4:13 is massively underrated in my opinion. I didn't like it much when it came out and forgot about it. Gave it another try during lockdown and after a few listens it clicked. It's a real slow burner, songs like Switch and It's Over are immense, typical Robert rants. I saw an interview somewhere where Robert said The Hungry Ghost is one of his favourite songs he's written. Then he said that people don't really appreciate it because it's not culturally relevant, unlike A Forest. When he said that, it changed my whole mindset towards the album and I just listen to the songs for their own sake now. The Cure don't hold the same place in music as they did 25 - 30 years ago but they are still a sincere band with their own vision and way of doing things. I'd put that album in my top 5 Cure albums

Half of Wish is great - and the b-sides are better than some of the album tracks. Friday I'm in Love is like a nursery rhyme crossed with a toothpaste commercial... and of all their post Wish output - there are probably just enough truly great songs to fit on one album. 1 Seventeen Seconds 2 Faith 3 Head on the Door 4 Disintegration 5 Pornography 6 KMx3 7 The Top 8 Japanese Whispers 9 Boys Don't Cry / TIB 10 Wish 11 Bloodflowers 12 WMS 13 The Cure 14 4:13 Dream

Got to check out XTC. They have quite the change in sound- from Post Punk “Science Friction” to New Wave “Making Plans for Nigel” to Pop “Life Begins at the Hop” to Sophisti-Pop “King for a Day” to Boroque-Pop “Dear God” to Psychedelic-Pop “Garden of Earthly Delights” to Jangly-90s-Pop “Senses Working Overtime” to just fantastic pop “Mayor of Simpleton”. Seriously- take 5 min to listen to anything on that list. I wasn’t much into their later stuff (didn’t love pop enough when I was young) and it took listening to White Music & Drums and Wires to really “get it”. Ok- music rant over. Love what you do.

You forgot perhaps their best album: Join the Dots (the B Sides), so many gems ;-) Oh and "Mixed Up", excellent album of remixes. Their lives are great too. Joke aside, interesting to see your list. Wish is a masterpiece. Bloodflowers felt like a goodbye. I never got into the latest 2, and can't even remember any songs. Kiss Me is perfect, but most albums from Faith onwards work cohesively: each song brings something. Wild Mood Swings was weird: Jupiter Crash is excellent, Want just fell flat when the beat entered (I saw them live on that tour...). And Bloodflowers felt like they sobered up, were not trying to be, but were themselves (unlike Wild Mood Swings). I seem to remember David Allen producing most albums, before they changed their sound - and started sounding confused to my ears. Thanks for this video, I enjoyed it.

Do you listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees? Would love to hear your take on their worst to best. Funnily enough, when I bought a used CD copy of Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream, it came with a copy of The Cure's Disintegration inside the case (alongside the actual album I bought haha). The Cure is awesome, and Robert Smith even played in the Banshees a few times. Great video and agree with all your picks!

Great video. Very well thought out list. Can't argue with your reasoning. However here's my personal list: 1. Disintegration 2. Pornography 3. Head On The Door 4. Faith 5. Kiss Me 6. Three Imaginary Boys 7. The Top 8. Seventeen Seconds 9. Wish 10. Japanese Whispers These top ten albums I can listen to from start to finish and enjoy every song. After Wish it's a very different story. Each album has one or two songs that I like but that's it. So I'd rather shout out some of the great songs from those more recent albums than rank them. "Want"(as good as anything they ever did) "Lost" and "Labyrinth" (both could easily fit on Kiss Me) Underneath The Stars (just classic Cure)

Pretty neat ranking. Can't complain too much on the sequence, it's a personal preference I guess. For me, the top 5 would be 1. Disintegration 2. Faith 3. Head on the door 4. Japanese whispers 5. A tie between Wish and Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me Personally, pornography is too dark for me and 3 imaginary boys a little too minimalistic, but they're all good on an absolute basis I guess.

