Entering Colorado 1.5 weeks earlier than typical, I found myself surrounded by conflicting reports of the trail conditions ahead. Nobody seemed to have a reliable source of information. Hikers discussed various plans of bringing microspikes, an ice axe, and/or even snowshoes. Online predictions stating the trail was clear of snow were already inaccurate, proven wrong by the time I spent postholing on "snowfree" trail. Preparing for difficult 15 mile days, I bought eight days worth of food, which weighed heavily in my pack. Surprisingly, the snow wasn't bad in the San Juan mountains. Many days were spent battling the wind on 13,000ft ridges in a cold seclusion. I looked forward to seeing friends and family further into Colorado. Even a care package from friends in Alaska strengthened my motivation to continue on. As I acclimated to the higher altitude, days became easier. Having lived in Colorado in the past, I’ve explored the area somewhat extensively; yet, while cresting over Lake Ann Pass, I was struck by a rare and pure moment of awe. Immense pyramids of rock towered over a snowy and icy alpine lake that thawed revealing the cold, turquoise water beneath and, spanning into the distance, a mix of pine trees and aspens blanketing the valley below. Reaching Steamboat Springs in northern Colorado, I decided to take a two week break from the trail. The first week of my break in Virginia was great. I was able to rest, visit with family, and eat a lot of food. The second week of my break was less fun due to being sick with COVID. After quarantining and feeling better, I stepped back onto the CDT at Muddy Pass with only about 63 miles left of Colorado. In the following two days, I discovered recovering from COVID and hiking 20-25 miles is not a good mix. A headache and lethargy returned making each mile a struggle. My morale was low. I questioned why I was pushing on. I tried to shift my mindset. I focused on reaching the border of Colorado and Wyoming. One day at a time. One step at a time.
