Hey champ, I am a very unorthodox fighter, I often fight power hand forward and im left handed which I think Pereira likely does this too and your videos on him have helped me, like how Alex rolls, I get hit way too much and I feel like without a solid gaurd I cant do anything but be very aggressive. Now I see its because i cant do that. Thanks man.

His “wrongness “ in guard is what makes his offensive mechanics effortless. Having your opposite hand up is safer but impedes full contra lateral rotation /transient hyper-rigidity across both shoulders which must stiffen simultaneously for max power , having you opposite arm down provides a counterbalance for your punching hand which signals to your nervous system that you can put more energy into that muscle contraction safely. A dangerous gamble but he’s both masterful and beastly so… don’t try this at home kids. @gabrielvargaofficial eh?

One more thing Gabriel, his comeback ability is crazy, he's literally Michael Myers of mma, A prime example of this was during his kickboxing days when Israel Adesanya had him in a tough spot, yet Pereira managed to recover and eventually knocked Adesanya out cold. This resilience is not just limited to kickboxing, in MMA, he displayed similar fortitude. Even after being rocked by Jiri Prochazka, Pereira demonstrated his exceptional comeback ability by securing a knockout victory

His decline like Roy Jones will be precipitous. When you rely on quickness and neglect proper form, when that quickness goes you get rocked and knocked out. Fun to watch while it lasts though. Joe Calzahgee perhaps had the best of both worlds; could do the hands down thing, but also wasn't shy about covering when he needed to.

I think it ties in with the confidence part, because when you strike like he does, you'll tolerate the slaps and whacks if it opens the opponent up for something that finishes them. It's predatory and you notice the top strikers with KO power always getting bashed by, I think boxing purists, about low hands. That a wobble in boxing means nothing unless it goes to a decision, in MMA, it's usually the beginning of the end. You have to be predatory, you have to be ready to get that shot that gets the result, and that's delivered best when the other guy isn't set and defensive and ready. Confidence in what weapon you have, so tolerance of those hits, but never wanting to leave the hunt for a moment, that single mindedness of getting what you want. That cavalier defence hinges entirely on the effectiveness and efficiency of the offence.

Such an awesome topic to cover Gabriel, I honestly think the main weapons of Alex are his endurance, to endure shots, and counter back, and as well as his power, that he can knock people out cold with his hands, even Sean Strickland confirmed that Alex Pereira has tremendous amount of power in his hands, these are some points of mine, and thank you so much, for making this awesome video Gabriel! 🎉

I am also puzzled with Pereiras lack of sound defense mostly because he can take hits and has the touch of death with his left hook. Pereira trains with the mayweather style of baiting someone into throwing. The fear of getting hit doesn't really exist because you're specifically waiting for the punch to come so you can pull or turn your head to slip and counter. Its something Canelo picked up from fighting Floyd and he uses it all the time now. Lots of feints and doubling up can neutralize it

Love your stuff. ^6X world champ who explains really well and is so generous with info. Thank you. And the internet is a blessing this way. I wonder if in addition to what you say about tracking aiming intelligence and skill if guys like Alex have thicker more dense at least forearms wrist and finger bones, denser even thicker fascia (tendon ligament, muscle and bone wrapping "gristle"), a very strong and very fast forearm wrist finger muscle tensing just at impact, let's say from 4 in or less the amount of tensing they can do turns their forearm to fist into like a rod of something like oak and that they can speed up so much in the last 4 inches or so we don't really see it and what we see mainly is how fast they were throwing up to the last 4 inches and so when their forearm to fist hammer head hits it makes for concussion. So, bone and collagen testing, accelerometer testing. density, how closely aligned the direction of travel of the forearm fist over the last 4 inches is to the line running from the middle of the elbow to the middle of say the first two knuckles is, how parallel the fist face is to the surface the fist is hitting is on impact, forearm fist tightening rate and intensity measurement, effective hardness measurement of the forearms fist on impact, might be some information that could add to explaining why some guys hit so hard, high speed camera filming, other stuff too, that I haven't thought of, and to how we might develop training to hit really darn hard. Everything I said here can help to explain hitting a bag that isn't moving in a complicated way, really hard but there are other things like real time aiming moving targeting and defending that is also loading up to be "measured" to explain hard hitting in the ring. Any other ideas?

People who always move their feet when they punch dont realize how much torque you can get. If you watch any great boxer you will very rarely see them moving their feet the exact moment they are punching. Thats not the case in kickboxing because everyone scared of leg kicks.

Hands down for some...hands up for most. You have to rely too much on your eyesight and reaction speed to fight hands down and regardless of your talent level you will age and the hands down style doesn't age well (understatement)...also, if the chin gets cracked at anytime then the confidence is likely to go in it's ability to take a shot, if that happens then you become a sitting duck for everybody and their dog (think about the decline of Roy Jones for an unlimited talent with "bad" fundamentals as an example). Enjoy guys like Pereira but it's probably not a good idea to emulate them.

For me personally I'm not a fighter, I've never trained in anything with the exception of tkd many years ago. For some reason though I'm able to throw some pretty mean hooks, and from what i can tell, the power seems to be generated by my thighs. I have huge thighs, a lot of fat, but also some muscle. I have a pretty big build though even when I'm in shape (which is never). to give you an idea, I'm only 5'7 and a half, and right now I weigh over 400 pounds. the lightest I've ever gotten down to is 230. Anyway, for me the trick is to squat down slightly, like a slight lunge, but with both legs, then I spring up while engaging the muscles in my thighs while making a slight twisting motion and it makes my torso whip around really fast while barely having to put any effort in. Sometimes I wonder if Pereira has a similar thing going on, just on a much higher level obviously lol.

He’s keeping the hands lower because of takedown defense. I followed his Glory career, and even tho he did some of this stuff, it’s much more pronounced since his trip to mma. That’s the only logical conclusion. When I spar with takedowns I automatically do more hands down stuff and use my range and distance for defense. Not claiming it’s the best way, but it’s definitely why Alex is doing it. He doesn’t wanna be on the ground, and he’s not a strong wrestler. Hands low has those under hooks ready. And he knows it’s worth the gamble because these guys are levels below him in striking.
