The Coal Mines, Saltwater River, Tasmania
Coal was discovered near Saltwater River, Tasmania, in 1833 at what was to be known as "The Coal Mines". A small party of convicts were sent from the Port Arthur convict settlement to commence mining in the same year. Originally the convicts were either convicts with previous mining experience or convicts who committed breaches of regulations at the convict prison Port Arthur. Convict mining continued at The Coal Mines until 1848 whereupon the convicts were transferred to other convict stations. The Coal Mines was then leased to private ownership and coal mining continued until 1877.
These videos are my own interpretation of what remains of the convict and civilian built structures using the previous research of others combined with what I see on the day. I have no archaeological or coal mining experience, though I am lucky enough to own a very smart coal coloured dog.
The Coal Mines Historic Site is a 30 minute drive from the Port Arthur Historic Site, be advised though it does not have the facilities found at Port Arthur. For the best experience see the official Coal Mines Historic Site website prior to visiting:
