Don’t pick up the leaves, or the pollen tassels! Problem solved, tree happier. The issue, like many in man made landscapes is trying to impose a “clean” lawn under a tree. For some reason trees growing naturally are “unsightly” LOL

Tis the way of things. People think every leaf must be picked up. One suggestion I might make is for one to plant a circle of evergreen Azalea shrubs just outside the canopy line to conceal the leaf litter under the tree unless one is close enough to see over the shrubs. This may work for those who don't feel they actually have to use that space for.... whatever.

Here in Tucson, I HATE my Desert Oak They drop from February to May. Before that is it acorns. I do not know why people choose high maintenance plants for their yards. Two other trees I hate are Palo Verde and Mesquite. I LOVE Red Pistache. They drop ONCE in the fall. No other messes made for the rest of the year. I also do not mind African Sumac. I would love to have my 44 year old oak removed. But I do not have the funds to do so. So far I have filled 5 large garbage containers full of the leaves. And peak dropping season is still a month away. Here in Tucson NO GRASS, but people love to cover their yards with rocks. It makes clean up difficult. Maybe I should concentrate on removing the rocks. A bare dirt yard is nicer anyway.

I am growing a Quercus Fusiformis "Quartz mountain Live oak" to be specific. I am in zone 6a Pennsylvania. I think that the leaves are pretty small and not a big problem. They can be mowed over, and, they provide good mulch anyway, IF you don't do anything with them. I see no curse with the leaves, they are a tree, I can't think of how anyone would NOT expect a bit of leaf drop. If a person hates leaves, they should put up an arbor with shade cloth.

@@seanwatts8342 Yeah, I know, I had purchased a Q. V. once from a Florida Lowes, and I planted it in my yard and of course, it died. I am happy that I can grow the Quartz mountain Live oak. I had received it when it was about 6 years old though, and I am currently growing a Texas Live oak, or Quercus Fusiformis. It has died back to the ground for a few years now, and it has reached up to about 4 feet tall. as of last growing season after we'd had a zone 7a winter LAST winter. I have wrapped up the top growth today since we are due for a night of 13 F soon. That MAY NOT have killed the upper growth, BUT, I am not taking any chances. I have heard that as the tree ages it gets hardier. IF I COULD grow a Q. Virginiana, I would NOT complain about some falling leaves, you guys are LUCKY, the QV get's very nice and beautiful. My Live oaks will grow SLOWLY, and I WISH that I could grow the faster growing QV. Be happy with what you have got. The closest that I can get to a fast growing Live oak is the hybrid between Q. Virginiana and Q. Lyrata (Overcup oak) they are zone 5a hardy. I do notice that my Texas Live oak (Q. Fusiformis) is much faster growing than the Quartz mountain Live oak, BUT, the Quartz mountain LO is super hardy, a FULLY zone 6a hardy oak once they are mature enough, about 5-6 years old. And, my QMLO has kept the leaves for quite a while, it may shed them next spring. It handles snow load really great too. It came from Oklahoma, so, I can't just buy one here in Pa.

Let’s add some more fun with live oaks! I have two century old live oaks in the front yard about 90 ft from each other. It’s not enough that you deal with the leaf/acorn drop, followed by the pollen drop for about a month. My two oaks are on different schedule by about three weeks. So when one side of the yard is just ending the pollen drop, the other side begins its leaf/acorn drop! You just shake your head and think about the beautiful 10 months of joy they bring you 🥲

It is now now spring of 2023. An ice storm caused wide spread tree damage in Austin. All trees were hit, and because the live oaks still had their leaves, they suffered more than most. If you are going to plant a live oak, you should talk to a reputable nurseryman about your choice of tree, because different strains have very different growth habits.

Two trees in the front yard. I rake up six bags a week at least and it doesn't stop. Constant leaves, grass doesn't grow, yard looks like shit. I'd put up with it if the trees grew something that you could eat but these trees only grow leaves and don't tell me that they are a good mulch either because I've got a dirt yard that will prove that theory wrong.

@KassCeeBee honey, story of my life! Lol We have one remaining GIANT southern live oak on my parents property. I live in Savannah Georgia I swear twice a year for 2-3 months each time… pretty much half the year I’m a slave to this tree. It’s not even mine! Lol it’s my parents. My mom is at avid gardener with a manicured yard. No hiring. We did it as chores as children and now with my parents having arthritis and back pain, I’m out there every weekend right now. Sometimes my sister and nieces help out once a month and mom preps food and my dad gets on the grill. So that’s nice, but I’m tired of spending my days off clearing the yard so it doesn’t kill the grass and the flowers and the garden. While it’s so majestic and beautiful, my parents are thinking about cutting it down. My parents cut the two down in the front and let me tell you, all the grass and flowers grew like they were on steroids lol absolutely beautiful… but I sure do miss those trees. To think the last one will be cut down saddens me. But I understand my mom… she’s worked that garden and yard to perfection for 25 years. Heck, we all put blood sweat and tears into it lol. It literally could be featured in a home and gardens magazine. My parents aren’t wealthy so they can’t afford landscapers like that… But tbh I care so much more personally for the tree rather than the grass and garden. Tough decisions. When they aged the two trees in the front when they had them removed, they were 400+ years old! I felt so terrible. But the leaves also make us have to clean gutters, trim limbs that grow over the house. It’s so cost cost and time consuming to keep it. But it also adds so much property value. I donno what they are gonna do, but if they do get rid of it, I’ll have a lot more free time on my hands lol

@@veg.1813 please give me your magic bc lord have mercy the amount of leaves swamp the soil and causes root rot on our garden and kills the grass if we don’t clean it up at least once a week during shedding season. 😩 I don’t wanna have it cut down but that’s lookin like the only option. Not just for the grass but the cost of maintenance of limb trimming, gutter cleaning, clearing leaves from our garden beds. The list goes on. We are all just getting to old to do it anymore. I’m 40. My parents are 70. I don’t even live there lol 😂 but I gotta help out mom and pop… can’t leave them hangin 😫 🤦🏻♂️ send prayers lol 😂

@@mickiwelsh2926 I have a giant one in my back yard. You mow towards the tree chewing up the leaves. I rake once a year in little 1ft tall rows and light them up. What's left I shovel up and put around other trees or in the garden. The guy is right it is laziness. It's very predictable when the leaves are gonna fall so a roll of thick plastic underlayment can be put down for those that cant work a rake. The acorns can be vacuumed with a shop vac. None of that matters if it's as pretty as mine. When people come to look at it they rarely look at the ground as the sprawling limbs are the eye catcher!

My parents live oak in southern Georgia is a pain in butt!!! We are looking to have it removed. We had the front yard removed. It was aged at 400+ years old! That was 8 years ago. But with my parents being elderly with bad backs and arthritis it’s become too much for them. Heck even for me! I’m out there every weekend. My parents have a gorgeous yard, climbing roses, jasmine, hydrangeas, azaleas, you name it… but these leaves if not cleaned up, kill the grass and swamp the soil and kill the garden. So we are thinkin about having the back yard one removed to. It’s honestly sad. I would just let the tree exist and screw the grass in the back yard lol but my mom has work so hard on her garden and yard for 20+ years. So I get it. It’s back breaking labor tending to that beautiful tree. Limb trimming, gutter cleaning, raking leaves every weekend, cleaning it out it all the crooks and cranny’s of the flowers and garden beds. Ugh . Help! lol
