I learned it about 30 years ago when I bought Clifford Ashley's book. I use it occasionally. It's a great knot if you're not worried about having to untie it.

I would imagine if a random person that you grabbed off the street tied this knot around something they would be unable to untie it because this would take a lot of patience to not just grab a knife and cut

With a marlin spike, some dedication and a tremendous amount of swearing you can undo any knot, but saying it's impossible to untie (whilst not strictly true) isn't far from the truth once it's tight and gets people thinking twice about using for things they want untied or, god forbid, putting it around a limb

My personal favorite knot is the magician's knot, where if you pull both ends it unties itself. Its really handy for bags of stuff in the freezer, no fiddling with a frozen knot, just pull both ends, take some slices of bread from the bag and tie it back up.

Fun fact, this was originally a taught knot in the Boy Scouts, but was deemed too dangerous, and was removed from publications in the mid-90s. I remember at scout camp, borrowing the old scout leader's unabridged knot-tying book to see any mention of it. 😂

I like to practice Clove Hitch, then Ground-Line Hitch, then Constrictor Knot, because they're all basically just tucking the working end under a different bit, so you can teach it as a natural progression that way. But if you're teaching it, always always always warn how tight the constrictor can get and never to put it around a part of your anatomy or any object that can be damaged.

There's a double constrictor knot too. I learned this in Knots, a fantastic and handy phone app. I used this knot to hang DIY chandeliers made from ice storm downed branches wrapped with fairy lights from a pergola. They have never budged even in heavy sustained winds.

The clove hitch is great when you want ease of untying. The constrictor knot is designed to hold more friction under the crossing so it can be cinched down and "locked" in place by some elastic tension in the cord or compression of the hitched object, as well as be more secure against accidentally coming loose. It's best used for things that you won't need to untie, or when you need the security and don't mind needing to cut it out if necessary.

love that he showed it around a tree but then didn’t show that breaking like everything else, pretty easy to split a pumpkin, not so easy to split a tree in half with a rope.
