A recent trip to the historical mining town of Cracow. We had planned to explore the long lost workings of the Golden Plateau Gold Mine, but quickly realised that the working are indeed gone forever, due to some large scale open cast mining operations somewhere around the years 2004- 2009. The Golden Plateau Gold Mine was in operation from 1932 and abandoned in the mid 1970's. Due to the large break between old mining operations and more modern mining leases taking place, some parts of Cracow have become reminiscent of a Ghost Town. Please note though, all portions of this old "Main Street" of Cracow are still privately owned and accessing these old buildings is not permitted without the owners permission.
Not able to visit the old Gold Mines, we instead spent a night at QLD's famous Cracow Hotel and embarked on a blisteringly hot climbing expedition to a location known as Bucca Gorge. The staff, food and atmosphere at the Cracow Hotel made the 8 hour round trip well worthwhile.
