๐The Conversion of Apostle Paul๐
A Pharisee who was an ardent believer in Judaism and a staunch believer in the law. Saul supported the execution of Stephen, the first martyr, and imprisoned many Christians.
Saul received orders from the high priests and elders of Jerusalem to arrest the hiding Christians and set out for Damascus, the capital of Syria.
When Saul had almost reached Damascus, a great light flashed from the sky and a sound was heard.
โSaul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?โ (Acts 9,4)
Saul asked, surprised.
โWho are you, sir?โ (Acts 9,5)
He answered.
โI am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.โ (Acts 9,5)
He was the resurrected Jesus.
In fact, Saul never saw Jesus, so he never persecuted Jesus.
He simply persecuted Christian believers whom he thought had false beliefs, but he realized that Jesus considered himself one with Christian believers through the words.
In other words, He realized that persecuting Christian believers is persecuting Jesus Christ, and that the way to love Jesus Christ is to love the church, the community of Christian believers.
โLove for the churchโ is the core of what made Saul, a man of Judaism, reborn as Paul, a man of God.
Paul's conversion is not a personal transition, but a transition to a life of loving Jesus Christ within the church community.
After meeting the resurrected Jesus, Paul always sought to unite with the church community. He never put himself first and always thought of the church first.
When Paul, the โApostle to the Gentilesโ, traveled to various regions and did missionary work, he made it clear that he was a person sent by the Jerusalem church.
He emphasized helping the persecuted Jerusalem Church and called for unity between the local church and the Jerusalem Church.
When there was a conflict between church members, he did not judge arbitrarily, but thought together within the church community and thoroughly followed the church's decisions.
Paul's knowledge and ability were so outstanding that he was a disciple of Gamaliel, the greatest Jewish rabbi at the time.
However, Paul humbled himself thoroughly and thought of the church community first.
This is because he knew that no matter how great his abilities were, if he did not unite with the church through love, it would be of no use.
โIf I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.โ (1 Corinthians 13,2)
โPaulโs conversionโ played a decisive role in the growth of Christianity, which was a national and regional religion, into a universal religion for all mankind.
The Church celebrates January 25th every year as the โFeast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostleโ, and declares January 18th to 25th as the โWeek of Prayer for Christian Unityโ, praying for the divided Christianity to become one.
โPray that unity will overcome conflict.โ (Pope Francis)
