What similarities to real myths or folklore did you notice in Coraline? By the way, an interesting detail I now realize I should have included in this video is that in folklore, Spiders, Fairies and Witches are all associated with Spinning or weaving, as is the Beldam.

When I was in middle school and high school, I used to be obsessed with fae folklore. So when I rewatched both Coraline and Labyrinth, I was truly shocked at their parallels with fae folklore. Speaking of which, they even have parallels to both the Erlkönig and Shakespearean faeries such as Mab and Oberon.

@ZieleAych

@@StoryDive I just realized some of this is either a stretch or maybe something you've already covered but I will still mention what I do know and my own observations. Though, this will be a lengthy comment. I apologize for that part. The most obvious ties are the goblins themselves (as goblins are fae, and often classified as Unseelie). And actual faeries in the film. Sarah's first encounter with one is likely a nod to the fact that in the original tales surrounding fae, they're not as nice as people think they are. However, Jareth takes it even further. One thing you'll notice is illusion being a recurring motif throughout movie. From references to MC Escher's "Hand With the Reflective Sphere" and "Relativity" to "As the World Falls Down" to Jareth disguising himself as a beggar, all of that may allude to faerie glamour and illusion. The crystal balls also have escry powers and Jareth can transform objects. The labyrinth itself has several parallels with the faerie realm. Creatures are untrustworthy (many of which decieve humans by misdirection and trickery). Time moves faster than the human realm (in fae folklore, time can move centuries faster or slower than the human realm). Where Sarah spent 13 hours in a Labyrinth, it was only a few hours in her homeworld. Jareth also kidnaps a child (as many faeries do and even the scene where Sarah hears a goblin laughing in Toby's bed is reminiscent of changlings). While some argued that Jareth giving Sarah the peach is a parallel to Eve and the serpent or Persephone and Hades, it is still consistent with tales in which a human is bewitched by eating faerie food and becomes trapped in the fae realm. With Jareth's parallels to Oberon, think of his relationship to Hoggle. Hoggle is essentially Puck, in which Jareth has him do his bidding. And like Oberon, Jareth kind of tries to demonstrate his power over a woman (Sarah kind of parallels Titania in her defiance towards him. Titania was also bewitched by a fae [in this case, Puck], doing a faerie king's Bidding. Puck gives her a flower that makes her fall in love with a donkey-headed clown, but the difference is that Sarah basically saves herself whereas Oberon disenchants Titania). And in terms of the Erlkönig, in the original poem, the Erlkönig tries to kidnap a child (once again, child kidnapping) whose father doesn't believe the child despite him trying to tell the father. Interestingly, the Erlkönig keeps trying to lure the child away with promises of beautiful things (parallel to Jareth's bewitching and attempted bargaining with Sarah). Only, the poem has a much darker ending in which a guardian figure doesn't save the child. And the entire story also has a bit of a parallel to the Snow Queen fairytale. Magical entity kidnaps a boy, a girl tries to get him back while encountering strange characters along the way. In the novel version of the movie, Jareth recalls when parents would offer their kids to him (actual thing in book), which may allude to the fact that humans sometimes carried out tasks for faeries (e.g. wearing red, carrying an iron nail), though that theory may be stretching it a bit. Fun facts: Jareth was originally supposed to be a goblin rather than humanoid and they even had a deleted scene where he transforms into one after Sarah disenchants him. Jareth's face can actually be seen in several shots throughout the movie in scenes where he doesn't seem to be present. While Sarah's mother is touched upon in the novels and graphic novels, in the movie, you not only see a Jareth figure on Sarah's night stand but her mother is seen in photos with a man that looks suspiciously like David Bowie (even the Return to Labryinth series has a flashback scene where said man looks suspiciously like Jareth). Last year, they release some graphic novels (Labyrinth: Coronation) that serves as a prequel, explaining Jareth's origins. Though some details do differ from the movie, the novels, and the Return to Labryinth sequels. And last but not least, the movie had some controversy after Maurice Sendak accused the Jim Henson company of ripping off his children's book, " Outside Over There", I think they actually had to to mention his influence in the credits. I know it's a lot but I hope this is helpful.

One thing I've always wondered about is how one of the children the Beldame captured (in the book, not the movie) was described as having many butterfly-like qualities. She has wings and eats the nectar from flowers, just like a butterfly. It's also somewhat implied that she's the first victim. So, if the first victim was a butterfly-like creature, possibly a fey, it makes sense that the Beldame is a spider-like creature who lured her and other children into her web.

Nobody ever talks about how, in the movie, Coraline goes to the other world, fell asleep, and woke up in the "real world". Like, she has to physically pass through the door to go back to the real world right? Since she fell asleep, she never left, only went deeper into the other world... Right...?

