the whole being super nice thing is a literal trap. A few of my friends from back home and I had good laugh about it later but I was a little sad to not get that person who was so eager to help me with the transition. It was a trap though. She for sure was trying to convert me. I would have been a major score. A queer, non-binary, Jewish person

I served a mission many years ago (left the church 5 years ago). We did a lot of service stuff on my mission, we would bring up the gospel while doing service to see if people were interested. However, if they weren't I would still serve them, as most of the missionaries I worked with would to. I've heard of stories though that if they aren't interested then they stop serving and won't talk to you anymore (that's rare though.) Some of the best people I know are Mormons but it's sad to see them get so swept in all of it and take everything the leaders say without questioning any of it.

In1980 my ex kept getting involved in MLMs and I refused. When I came home and he had used our 2 year old holding a diamond to be in a MLM I freaked and finally divorced him as he would not provide for us and he said if I did not go back to work when my adopted child was 19 days old he would not sign the papers for us to be legally his parents!!!! I hated him for taking motherhood away from me.

Before my dad went back to the Catholic Church, he loooved scaring off the Mormon missionaries that went door to door in the college town he lived in. I also loved hearing about it. Now my mom was much more diplomatic, but when my sisters best friend asked her to come over when she invited the missionaries in, she went completely ready. Her deeply Catholic self had one in tears with every counter to their religious doctrine. I wish I could have seen it.

This was really interesting. I have heard you guys mention a little bit about the mormon gloss, and maybe a small mention about the prepping for the apocalypse, but I never realized how seriously it was taken, and it never connected to me that this might make it easier for mormon people to be ok with front loading inventory. It was really ingesting to hear your take on this type of subject, and speaking as a viewer, I would be interested in more edited videos like this.

I had zero interest in Mormonism, but, back in the 80s, I lived in an area that got hit by “Missionaries” quite a bit. I felt so bad for those poor kids, with their little white shirts and their little skinny black ties. If I had time, I usually invited them in and gave them lemonade and cookies. I also told them I could care less about their faith-I just cared about them. They found this alarming at first. Poor kids. Eventually I could get them to stop talking about religion and relax for a little bit. I feel like I was a sanctuary for them. I hope all those boys are okay.

what a great video, y'all!! mckay, you did a great job with reading the script - it didn't feel unnatural or stilted at all (jordan did great too, but since she wrote it that's slightly less noteworthy, and i know mckay was a little wary of the episode being scripted). jordan, i had never put together the tithing = benefitting from pyramid schemery before! what a brain blast! i had known that creativity was valued for mormon women, thus the huge mass of mormon women who blog/make content (and i guess, also, mlms like stampin' up), but i hadn't realized the importance of wellness/prepper culture in the mormon to mlm pipeline. this was a really interesting and informative deep dive, and i'm so glad you finally made it!

i always think its interesting when you talk about MLMs from a Mormon lens bc i almost fell for Cutco and Scentsy in college as a struggling student- and of course we all know some military wife who gets into MLMs lol. However, I havent seen many men participate in MLMs so its also a good point that their missionary work would translate well to being a salesperson in an MLM.

It makes sense college students would be another targeted population. Both my (male) friend and I each spent a summer in college selling Cutco--an independent decision of each other--and then compared experiences when we returned to school and were sharing an apartment. Fortunately neither of us got sucked in very far.

My parents are converts (mid 70s), so I grew up in a Mormon household, but on the East Coast. My parents were very religious, and fairly strict, but they were still grounded and level headed. Then they moved out to Utah (Utah County), and my mom got sucked into all this nonsense. She now believes in reiki, essential oils, and Lord knows what else. I guess if you believe in one absurd thing, it's easier to believe in all the other nonsense. I had major surgery on my chest, and she gave me (doTERRA) frankincense to rub on the wound, to prevent scarring. I took one whiff of that crap, and laughed. No way in hell I was putting that anywhere near me. My mom couldn't wrap her head around me being atheist. "Aren't you scared that there's no afterlife?" she asked me. I asked, why would I want to go on living forever? Do you know how boring that would be after a few hundred/thousand years? There's only so much you can do. The idea of eternity is more terrifying than an absolute end of existence.
@JordanandMcKay

I remember in the infancy of our departure from the church my parents asked me what I thought of any sort of afterlife and they couldn’t wrap their minds around the fact that I didn’t think that anything happened. Like it wasn’t possible that I could just be okay with that.
