I recently moved out of Medellin to Mexico. I was in Laureles and Estadio for two years. I got tired of feeling the distrust and dislike every time I stepped out the front door. I felt like someone was always looking at me as their opportunity. Overall I am glad I spent that time in Colombia because it is a neat and beautiful place. I have heard someone say that Colombia is not tourism ready and I agree with that.

There is a saying in Colombia that I will paraphrase as "It is on you" to take care of yourself. Colombians never take responsibility for all the things that are messed up. Like, being late all the time is not their problem, or you stand in line to be checked out in a grocery store and the clerks are too busy chatting to each other to bother actually providing customer service. Seriously, this place has a maddingly slow pace of life. You either roll with the punches or get out. This is why Colombia will never become an economic powerhouse. The only people who hustle are the criminals.

I've been in Medellin walking the streets every day for almost 8 years and have never felt in danger. Nothing really bad has ever happened to me but since since I left the States 9 years ago I've been asked for loans many times and for handouts every day. In Medellin and in Mexico the pattern can often run along the lines of a sick relative needs an emergency operation and I am the only person who can save their life; implying that if I don't, then I'm the lowest of the lowdown. I'm adept at explaining my way out of it and it's usually that I just had to send an enormous amount of money to a very sick relative and I need to send money back home every month to pay for assisted care...stuff like that. Regrettably, I'd rather lose a friend than lend money. If you do you will lose the friend anyway on top of never getting repaid the money. Still, I've adapted because the good things far outweigh the bad things. I've got roots here now and life is good.

Well put. I don't feel any real danger walking the streets. The case of Jesse in the video is something different - flashing jewelry and getting to know too many people too long who know too much about him. @gnolan4281

Where were you when these things happened? Were the requests constant and happened often? Were they new friends or people you'd known for a long time? The reason I ask is that I don't want to give the impression that my refusals to part with money say more about me than about the would be borrowers. I lived in Omaha for 30 years and in Miami for 33 years and was only asked to lend money twice by people I knew very well for years, one of which was by my boss of 6 years. I gave him 5 grand. Being asked for money was outside my experience and suddenly it became a daily experience. Hola Brando .. Just stumbled upon your channel, *DISCLAIMER* I just want to start by saying Colombia is full of welcoming and wonderful people in general, crime and petty crime can happen anywhere. However as someone who has lived in Medellin a couple years I have to say thank you for sharing the truth! So many other KZitemrs do not . I don't want to hijack your platform for my own opinion but I would like to share a couple points. With regards to gentrification here, yes I sympathize I understand it affects locals. However the question needs to be asked, those Air B&Bs that have gone up 50-80% in the last few years, it is Colombians themselves in most cases that are the owners of these very Airbnb's and restaurants that are overcharging. So I guess it could be argued it is Colombians themselves that are part of this" gentrification" problem. But I digress it is just a thought. You mentioned your friend "Jesse" wearing his fancy watches and gold chains and when you said he's lived here three years this really surprised me because everybody knows the saying here "No dar papaya". On the other hand I never defend thieves or robberies by saying it's the victims fault. However as you said yourself even you don't wear your phony Rolex here because you know it will attract the wrong people, and that's just a fact of living here. And to his would be assistant "Andrés", another sad but true fact evidenced in your very own story of your friend Jesse, you simply can't trust anybody here. And I say this because my own "Paisa" wife has taught me this about living here. It's sad but it's just part of the culture due to the history and the development of society here over the last 60 years, it's not going to change anytime soon and it is what it is, sadly. I will finish by saying this city is full many great and wonderful Colombian people. Unfortunately there are many, many people just waiting and watching you as a foreigner to take advantage at the next opportunity, and in their eyes we are seen as nothing more than a possibility to make easy money, and by any means to do so is acceptable to them. With regards to living here long-term , I really don't understand why people do it, there is so many other places that are so much more safer and just as affordable as you mentioned, Vietnam the Philippines or even Portugal for a few of examples. As for me and the only reason why I'm in here is I'm waiting for my wife's C- - - - - -n visa, and then we will return to my country that has its own problems, only different. Well I've said my piece. Look forward to see how "Jesse" made out with his confrontation with "Andrés" ?? Cuídate, y mucho suerte a todos!!

Hey brother - thanks for the thoughtful comment. All great points. If I make a "should you move to Colombia" video, that's pretty much the script. Spot on. As far as Jesse goes, he confronted Andres who seemed to be a sort of pawn in the game for the real bad guys. Andres started crying and pleading for forgiveness, that he got involved with bad actors, etc. Jesse had some other guys he knows make sure it won't be a problem going forward, but he hasn't left the house much. And about other places, you're preaching to the choir - I'm going back to Vietnam asap.

