My mother's always loved nature and conservation and for her 16th birthday she asked my grandparents for a Purple Martin house which, despite their qualms for their 'manicured' yard, they got her. She kept it up for years, even went back to their house to clean it and put it up during nesting times year after year. When I saw this video, I immediately thought of her and paused so we could both watch it together. We've decided it's about time we put a house up at this residence too. Thank you for the wonderful videos you and your team put out every week. Maya Has Fun For Once has been a definite plus to my weekend routines, as they'll be for my mom now too- something she's also decided. ☺

Im not sure why this made me tear up, but this was incredible. Its equivalent to watching the northern lights. Feels like a natural phenomenon that usually dies out due to human activity, but the fact that people have made an effort to save this population is so heartwarming. You are an incredible person to try and save animals from the devestation of humans, and its a great cause, im so happy to see everything you accomplish and glad you share things like this with people who arent able to witness it themselves. Hey just to let you know, they rope the tree limbs, so they do not get broken by the weight of the birds. I have friend in Tennessee that are do this to their trees next because they head through that area. They spray the smaller trees that are not old enough with peppermint spray to keep the birds from sitting on those.

I live right next to a forest that's a gathering place for Crows when they do their partial migration (as I understand, Crows don't do the thousands of miles trek to the Amazon or Africa, they do more of a few 100 miles trek south to breed and then come back). When they leave, it blackens the sky and the noise is haunting.

Purple Martin Party! I love those little guys. My parents lived on Lake Murray, S.C. which is the largest roosting site for Purple Martins in North America. On summer nights we would get in dad's boat and head out to Bomb Island, where the main nesting site is. As we headed to the island, other lakeside inhabitants would join us on the nightly journey, creating a small flotilla of Purple Martin enthusiasts. The birds would swoop low along the water, flying all around us. The racket they made was crazy loud...LOL A treasured memory, for sure! As an added bonus, there are no mosquitos near the lake. The Purple Martins eat them all. So even in the heart of hot and humid, mosquito infested summer, I never got a single mosquito bite! Thank you, Purple Martins! I'm so glad you got to experience this, Maya!

Neat seeing a video about purple martins! They are a yearly attraction at a lake near where I grew up in the south, and there are boat tours that take people around the islands where they roost. Can confirm it is mesmerizing to see thousands upon thousands of birds moving in sync, and also to see trees almost change color entirely due to the amount of birds in them.
