The curse of UCL final debutants
You know an easy way to make money? If there is a first timer in the UCL final, bet on them to lose. Trust us, easy money. The new boys always lose. The UEFA Champions League final is the one place where the underdogs actually do remain underdogs most of the time. Experience almost always trumps novelty, whether or not novelty comes with talent and brilliance.
Oh, by the way, we have to say, we are not responsible if you bet on a UCL final newbie to lose and they end up winning. We only gave a friendly piece of advice from what we have observed. But don’t take our word for it, follow us on this video and see what we found out about UCL final debutants.
And what makes this really interesting is that we don’t have to go too far to prove our point. The last 2 Champions League finals had final debutants, and of course you know what happened.
The 2021 final is a very interesting example because Manchester City were favorites by quite some distance. They had already won the Premier League, and by a landslide, too. While their UCL final opponents, Chelsea, needed the help of their rivals, Tottenham, to make top 4 on the last day of the league.
Manchester City were brilliant in the 2020-21 season. They tore everywhere up. They had won the EFL cup earlier in the season and then went on to win the league in record-breaking fashion.
They were the most dominant team in Europe and clear favorites to win the Champions League. And it made sense because all the way to the final, they never lost a single game. In fact, they only dropped points on one occasion, and that was a draw way back in the group stage.
Chelsea, on the other hand, were just not as strong. Especially before Thomas Tuchel took over. But hey, don’t get it wrong, they were surely still strong contenders. If they had nothing on their side, they had the ability to beat City. They had already done it twice previously, just that season alone.
But City was so strong that all this didn’t matter to many. The blue side of Manchester was going to win its first UCL title for sure. It was written in the stars.
Well, maybe more people should have paid more attention to astrology, because they read the stars wrong.
It was Manchester City’s first ever UCL final appearance. No matter how insanely good they were, what was written in the stars was that they were going to lose.
You just have to pay your dues. That’s the sacrifice you have to make to the gods of European football.
Of course, City did pay their dues. The great 2020-21 Manchester City defense collapsed to a lone goal from a “flop signing”.
Don’t try to explain why or how it happened. Just chalk it up to the UCL final debutant curse.
Because how else can you explain PSG totally dominating Bayern Munich in the first half of the 2020 final but eventually losing? Neymar and Mbappe missing sitters that they would have normally scored with their eyes closed, but Coman scoring the first chance that came his way.
And it didn’t matter whether or not you had the most experienced or most tactical manager in the world. If that is the club’s first time in a UCL final, then they are most likely losing. You can ask Pep Guardiola or Arsene Wenger.
Your chances of winning as a UCL final debutant are very close to non-existent. Best advice? Just go through your baptism of fire early enough and get on with it.
Look at Chelsea. 2-time Champions League winners now, but they had to offer their sacrifice to the gods of football in 2008.
Their neighbors, Arsenal, also offered their own sacrifice in 2006. But unfortunately, they have not made any appearance in the final since then.
