The Trogly's Guitar Show Austin, you should be able to take a pickup resistance reading by placing the Ohmmeter Probe on each Volume Pot Terminal and the Pot's Ground/Case. No need to clip any wires! You can also measure the Pickup's Resistance by carefully placing the Ohmmeter's Needle Probes into the Quick-Connect Plug Terminals. I'll send you an email w/Diagrams & Photos so going forward you'll always be able to document the Pickup's D.C. Resistance/Ohms.

thanks again for another great the video trucks yeah it's funny I have for Monday at that the pickups on my 2017 firebird are called 496r and for 960 they happen to be of course mini humbuckers and then they have the 496r in the 500 like you have on this guitar I'm assuming those a full-size pickups is that true? I'm not able to see in case you haven't noticed my comments I'm severely bleakley blind so I don't know that confuses me all the time anyway thanks anyway I thought I'd throw that in there and I appreciate youyou always have an immense amount of information to give out in a very very enjoyable form so again I thank you sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist guitarist

I work on the road and about six years ago I happened to stop by a Guitar Center in another city (about 90 minutes away) as I was traveling back home. The guy behind the counter was tuning an SG Menace someone had just traded in. I had never seen one and loved the look so I bought it on the spot. The problem was that GC has (or had - I don't know if they still do) a policy where they wouldn't sell a trade-in for a minimum of a week in case it is stolen. The store wouldn't mail it to me, even though I offered to pay, so I had to drive back and get it. Totally worth the headache as it was in PERFECT condition and they sold it to me for $300 (with the Gibson heavyweight gig bag). I've seen them on Ebay, Reverb, etc. recently for anywhere from $1,500 to well over $2,000. I love the guitar and, with the ebony fretboard, it's really different. Stay safe everyone. Cheers from Florida.

Good lord, this thing has some serious snarl. I love it when Trogly covers instruments like this, because these (along with the Gothic Series, Dark Knight LP, Black Widow, etc...) are the kind of thing that could actually coax me into finally letting a Gibson into my house (albeit with a tailpiece swap and a string butler). That’s actually quite a good-sounding guitar. I’m surprised, as I’m not the core market for a guitar like this. I don’t play metal; I’m more of a classic rock/blues/country/jazz/funk sort of player, plus I’m a boomer (OK!). I was prepared for that thing to be all dark and muddy-sounding (yuck!), and instead it’s bright and spanky. I’d still rather have the SG version-easier on my old back-but if this is what Gibson’s up to these days I’m all for it!

You have to snip the wiring harness to check the ohms reading... Pop the connectors off the PCB & If they're female plugs, just stick in a paper clip or leg from a resistor, etc in the end of connector, touch your DMM probes to that, and you're good to go. It's male pins sticking out, just skip the paperclip & touch the probes to those. 👍

I have a Les Paul Voodoo, but mine didn´t come from AMS. In fact I bought if from Musician´s Friend back in 2016. Gibson offered the Voodoo JuJu not exactly as a re-issue but more as a reinvention of the Voodoo. Like a re-born or a "back from the death" guitar. It came as one of the Gibson USA Exclusive Limited Run in 2016 , and as long as I know, very few were made and were not very popular among Gibson purist. I remember when I bought it somebody in a Gibson forum called me a "Goth kid with money" and that Les Paul´s were not intended to play Metal, I never cared about that and still play my Voodoo and recorded with it several songs. The color was originally called "Reverse JuJu" cause it´s red with black filler, unlike the original ones that were black with red filler. I think mine is prettier than the one you tested, but of course, I´m a proud owner lol. I´ll be glad to send you some pictures. Gibson took down the micro site of the 2016 Voodoo at some point in 2018, but there was never a lot of information, specially about the pickups. By the way, they are called "Black Magic" Cheers es.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Gear-Tech/en-us/Gibson-USA-Stunning-2016-Limited-Run-Guitars.aspx www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-limited-edition-2016-voodoo-les-paul-electric-guitar

