I think their lives were tragic but so was his. He was living in a tough time too. I actually felt bad for all of them as all of them were forced into marriages that none of them were willing. Yes basically, she got some she lost some. Like you said, when she lived a rich life, she felt empty inside. When she lived a poor life, she felt emotionally happy and had love along with freedom. This reminds me of animals in zoos. They are held in captivity but are taken care of and well fed, however, they have no freedom. When living in the wild, they have to fend for themselves but are happy and free to roam everywhere. Sadly she could not have both.

A cage made of gold is still a cage. I bet she was happier poor but at least loved and free. Though it is sad she died quite young. I hope she found peace, love, happiness and a true partner in her 2nd husband. It is so brave of her to file for divorce from the emperor! That was truly not done at the time. It seems she decided that she wanted to live, truly live and that gave her the courage to continue her plan. By making her a «spare» and completely ignored wife, the emperor basically took away her chances on love, partnership and motherhood. Unfortunately royal women were not allowed a 2nd husband or lover themselves 😏 She was right to leave.
