There is a way money makes you conscious of the people you hang around, you will most likely find yourself hanging out with people in the same status. Someone said money determines where you live, where you go and what you do and that's where your friends are also

My bestie and I come from very different financial backgrounds.We met in Campus. I got sponsored to a private university and I met her there. Fast forward to working life she works in international org . Makes good money. I am not doing so badly off but our finances are at very different places. While she owns apartment block , am saving to buy one apartment. We talk often sometimes almost daily. We go out when she is around. She works in a different country in Africa. Like Jay and Dushy said , it's about being conscious of each others financial wellbeing. Even when she makes plans,she makes sure it a place I can afford or she picks the bill.

Petition for a part 2, please. Bring them back. This is a very much needed conversation. People tend to overlook this because let's face it, we are in a society where most people want to be the first one to show off whatever it is. A challenge comes out, everyone wants to partake, new shoes, new Iphone, new restaurant, new fashion etc. That's why I admire people who can truly not be fazed on what's the buzz & stay true to themselves and what they like rather than what everyone likes. It's difficult to stay authentic in a society that is constantly reminding us we need this & that to keep the friends close, to get that promotion, etc. Please bring make a part 2 & longer. Oh @Jules, still waiting on feedback about Fingo app in the diaspora market.

During covid, I was making good money, and I was saving so much. I was in a trio friendship group😮. Those babes liked spending, and I had a certain goal I was saving for..imagine these babes would get so angry at me because I don't want to go out every day. It ended badly, you guys. So yes, money can change your friendship.
@ANM657

OMG I have tried having this conversation with a couple of people and they either dismissed it or didn't get it. You actually know who your friends are when you are going through a financial dip, because let's face it: you can no longer hang out with them, therefore miss out out on many conversations and end up feeling left out, you struggle to keep up with the strained conversations of probably topics you cannot contribute towards etc in short not having money will make your friends fizzle out, and depending on the duration, eventually they diminish. The society we live in is based on flexing that's why the first question people ask is what do you do? Where do you live? Etc ... Imagine being surrounded with these constantly in social gatherings. Solid friends are few and rare, my experience. Very few will put themselves in your shoes or be considerate when making plans etc so you slowly read the room and wait for nature to take it's course.

I like the title and the conversation. Truth be told, if one gets broke, there are limitations to where one can socialize compared to their rich friends. Also, the many events such as birthdays, weddings, ruracio, among others, that one has to give to. That's why I have different kinds of friends: some from church, who are mixed, and then some that I met at work, uni and post-uni, who we are at a similar place careerwise and financially. The idea of 'loud budgeting' sounds great!

It affects love too, i dated this guy he grew up in a rich household but mimi with a struggling single mum. The way we spent money was so different he was a spendthrift and we never understood each other. Some times he would make innocent comments when he visits my place and i just stare at the guy speechless. One time he was like how do families stay in one or two bedrooms with kids, i was like if this guy knew how i grew up. I just felt we will never get each other and he will never understand why some stuff scare me.

Money definitely affects friendships. If you find yourself unable to show up to three consecutive birthdays or hangouts with your friends, that alone is the beginning of outgrowing one another. However there are those core friends where it’s strictly doing life together regardless of the different financial seasons of life.

@@greatness23FL yeahhh. I hear you. I'm very much like that as well. Tough times and good times solo. But I really don't think I can just have "good time" friends and when things are thick they are nowhere to be found. I've seen it with so many relatives and I hate it! I'm abroad where social interaction is in the deepest gutter. So I met this Kenyan guy at an event and he was asking to be friends. Next thing, I got Covid! He didn't even call or send direct messages. All I got is basically a "Sorry" on Whatsapp. Then the next time I've heard from him is yesterday, after 3 weeks! He wants to catch up. I'm like!!!! Kwani how are people doing friendships?! You didn't care if I was gone, alive, stuck in hospital etc etc, but you still want to "catch up????" Things like that really trigger me and I'd rather just keep off. But then I have moments where I'm like, lemme just go for one meetup, just share stories as Kenyans, just have one nice chill meal. But aiiiiii. I'm too sensitive! For me any new friend! I would have still put EFFORT to make sure they're okay. Ah, I'm thinking and thinking... but I might just go with my instincts and avoid it altogether. That's a poor way to start anything.

This episode speaks to me because I've found myself in situations where I lost my friendships due to financial struggles. Yet for me it wasn't the hanging out bit that caused breakups but the inability to tap into the friendships whenever I needed help. So when Julez says authentic friendships which she can count on in sickness or life mashups, I get it. Because most people lack the capacity to empathize with others which in turn affects the quality of modern day friendships. But does it mean there should be a cost? I don't think so. There's a lot to gain from friendships other than hangouts and money.
