I have read some of the comments. I can see that some people blame the workers for being uneducated, dropping out of school and such. The circumstances in their lives probably prohibited for them to finish high school. The main thing is that these maquilas should provide a decent salary and benefits. That's the thing. All they are asking is a decent pay for a hard day's work. $160 a month for full time work. Come on! That is modern indentured slavery. This is subsistence living. Not a decent life for you or your children. Even in Nicaragua, where the standard of living is lower, it amounts to barely making a living. The working poor.

Wow! what a great documentary! Well done! Sigh, however sad that this beautiful country and people have to scrape by like they do. Is not the government of Costa Rica a model to follow?

So Nicaragua needs to have a non-crooked government that actually helps the people it works for.

They should start an agricultural program like Cuba did. Grow food anywhere, teach people how to garden and food prices will decline.

The government does not care for empowering their youth, that is the only way they can keep them controlled.

Cuba was only known for the hooker (jinetera) market, not agriculture.

The workers of the world deserve protection. People who work hard should be paid a decent wage that they can live on. They should have enough money to pay for their food, clothes, and decent houses. Going to University is expensive and extremely hard even in the developed world. People need to teach these people how to be skilled workers.

If you want an economic powerhouse.....invest in education, and in industrial development, as well as labor rights...and you have your economic powerhouse....and freedom from poverty.

This documentary is really funny. It keeps using words like "regime", "authoritarian", painting an image of "a failed revolution", and then 15 minutes in go on to say "yeah, minimum wage at these factories have tripled during these years, a lot of people support the president and his programs, but IT'S STILL BAD" The nail in the coffin is when the writer dares claim that "poverty wasn't affecting women as bad in the 90's!!!" HELLO DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE COUNTRY YOU'RE SUPPOSEDLY COVERING (the answer is obviously: no)

Maybe you need to learn geography. Central America is part of North America, the Americas have two hemisphere, North and South the divise line in the equator 00° latitude divide the continent. Central America is just a geopolitical division, however geographically is North America.

It's not communist. It's a corrupt dictatorship. If the US allowed them to sell all the coffee, tobacco and fruits at prices they set by Nicarguan owned companies then the people would benefit. But the US embargo ensures that they aren't allowed to sell shit to the world unless they are getting ripped off in the process and always to US corporations
