The Darkness weren't and aren't a spoof of glam rock so much as a love letter. When they came out in 2003, British Rock was on the tail end of the height of Britpop and was taking itself quite seriously, while there was also a lot of mainstream pop dominating the charts. The Darkness were very much about just injecting a bit of fun back into rock music and it was very much needed in the UK music scene at the time.
