But what I really asked is, how does this interact with Warlocks? Let's say you've got a Warlock with a Far Realms patron. Does the attack count as his doing, or his patron? I have a lawful evil character who’s a warlock with a Celestial patron. Neither side of the pact was tricked or coerced into it; they were able to create a mutually beneficial relationship. One of my favorite moments was when he accidentally released a tiger upon a town while trying to get something from inside a wagon. But since nobody saw him do it, he was later (after getting the item he was after, of course) able to trap the tiger inside a ring of fire, making himself seem like the town’s savior. Ironically, this only put the party at a net neutral in terms of reputation in the town, since other party members had previously done some dumb stuff that culminated in them killing a town guard while my character (and I irl) was elsewhere. Tl;dr: It’s fun having a lawful evil character who is also the voice of reason in a group.

One major note about the effect with the Pact Primeval, that only applies to one from the same planar "region" as the character. This was my favorite villain from an old campaign because they never figured out it was the Uncle Iroh looking tavernkeeper who kept tabs on them with his imp familiar (he had 3 lvls of sorcerer). He used contracted people to do his dirty work. They die going after the party he kept their soul. An endless stream of random stranger attacks. They couldn't figure out their connection. They went up through the infernal chain and skipped right over the harvester devil. He continued to act as a spy for the ice devil that ran the slaver/fight ring in the Underdark sewers.

A funny concept I have for an NPC harvester devil would be one that makes very silly trade offers exclusively for shits and giggles. For example, this one will offer you 5 platinum each for all of your collected “souls”. If you for someone reason decide to accept this contract because your group doesn’t collect souls, all of your equipment will suddenly become uncomfortable to wear until you realize that this guy took all of your SOLES and all future equipment you buy will have their soles magically vanish.

One of my favorite characters was a lawful evil Tiefling rogue. His grandfather was a Harvester Devil. But what's one of the rules of Magic in DnD? Magic cannot *CREATE* wealth or objects of value. Just full-stop can't. Illusions of it, sure. Transmute lead into gold, all day long. But it cannot conjure gold from nothing. So all those merchants trading their souls for gold? That gold has to come from somewhere. And who amasses more gold than successful adventurers? So Grampy Brimstone hit on the idea of creating his own mafia-style family, populated by tieflings and other outcasts, and raising a generation of adventurers to fill the coffers he uses to trade with suckers. They take on a mafia-style family culture, and it's all about 'supportin tha family, ya dig?'. Gold. Jewels. Art. Tomes of rare spells. Skulls of unique creatures. Blood of exotic monsters. Maps of distant lands. Everything has value to someone, and there's always someone who will trade away what they have for what they think they want. Now, this means that the entire family is destined for the hells themselves, and that's more feathers in grampa's hat as well, but the highest earners? The made men? They get a special pass, they get to skip the centuries of torment and skip straight to infernal promotion, becoming Abishai in days instead of decades. That was my character's goal. To make it as a 'made man' so impressive, he could skip Abishai and get promoted straight to a fellow Harvester Devil.

As far as creatures you LITERALY can't attack makes me think of The Cow from WoD / story teller system. Would be funny to put The Cow in DnD with how murder hobo some people are. In DnD stats The Cow would be a normal cow save it would have INT/WIS maxed out and has true sight, and will watch with particular intrest things that are supernatural, hidden away, or using powers to hide there true self. (as it finds them curious) Otherwise it is a 'perfectly normal cow'.... well it dose have very very taisty milk. That and if anything tries to harm it, it instantaneously plane shifts to some safe spot, if the place it would shift into is not safe (say you set up a trap for it) it also displaces its location some distance to a safe location. It is also capable of several spontaneous intintnaious plane shifts to avoid harm. I think it's unaging too? lol Considering it's origin of a spirit of chaos fused with a cow it's likely in DND it would be a fae cow and plane shift between the physical world and the fae wylds. But it's just meant as one of those mysteries you arn't supose to be able to figure out..... because like despite it's REDICULOUSLY high inteligence it thinks and acts like a dumb animal besides the fact it can see and watches things it shouldn't be even aware of. Monk would probably love it. XD exspicaly considering the fact for it to have such high mental stats but if you mind read it, it's thoughts are .... well.... animistic in nature..... means it's a zen MASTER, clearly! lol The Cow clearly has reached iner peace. XD

