It's nice to get lost in the woods where these old ballads appear in many many incarnations over time. One great version is Alasdair Roberts' "The Cruel Mother", from his 2005 album. A rather obscure version is known as "Bonnie St. Johnstone", included in Richard Thompson's "1000 Years of Popular Music" compilation.

it's usually considered an english ballad, because it was codified as part of the child ballads, but there are versions sung all over the british isles (and probably in other places too. it's a pretty universal story). there are variations which are sung in a geordie/scots dialect as well.

Yeah, in northwestern Italy we've got 3 or four different songs to cover the themes in this one; - one is literally called the cruel mother but it's about something else, a young adult daughter asking her mother advice on who she should marry, but the mother calls all the proposed options "good-for-nothings that roam the streets and will betray you" and she then sends her daughter off to live in a convent, to which the daughter comments "I shall pray for myself and for my good father, but not for you, o cruel mother" - one where a mother asks her daughter where she's put the baby grandchild, to which the daughter answers that she drowned it, and immediately after a prophetic "speak lower, my daughter, that justice will hear you and come get you" the daughter gets arrested and thrown "to the darkest jails" - one where a knight's daughter gets married against her will, but on the way on horseback to the neo-husband's home (... or America depending on version, lol) she asks him to lend her his dagger "to cut a wee branch to give my horse some shade", then she stabs him with it and heads back home - one where the narrator visits his girlfriend who kisses him "so loudly that her mom heard us" (I suppose that's likely a euohemism), and in response to the mother warning her that "the whole world speaks ill of you" the girl responds "let the world speak, I want to love that young man that suffered seven years, and seven months, and seven days of prison for me (and prison is cold and dark, it scares me and makes me suffer/die)" --one where one lover (genders got blurry due to male choirs eventually flattening everything to masculine over centuries wherever there's any room for confusion) murders the other, and the ghosts visits them in prison showing the wound on their heart, calling them "my unfaithful love" - one where, in one version of a widespread trope about a woman poisoning her "old and ugly" husband to "come to the dance with me", the couple's newborn child (sometimes dead and visiting from the otherwordl) warns the father of the danger and he forces her to drink the cup she had prepared for him And I'm sure there's several other tangentially related songs - many are simply "convergent evolution" given that they're fairly simple concepts but apparently some go back all the way to gothic folklore

Offhand some things I think you'd like: traditional irish folk songs, check out Colm Mcguinness. I feel like you'd like Star of the County Down Belle and Sebastian "Piazza New York Catcher comes to mind" Early the Mountain Goats songs. my ex says all white boys love the Mountain Goats, and maybe that's true idk. Radical Face "Welcome Home Son" I can't imagine you don't already have an opinion of Kimya Dawson, but if not that's another one that would suit your style.
