The Cook in Trouble (French: Sorcellerie culinaire ) is a 1904 film by • Georges Méliès , it is number 585-588 in the Star Film catalog . The Cook in Trouble can be considered a chase-and-escape film, but with the peculiarity that here everything is resolved in a single scene as was the case in trapdoor chase (a type of spectacular chase sequence particularly associated with the Lupino family of performers).
Synopsis . (00:08) In a large kitchen, a cook (Georges Méliès) and his helpers are intent on preparing dinner; a beggar comes over (00:59) begging for alms, and the chef shoos him away in a bad way. (01:20) The beggar, however, turns out to be a magician and casts a spell against the chef and his kitchen. (01:47) A little devil appears and begins to spite. (02:21) More spirits jump out of the dishes and haunt the room, (02:51) the wizard also returns to haunt the cook and his helpers. (03:52) The cook tries to save himself by fleeing hither and thither, but is finally nabbed by his pursuers and thrown into the boiling pot (04:31).
As in other Méliès films, the narrative plot here is rather incosistent; it disappears under the relentless pace of the images and expertly choreographed stunts. It is precisely this aspect that will make the film highly appreciated among avant-garde filmmakers and influenced many authors of comic cinema including Mack Sennett , but especially Buster Keaton : think of the traps and pitfalls with which Keaton fills the scenes in The Electric House or The Haunted House , or the scenes in which he escapes through a ladder...
