I always thought it was super interesting that if I held my ring finger out and prevented it from curling, it was impossible for my to curl my pinky finger. I could curl and fold it with my hand but as soon as I let go, my pinky finger would shoot out like a spring. I figured it was due to how the tendons work but it's cool to actually see them like this.

If you do fine motor skills like playing an instrument you can actually do that since the fingers are trained to move independently

I'm curious if these sorts of "mechanical interlocks" in our hands provide any evolutionary benefit, ie does it improve grip strength or stability vs if each finger could take any position regardless of the positions of the rest of your fingers?

But why is the ring finger so much harder to make lone upright than the middle finger?

Because we're not using that finger to flip people off. So the ring finger is more stiff.

I was just thinking about this! I thought it was you don't move those fingers separately enough so your brain doesn't have a pathway telling you to raise just one of those fingers. Glad to find the real reason.

Don't worry what your doing isn't the middle finger, it's the sign language for cactus. It's only when the thumb is up with it that it becomes the finger. The origin of the meaning is that archers has their finger and thumb cut off when an enemy kingdom captured them so they couldn't be used against them. So when an archer would taunt an enemy they would raise the middle finger and thumb in rebellion against the enemy leaders.