Gibson really gave me the shaft. I bought a Gibson Les Paul recently. Two guitars that had received - defects on both Les Pauls. It was a battle from point A to point X - where I am at now. Bought a Gibson Les Paul 2015 brand new loved the sound, but, got a broken head stock. The horrible G-tuners wouldn’t stop and cracked the headstock. They said initially, I did it. They agreed to take a look and that revealed a QC defect. The only good thing is they upgraded the guitar price wise, but come to find out that Les Paul would be out of circulation post 2018. That Les Paul had five indentations/dings they painted over, part of the binding was crushed, the volume knob fell off in a month, plus a couple of other issues. That Les Paul should have firstly should have never passed QC and sent to me without knowing it would be deformed. When I wrote about after months they responded and they suggested I send the guitar in for review. I told them I was seeking to buy another model in the near future, but wanted them to clean up the issues I was having before I did that. They had the photos I emailed them and I told them didn’t want to waste my time if they were not going to do anything. I had the Les Paul packed up in late February, but had to wait for them to get back to the shop after COVID-19 (not their fault). I detailed that if they found no defects I would want them to give me the details of what they saw before they sent it back. Additionally, I advised that I consider to make alterations to the guitar (that I’d pay for). They received the guitar - stated there were no defects with the guitar and did a courtesy set up. THEY NEVER REACHED OUT to the customer and sent it back. I was so pissed that they wasted my time and energy and couldn’t even follow basic instructions. I asked what the dings were over and over again and received the same email response that there were no defects. BS! So Gibson’s QC sucks, customer service humors and belittles the customer, and can’t follow basic instructions. Meanwhile, I keep getting emails about $59,000 reward for a ledger Gibson had stolen - who was sleeping at the switch for that one? The April 30-day Epiphone once a day give away that Agnesi had a hard-on for when Canadian contestants won. Plus the overseas giveaways. Plenty of money for Slash. Damn it! Slash, Slash, Slash - how much did Gibson pay that guy for endless “special editions?” How about Clapton, Joe Perry, Alvin Lee estate, Tony Iommi, Parnell, Cantrell - who was hardly seen with a Gibson until lately. It never ends with that. Oh yeah, don’t forget about Slash and the one million models. For the love of God! Plenty of loot for the Gibson Gazette and Gibson TV (not all bad content, but more money spent). Crap tons of money for artist editions. Especially lately. We saw a video of Gibson grinding up Gibson X guitars when you could have given them to kids or schools. I have three Gibsons. I told them, hey I have all these problems with the last Gibson Les Paul and its replacement, but they no money or integrity to take care of the general customer paying good hard-earned money. They can lick the bottom of my boots right now. I am done with buying a new Gibson or anything in their family. You should probably do the same or be taken for a ride like me. Nice Job J.C. Curleigh, Mark Agnesi, and Cesar Gueikan ya rollin’ in the loot eh, boys? I will surely be taking shots at Gibson at any chance I get. Early and often! Hardcore!

Hi Trogly. I'm a little confused with your history of this guitar. A number of years (3-4?) back I saw the big Canadian chain (Long & Mcquade) carry these guitars (version 2). I actually tried one out in one of their stores. Maybe I misunderstood your history of the guitar, but version 1 came out mid 00's or so (2004 or so?), and then I thought the version 2's (like this one) came out a few years ago (2016). Are you saying that AMS did an exclusive re-run of the version 2's in 2019? Because in the video it seems like version 2 is brand new for 2019 and is exclusive to AMS. But if that is what you're saying, I'm not sure that is correct because this version 2 instrument was available 3-4 years ago (or so) in Canada, and I remember even seeing this version 2 on Gibson's website at the time.
@AkiraSpectrum

If you Google it, the Voodoo version 2 "JuJu" was released originally in 2016. I'm guessing you know this, but the explanation of the history in the video was not clear on the version 1, version 2, and the version 2 re-issue/re-run.

Hands down (except for maybe the horizontal skull - I would have preferred a vertical inlay) the most beautiful guitar of any I've seen. As far as the weight goes, it's got nothing on my hand-built mahogany-bodied/Warmoth-necked tele. I never put mine on a scale, but 9-10 lbs. seems right.

Would’ve been cool If the dot inlays would’ve been little skulls.

Slugs are purely aesthetic and i really dig this. I lost my shit when i saw it in the AMS catalog that guitar is awesome. Also those pcb plugs, just unplug and stick your probes into the holes, or if you have aligator clip probes use a paperclip. Its more hassle than its worth. Chances are they are between 12k and 16k which means very little as the gauge of wire they're wound with, magnet and the all that jazz make the major difference.

Gibson just don’t take as much time in “finishing their guitars” yet the price tag suggests they’ve spent hours/days building it

I ordered an SG Voodoo from zzounds back in February and it was horrible... The qc was horrendous and the pups were acting all weird. I sent it back and ordered the Epi RD Artisan and saved almost $700 ( RD was $899 ) That guitar shipped with not one issue and zzounds threw in a free setup and inspection. It's an amazing guitar that I'm super happy with but I really wanted the Voodoo SG so I was extremely bummed.. My 2009 Gibson has never had any issues. Really dissapointed with them. The neck had alot of figuring in it too like his.

Yeah I was more referring to the wood leftovers in the routing that Trogly pulled out. For this money it should be all shielded, and loved. Not chucked together and biffed in a box

should be able to disconnect the pick ups, poke a pin in the connection (there is a type made for that in automotive stuff. Not sure what they are called. they are T shaped.) then you can get alligator clips to measure the readings.

I love the look of the guitar, and the red inlays. Not too sold on the pickups unfortunately, but still looks like the ultimate guitar for a vampire

The only thing I would possibly change about this is having that black binding on the body as well. Or even just staining the edge of the top darker so that the profile stands out more.

My friend Dan Catron who is a tattoo artist did the heart logo on the Gibson Menace guitars. He showed me all the submissions he gave to Gibson there were cooler ones he did but Gibson went with the Heart one. My favorite Gibson series are the Voodoo, Raw Power, Menace, Gothic, BFG, and the CM's with the robot tuners replaced with hell any tuners but those.

My favourite colour combo! Very nice, but I'm not a fan of the black binding. I think red binding might look heaps better, and as mentioned, trrapezoid inlays over the boring dot inlays. That guitar case, though! Daaaaamnn! 9/10
