There isn't half as much story in BG1 and 2, but Minsc's is kinda cool. In the first game, he has a "witch", a magician called Dynaheir whom he is sworn to protect. Then in the second ... Hang on, you might just play them some day, so I'd better not spoil! I guess you can't understand Boo because he's an alien (a miniature giant space hamster) and not an animal! (There's actually a book about miniature giant space hamsters in the Druid Grove.)

I've done both endings with Seluneite Shadowheart, and while both are beautiful, the choice to save her parents resonates the most with me. She has sacrificed so much- too much- and hasn't been able to keep anything that was her own. Loss is all she knows, and she doesn't dare to hope or keep anything for too long. I look at saving her parents as a way to spite Shar and reclaim her family and her own story. She deserves people in her life who truly love her, even if they may never heal from the experience. Her parents also deserve that time with her, even though in this scene they may have been desperate for her to be free. I also played as you have so far, letting the character make the choice when possible. But I love what you said about true friends having emotional investment in their friends choices. After Shadowheart made what I thought was the right choice by not killing Aylin, I thought non interference was the way to go.. but then you're forced to persuade Astarion away from ascension, which i think many would agree is his path to real healing and happiness. That made me wonder if maybe other characters would need more effort on my part to find what I consider to be their happiest potential. Of course it can be argued that letting go of her parents allows her the freedom to move on from Shar and her curse entirely. But I wonder about that logic- as Aylin mentioned, Shar and Selune are equal and opposite (and without spoiling, Aylins response to this choice really drove this perspective home for me). Shar's wound makes me think of depression, or grief. Shadowheart carries it everywhere and it flares when she is connecting with others, or feeling hope, or perhaps any emotion that has ties to the presence of Selune. It is a constant reminder that she will one day lose these people or good things. But does it truly weaken her? It can be a struggle to enjoy life with the knowledge that all things end, but being able to hold both truths at once makes someone very strong in my opinion. Continuing to carry Shars wound intentionally is a very powerful image, one that has inspired me personally. Anyways, thanks for reading this far- how lucky are we for an amazing fully formed work like BG3 that spark meaty discussions all over the internet? Really enjoying following your playthrough so far!!

Yes, there is indeed a parallel in quite a few companion stories. They are connected to some powerful entity (Cazador, Shar, Mystra, Mizora...) and because of that did things they would not have done otherwise (like helping to kidnap people, hunting Karlach or seeking to use the Weave of Netheril and Carsus), which hurt them in some way, made them doubtful of before some horrible choices, so now you influence their decisions of what to do about said horrible choices and entity connections and how to try to go on.

Also, it always makes me a bit teary eyed every time I get Shadowheart to see her parents in my playthroughs. Her mum looks so much like mine, she's old now and you know, it just looks so uncanny sometimes that I often get disturbed by Shadowheart's final quest. There are some other BG 1 and 2 companions I'd love to see; but most probably died long before the beginning of Baldur's Gate 3. @patrioticbat

