I am not a drummer and know next to nothing about drumming, but man, this was a riveting watch! I have been following and enjoying The Contrarians for a few years now, and always look forward to listening to Peter. His contributions are well thought out, well prepared, very detailed and always with a very mature perspective. No moments of immature outbursts, just humble and wise in his own way of commenting and style of analysis. Also a great thank you to Martin for letting Peter get on with things. What a great episode!

Very fascinating and enlightening. Makes me think about Cozy Powell and how he became a sacred cow in the ranks of fans. The tree trunks comment is interesting too. What can we say about Vinnie Paul who played with sticks in reverse hitting the handle rather than the tip?

Vinny Appice plays with the butt ends. Neil Peart did until his "reinvention" with Freddie Gruber. Mike Portnoy had done it, at least with his left hand. So a very common thing. Thank you for your great thoughts and for watching the show.

So agree with Martin about Nicko and personality. My favorite example is the chorus in SSoaSS. The vast majority of metal drummers would go more Cozy in such a powerful chorus but what does Nicko do? Just awesome!

A correction. "Heaven in Black" is from TYR not Headless Cross. One of many more "Senior" moments I seem to have these days!!! I will correct others as I hear them. Also, while I may have listed some negatives, Cozy Powell is still one of my all-time favorite drummers. Especially live.

@@pjones8404I particularly agree with you on the Peter Criss/Eric Carr bit too. I see so many people online who slag Peter Criss because he wasn’t a “technical” Metal powerhouse like Eric Carr. However, KISS’s music at the time Peter was in the band was very “rock n’ roll”…with the emphasis on “roll”. His drumming was sort of rooted in that NYC R&B sound that bands like The Young Rascals had. I think another old school NYC drummer who had a similar swing/swagger was Peter’s friend Jerry Nolan of the NY Dolls. Perhaps by the turn of the 80’s, KISS were looking for a heavier drummer with more metal drumming chops. That sound may have been perfect for the 80’s KISS but it doesn’t necessarily mean it was better overall in the scope of things. I’m glad you made your points on this channel.
