The Curse of Canaan taught by Pastor Alex Kurz
Canaan curse is prophetical as Shem and Japheth are blessed prophetically
Kurz’ 6 questions:
1. Why are there three different name orders for Shem, Ham, and Japheth
2. What did Ham do?
3. Why did he [Ham] go tells his brothers?
4. If Noah was passed out, how did he know what Ham did?
5. Why is Canaan cursed? Canaan didn’t do anything? Ham had other sons Noah could have cursed.
6. What exactly is the curse?
Discusses misapplications of this curse
-black skinned people, Africans
-land of Canaan just a sliver - not Africa
Birth order: Gen 10:21 - Japheth the elder, Shem, and Ham the younger son (Gen 9:24)
Doctrinal order: Shem, Ham, Japheth Gen 5:32, 6:10, 7:13, 9:18, 10:1, 1 Chron 1:4
Land allotment order: Japheth, Ham, Shem Gen 10:2/6/21
“and…” doesn’t mean immediately (there may be time gaps)
sons of, children of, but only two “the father of”
-narrative style to direct reader’s attention
-the land is not going to go to the Canaanites but to Abram
why the emphasis on Ham being the father of Canaan
4 ways Gen 9 is often interpreted - Kurz pursues the fourth one based on the language Ham “saw the nakedness of his father”
-euphemisms
-nakedness - lust and aggression
saw nakedness - Deut 27:20-23 - cursed
-Lev 18:7-8/3, 20:11/17
-Gen 19:30ff - a repeat scenario of Gen 9
Concluding remarks of perhaps why Ham did what he did
-double allotment of land/power struggle - but this is circumvented in the curse/blessings (Japheth enlarged)
-Ham tells brothers to “document” the deed so it can’t be denied later
-“and…” curse/prophesy occurred later
-Gentiles happily serving in the kingdom