God, there could be so many ways to play such a character. Like, imagine making him a Mr. Beast level of likable philanthropist. Just spreading wealth and prosperity in fun wild ways and only people in the right spots going to hell for it. I could also see such a character 'cleaning up' the underbelly of a city. Feed the poor, make them his spy network, make sure they follow the law - BAM. They go from chaotic evil to lawful evil, so their souls go his side of the underworld without even a bargain being struck. Guards love him because crime is down. Charity balls to rebuild infrastructure means the lords of the land don't need to put all their funds into rebuilding themselves, and everyone has a good time. Now he's so likable that he can easily take whoever he wants.

This gave me an idea for a campaign for a good/ neutral party wherein each of the PC's parents signed a deal with a devil for their children's souls, taking effect once they reach adulthood. The devil would give them missions to complete, effectively making the BBEG also the main quest-giver. The tasks would start off innocent enough, but eventually devolve into heinous acts of world-ending evil. Would be interesting to see how far down the dark path the players go before trying to get out of the contract... assuming they even try at all lol.

TBH this is one of many cases where D&D's focus on dice rolls seriously hurts the fiction it wants to model with those dice rolls. "Cosmic law prevents any mortal from throwing the first punch against this infernal diplomat" becomes a much less interesting sentence once you add "unless you make a saving throw" at the end. A game like Fellowship would just say you can't harm it if it's done no harm and kept its word and be done with it.

Heard that thought about imprisoning the devil, and immediately I thought 'What if that is exactly what the devil wants?'. After all where better to find a whole heap of desperate people with maybe a lack of morals than a big prison. Combine that with it getting out that there is an infernal deal maker with some real power behind them in a known location. Well then all those rich and powerful people with lacking morals will suddenly know just where to go to make a deal. Introducing corruption into the prison's defences and guards as they circumvent it for their own wants that can then be taken advantage of.

A quick note: Like the video points out, diabolic pacts require *consent* . You have to know what you're getting into, and what the consequences will be. You can't be pulled into one without your knowledge, or awareness. Or without having been given a reasonable chance to understand all that. End User License Agreement, anyone? Less lighthearted: when we're young, most of us think "Wow, that's dumb, I'd never make a Faustian bargain!" And then you get older, or have very specific, unhappy life experiences. And you learn that no; you'd never make one for your *own* sake. That said: These videos consistently remind me of how desperately much I miss the *lore* that used to come with each new supplement. And it's weird, because it's not like 5e didn't include lore in its books: every single Monster Manual entry is a more complete exploration of how that creature exists in a world than any of the comparable 3.5 ones. But I fight to think of any of 5e's supplements that made my imagination soar the way the Fiendish Codices did, or anything they've released that was quite so chilling as the description of the Far Realm in 3.0's Manual of the Planes. I know there *is* an explanation, I just can't quite gauge why. A reluctance to worldbuild to the same degree with their supplements instead of their adventure modules, maybe? Or maybe just a reluctance to explore lore on the *scale* of worldbuilding instead of JUST an individual creature's place in a setting. Goodness knows the writers they have now are beyond up to the task. Chalk it up to the same questionable decisions that have been so good for content creators. We wouldn't have a bunch of Dungeon Dad videos if they'd just updated many creatures like they probably should have. That we *do* have them is an argument for this particular timeline, I think.

@@brettwood1351 Canonically how it would work. Also that sounds *amazing*. Note, however, that per these rules the entire premise of Descent into Avernus can NOT happen, because only one guy agreed to it in full knowledge/ with reasonable access to full knowledge. So anybody wanting to make use of this element of Devilkind needs to think about how it will fit into their campaign(s).