Hello, thanks for your ranking, but for me it goes like this. The best ever and ofc. number one forever is 1. Pornography then 2. Head on the door 3. Boys don´t cry/Three imaginary boys 4. The top 5. Japanese whispers 6. Faith 7. Seventeen seconds 8. Disintegration 9. Kiss me 10 Wish other albums i am not able to listen, except just a few songs. But top ten of albums i can listen all the time and whole albums without skipping songs. The cure and Joy division are forever the best of world´s music.

I've been a fan of The Cure since hearing Love Song, Just Like Heaven and Lullaby on the radio growing up. I heard Disintegration when I was about 16 and thought it was pretty amazing, but then didn't really get into The Cure until some edgy friends introduced me to all of the back catalogue as I was going through some rough emotional shit in my late teens. I went to their Wish tour concert in 1992 and saw how incredible they are live, and have been to every concert of theirs near me since. I mostly agree with your listing and comments and can honestly say my top three are: 1. Disintegration, 2. Pornography and a tie between 3. Faith and 17 Seconds. My favourite tracks are A Forest, Fascination Street, A Strange Day and All Cats are Grey. Simon's bass is sublime, Robert's guitar is unmistakeably recognisable and his lyricism is beautiful and poetic. An iconic band that my kids know - I am glad to say they have grown up listening to The Cure and I hope they love them as much as I do.

I mostly agree. Everything after "Wish" (and even some of Wish) is subpar. I bought every album plus 12"'s and picture discs up to Wish. After that I was extremely disappointed in the material with the exception of a track here and there. I have since returned to rediscovering the catalog and really hoping this much awaited next album will make up for all the filler material albums that followed "Wish". Last thing I will add for a long time "Pornography" was my favorite (but in actuality that's really hard to say since there are many faces and phases of The Cure) and my least favorite track (of the music I purchased and listened to) was and still is "Friday I'm In Love" and I still can't stand that song.

I tend to agree with this list though I would rank BloodFlowers way higher and Kiss Me X3 much lower. Otherwise Seventeen Seconds rules and glad to see it so high and Head on the Door really is such a low key great album. When I first got it I thought it was just average besides how good 'Push' is. I just wanted to drop some fast opinions. This was an enjoyable video.

A good video and a very good explanation of all the Cure records. The dark trinity albums (17 Seconds, Faith, & Pornography) and the ‘Boris’ period albums( HOTD, KMKMKM, Disintegration, Wish) are my personal favorites. That being said, I am a fan of the Cure’s entire catalog but I just like certain albums a little more than others.

I love this line up of albums and the enthusiasm; music making "your soul ascend to heaven" is very evocative imagery. I agree with the number one choice. Used to listen to The Cure a lot whilst driving around Horsham and Crawley in my, at times, misspent and gloomy teenage years, and we just loved the fact that guys were from just down the road.