You must understand one thing, you are the ones who have to adapt to Colombia and not the other way around, but you always fail in that, not only here but wherever you go, the nations welcome you with open arms but you just want to continue being gringos, you want to change everything where you go and that only complicates things for you, this is Latin America no matter where you go, it will be like this, you do not understand our lifestyle or our culture or the problems we have here, you do not understand why we are happy with so many Little, if you left your country it's because it's not as good there as it is here, but if you want to bring your country here then why did you leave? If you want to live here, you must be like us, otherwise you will have to leave, people here are not xenophobic because they are foreigners, they are xenophobic when someone wants to impose ideas or cultures, altering the cost of living in a city is something delicate, it is a form of invasion that despises the original residents, here nobody earns in dollars or spends in dollars we manage expenses to control the cost of living, if you do not measure yourself in expenses you alter that balance and harm everyone regardless of the standard of living and That doesn't make anyone happy. This is not the USA where money is spent without measure, here everything must be measured by the way,,,if u want a peaceful life here u really chose the wrong city. there are 3 cities in colombia that we colombians wont chose to live peacefully those are in order from worst to even more worse *Medellin *Cali *Bogota there are many cities and small town that are very very peaceful so peaceful that even we dont know then of heard from then in the news examplo of them *Tunja *Neiva *Valledupar *Pasto *Monteria see man u just pick the wrong place

Using the police against another citizen or person is asking for trouble because that will not end there. Here the problems are not fixed with lawyers. If you really want to know what you need to live here, you should consult with trusted people here. and even so, care must be taken, here contrary to the American custom of showing wealth; It is something that is not done except in closed social circles, showing money is bringing serious problems on top of one. Here the money is hidden from those around me, including my girlfriend or friends until they prove that they are absolutely trustworthy, and even so one must be careful, the statistics here usually prove that the majority of property crimes are originated in the close social circle of people. Regarding the cities, it is good to consult very well with the local tourism agencies, they will give you good information on the best areas to live. I hope your stay here is good and pleasant and you get to know more about our country, Colombia is not just Antioquia and to be honest, although the paisas are very good people, Medellin and its surroundings are not good for foreigners

@@good2go619 The point is that the price charged to Americans is not the real or commercial price, it is an inflated price determined by our opportunistic culture, the mere fact of sounding like a foreigner makes the merchant obviously alter the price, and the foreigner pays because You don't know the real price, it's not the American's fault for paying, the fault is not knowing the prices before so as not to pay those exaggerated prices. Here, if one pays, one accepts the consequences, nothing can be said later except through legal means and well, here that can end badly.

I can definitely imagine the people in these places getting hostile about "digital nomads" and the impression, right or wrong, that they're making things too expensive for the locals. I thought it was interesting that you made a comment about Colombians being hostile towards white people. That comment make me think that it's the poorer, non-white portions of Colombian society that tend to be most hostile to the gringos.

That's a pretty accurate observation. The wealthier Colombians here who own property and businesses stand to benefit and the poor population just gets F'd! Can't blame them for being salty. Future digital nomad types might want to be more sensitive to it. The situation in Mexico City got a bit out of hand and the same seems to be happening here.

The spot I'm at isn't bad. I dig it - just a regular neighborhood where it's easy to have a normal routine. The trouble in the video actually came from the nightlife in Poblado. Laurales and Envigado are solid recommendations tho. Thanks for the comment!

Belen is no ghetto. There are ghettos here in Medellin that will make you think Belen is wonderful.

@@gnolan4281 I'd recommend Belen for people coming to stay here for a week or so. You don't have all of the chaos of Poblado. Or the hills. Laurales would probably be my first pick. But here we have Unidad Deportivo - the free outdoor sports complex, which is rad!

Yes! Colombia has some racial issues but that’s against the local Afro and indigenous population. Race has nothing to do with some Paisa’s wanting foreigners out of Colombia. Foreigners are driving up the price of living in Medellin. My friend worked his ass off to purchase an apartment in Sabaneta. He lost out to a Canadian this type of situation is infuriating the population.

@@rickyticky3350 The guy who manages my building has a .38. He ran outside and fired a few rounds to scare off thieves who were trying to steal purses and wallets at the restaurant next door. He's pretty badass. I don't think the weapon is licensed, but in terms of security he'll do the trick.

I don't wear a watch at all. One of my friends had a guy point a gun at him then point that he wanted the watch. It's just not worth the risk.

I would agree - don't wear a watch at all. Someone could see the watch from a distance and just assume it's worth money.