It's certainly something to theorize on. I personally think she was carryed back after she fell asleep. The mice can go to the real world, why not something else? It's because the first two times she went, it was in her dream. If you look closely out the window the first two times, you'll see that there are these "swirls" outside the window. We see the swirls again in Van Gogh's starry night background when the three children come to her in a dream after being rescued from the Beldam. There's also a drawing of the swirls on the fridge, she was drawing her dreams. I think it means that the first two times, the Beldam basically came to her in a dream and persuaded her to go through the door. That's also why she got warnings from Mr. Bobinsky and the two actresses downstairs warning her not to go through the door.

It's funny that the word itself Beldam doesn't really exist in french in the french version of the film, the Beldam was referred to as either "l'autre mère" (the other mother) or "la marâtre" (wich means "stepmother" but an awful and cruel stepmother) in fact most of the time in french, to speak about a Beldam we often use the word "Sorcière" "Vieille Sorcière" or "Mégère" so Witch, Old Witch and Mean Old Lady...the word "Mégère" is not very common these days but it holds the same meaning I haven't read the book but I've watch a video of a french youtuber about theories in Coraline and she was referring the Beldam as "LE Beldam" so a masculine gender probably to not confuse our poor french ears with "LA Belle Dame" La belle dame = the beautiful woman Le Beldam = the witch that capture children and sew buttons to replace their eyes and then eat them your videos are great by the way 😏

I'm basing these on movie terms but my personal theories could be that (1) Coraline is basically a water witch, and the black cat is her familiar/spirit guide, and she's just not aware of it. and (2) Miss spink, and miss forcible are witches too. The dowsing rod scene, and the fact that wybie called what she was doing "water witching", even her name Coraline (coral), and the fact that she dyed her hair blue could tie in to that. And apparently her water witchcraft did work because after reciting her little spell "magic dowser, magic dowser, show me the well!" lo and behold, she is actually standing in the well surrounded by the fairy ring (further insinuating that the beldam/other mother is a fairy of the unseelie sort). The black cat could be her familiar or spirit guide cuz he served as her protector, and companion throughout her whole journey in the other world, and because the other world in real life folklore and mythology is more of a spiritual plane it could very well explain the existence of the cat and how he could go into places through illogical things, because he's a spirit. Miss spink and miss forcible are very witchy with the fact that theyre diviners, offering coraline tea leaf reading (Tasseography), and also giving her a hag stone, which we know in folklore as a stone that allows the holder to be able to see the otherworld by looking through the hole in the middle of the stone. Because theyre both diviners, I think they are witches in subtlety, seeing what coraline is about to go through, and offering her the tool that will keep her alive in the coming days. This is also sadly why the other kids werent able to survive the other mother in the past, its cuz they didnt have the help they needed to stay alive, so its either miss spink and miss forcible stayed in the pink palace apartments for simply rest, OR they might have saw coraline as a vision in the future before the movie and knew that they had a purpose in coraline's story thats why they stayed at the apartments?

I will say, your analysis is one of the better explorations into Neil's story that I have come across. I believe you're right about the the author's use of multiple literary works, including Steven King, and folklore to create this universe. I haven't read the Coraline novel, but in the film one detail I couldn't get out of my head was the reference to Hamlet's monologue: "What a piece of work is a man!" More importantly, why was it the other Ms Spink and Ms Forcible who made the reference? It felt to me like the monologue was the Beldam portraying her feelings about mankind, while also illustrating her greatest flaws; her pride and arrogance. I absolutely loved this film, however, I feel like the more I try to analyse it, the more questions then answers arise.

Coraline is a metaphor for a young girl coming into her sexuality and is filled with overtly sexual references and imagery. The 'pink palace', flowers that look like lips and vaginas, the pulsating tunnel, the well, etc. All the characters have a role in this imagry. Whybe is the love interest and is causing the confusion in Coraline. The other mother (Beldam) represents her never growing up, and therefor not growing into her sexuality. She is a black widow who cares nothing for men focusing on proper and sterile behavior. The two old women are what she 'could' become as a spinster, and the acrobat is the creepy aspect of older men. There's tons more but if you watch it under this premise, it's pretty damn clear.

Why do people instantly suspect malicious or deviant intentions any time someone mentions that part of childhood is learning how to grow up which includes learning to identify with your own sexuality. Sexuality isn't "harmful" to kids, intrusive manipulation and distortion of a kid's s3xuality for the gain of someone else is what is harmful to kids. Stop gatekeeping the concept of "coming of age" as if even acknowledging that s3xuality is a immensely intrinsic part of human development is somehow degenerate.