The first 10 albums from 79 to 92 are all very good. The final 4 not so much - probably because the band were moving on, getting married etc so less time to collaborate and synergize with each other. For me the top 3 will always be Porn-Disintergration- Wish in no particular order. Disintegration opens like a modern version of a Beethoven symphony, with very classic synth string sounds. The whole album is EPIC. 12 tracks, but long ones so more like a double album in terms of its length. Some observations: 3IB/BDC kinda sounds like Blondie's Parellel Lines from a few months prior, just a boy singing. Both post punk meets new wave. 17S and Faith sound wise are quite close, though i dig the mournful haunting ethereal sound of Faith better. We see Smith's affinity for literature shine through in tracks like Killing An Arab and Charlotte Sometimes. Whereas the previous two albums channeled angst, hollowness, and grief, Porn is angry and energetic. It's a great gym work out album. It's also one which may appeal more to middle aged men in a midlife crisis. Japanese Whispers sounds ... Japanese. The band went to Japan to experiment with the sounds. Just One Kiss is an underrated classic and evokes the haunting imagery of lives lost to a tsunami and volcano. Alphaville's Big In Japan would fit on this album given how much he tries to sound like Smith. The Top ... psychedelia. Perhaps the most Pink Floyd influenced sound. HOTD is a bit too 80s mainstream for me, especially A Night Like This which follows a very 80s rock made for radio pop formula. The U2-esq arena anthem of Push steals the show. Kiss Me is too long. Not enough quality for a double anthem. But How Beautiful You are is amazing. They took an 18th century poem and turned it into a classic rock song about pride from the Gilded Age, and our own. And we boys all remember those girls who ignored us back in school (Catch). Disintegration - Same Deep Water is a hidden gem. It could be the opener to a James Bond movie. My only gripe is that Closedown should have been the last song - it kind of mirrors Plainsong in its sound and structure, like a single verse of Gothic romantic style poetry bookended by some of the most beautiful arena/anthem music. Finally Wish. Less concept than other albums, but just as epic. High has one of the band's catchiest hooks. To Wish has an almost classical celtic sound. Letter For Elise (Fur Elise?) is worthy of so many covers. And Deep Green Sea is a hard/alt/grunge/prog rock masterpiece. And then there are the B sides - Exploding Boy sounds like early postpunk Bono. A Few Hours is the closest The Cure gets to musical theater. And Halo and To The Sky prove they can even serve up some sentimental cheese at times.

I was lucky in that, despite growing up with the cure, I got into them around the Kiss me album. While working my way backwards through their back catalogue they came up with Disenegration. I was pretty much sold at this stage and got to see them play live around this time. I was 17, the perfect age to get into the cure really. It was my instant favourite album for the longest time although I loved everything else too. It's funny though that I lost track of them after wish and the couple of live albums they did after that. The odd time I dipped into their music after Disintegration it left me disappointed. Now nearing 50 I can honestly say that pornography is the one I come back to or who's songs pop up in my head from time to time more than anything else. I liked this album a lot when I was younger but not to the degree I appreciate it now. What an immense sound, atmosphere and intensity they created with jyst 3 band members who were not getting on so well at that time...and taking a lot of acid! I was a cure head and late to the party at that and I remain a fan for sure. God bless 'em all!

Pornography may be my favorite or Faith or Disintegration or The Top or Kiss me or Seventeen Seconds. Three Imaginary Boys(Boys Don’t Cry) , Wish and Head on the Door too. Friday I’m in Love is my least favorite song out of all the cure songs

Taking all the albums up to Wish, there are distinct categories : Experimental and diverse : Japanese Whispers, Kiss me³, The Top Gloomy and atmospheric : 17 seconds, Faith, Disintegration, Pornography. More classic : Three imaginary boys, The head on the door, Wish It's not a neat categorization, as you can find gloomy and atmospheric songs in the different albums, the same with experimental stuff, but I don't think a listing should compare, for instance, The Top with Faith or The head in the door with 17 seconds, it's unfair.

Disintegration >=Pornography >= Head on the Door > The Top > Faith > Wish > Kiss Me x3 > Japanese Whispers > Seventeen Seconds > Wild Mood Swings > Bloodflowers > Three Imaginary Boys > 4:13 Dream < S/T. But honestly I don't think any of these are bad(a 7 at worst) and the run from SS-Wish is absolutely unparallelled. I'd say my 3 faves are 10/10s easily

Having Disintegration and Kiss Me at the top of the list, when both were clearly uninspired failures, with no compositional spine, that's rather irritating...The Cure never got over their incredible success with The Head on the Door and the likely commercial pressure it put on them...Today, I still think all their albums, including this one, contained incredible material, my sweet spot production wise would be 17 Seconds, but for songwriting Robert's peak happened just after the Pornography period, and didn't last very long, imho.

Head in the Door and Pornography are my favorites. Pornography is probably the best, it's fucking brutal. Just completely consuming and moody and pissy and upset. Only album that captures that for me is Holograms self titled and Injury Reserve's By The Time I Get To Phoenix.