Doubtful. Shadowheart is already getting her powers from Selune from Act 2 onward and her wound, while painful, is only a very momentary thing. I agreed with your opinion on my first playthrough, but at the end of the game Shadowheart confessed to me that she regrets not enduring the pain and saving her parents. She will also make the decision on her own to save her parents if you help her to remember her past before going to the Sharran hideout. I mean, really, think about it. Isn't it worth enduring momentary pain from time to time on your hand if it means getting to save and live in joy with your parents? If anything it makes even more sense for her character development because she's showing that she can endure the pain and refuse to play Shar's game. Regardless of the petty pain that Shar will inflict on her, she will endure and live happily with the ones who care about her. This is also the world of DnD, so finding an alternative way to cure her wound later down the line is certainly not outside the realm of possibility.
@VeelouC
10 ай бұрын
@patrioticbat getting powers from selune is not the same as being a selunite, and remember when she spared the nightsong the pain was so excruciating she thought she would die from it. Shar is a scary goddess and she enjoys suffering and punishment. Loss of parents is something we will all inevitably endure and overcome, but this way the suffering she causes her is stopped, whereas if she's still tortured by Shar whenever Shar pleases she remains her plaything. Plus when they die if you've spared the nightsong they turn into moonmotes and continue to guide her, and this is something that i would highly doubt Shar would want. I understand both sides, but it seems to me like a better narrative choice to sacrifice her parents for her to be finally be free and live her life as she pleases without her past still tormenting her. Also I did the house of grief towards the end of my game, so I guess I failed reminding her anything to make her want to spare them, but I never interfered and at that point she's the one living with the decision so I let her do it.
@patrioticbat
10 ай бұрын
@VeelouC Well, as far as the loss of parents go, there is a very high chance that Shadowheart's father will outlive her as he is a high elf, and she is only half elf. The thing that really bothers me though about letting her parents be sacrificed is that Shadowheart openly regrets it and she will be stuck with that guilt for her entire life. It would be very difficult for me to live with myself knowing that I could've saved my family and chose not to just because it would spare me momentary pain. Shadowheart has also been facing an identity crisis for the entirety of the game and her parents, if left alive, would be able to help her remember who she was before her life was taken from her. I understand both sides of this decision though, I really do. There's certainly a level of comfort in knowing that if she sacrifices her parents that she will be free of Shar's curse and can start anew, forging her own identity, but again, she is left very unhappy and regrets her decision if she takes this route. It's really not clear to what extent Shar can torment Shadowheart aside from the pain we see her face in the game, which she has already grown to live with, and is usually very brief. And also, like I said, finding a cure for her wound after literally saving all of Faerun and preventing the grand design should certainly be possible through calling in some favors. It's still a very difficult decision, but at the end of the day, Shadowheart and her parents are very happy if they are saved and they get to be together, whereas Shadowheart is left with regret and is miserable if they are sacrificed. Basically either choice you take is gonna lead to an imperfect ending, and both are valid, but I feel like Shadowheart making an informed decision (finding details around the city of her past) is better than her making an ignorant one. I've also RP'd wearing those warding bond rings with Shadowheart and my Tav so that her pain is halved and shared with Tav.

Absolutely love the rp bit with the warding bond rings. I'm using them with lae'zel so that in case she has to leave in the endgame, her and tav can still be connected. I adore seeing others find rp moments in little things like that I gotta agree that in the case of a long form story, I prefer the idea of keeping her parents alive and hunting for a cure (similar to not ascending astarion and looking for an alternative for his sun walking issue). It pushes the same message that Wyll's story does with saying "F these two choices, I'll save them AND myself." In short form media like a singular game however, I do prefer letting her parents go. Though I would've preferred that she remembered more of her parents when letting them go, in a singular game that doesn't have an apparent way to find a cure IN story, I think it wraps up her arc in a more satisfying way I also just sent and essay lol but I LOVE seeing discussions of story arcs and could not resist

Hello again! Had to do some catching up with your BG3 videos, and I have to say I really liked your reaction of watching sunrise with Bae'zel (her VA has said in interviews that scene is/was one of her, if not the, favourites), and I am glad you did give her a chance. Based on Larian's own statistics unfortunately not that many does and IMO miss one of the better companion story arcs even if you don't romance her. She's such a loveable poet. Now on to the matters at hand. I'll try to keep this short and sweet but as someone who has shown at least some interest in giving previous games a shot I think you should know: I do like Shadowheart's story, I do think overall it is one of the best ones in the game. However, as someone who has played the previous ones, I do not like how they portrayed Viconia in this game. I have no idea what Larian was thinking when they wrote her into this. Like Jaheira and Minsc, she was a possible companion in previous games but I wouldn't call her 'a legacy character' as this version has very little resemblance to the BG2 Viconia other than sharing the same name and race. They even retconned some stuff to make her a complete nutcase. In this game she's a zealot, a one-dimensional fanatic of Shar, and her sole role is to be a SH's stepping stone and a villain without any redeemable qualities. In previous games, especially in BG2, she was multilayered with a complicated backstory and personal traumas. In fact, you could consider her to be Lae'zel of BG2. This is already getting tl;dr lengths so I'll leave the details out. What I am trying to say is, if you eventually start playing previous BG games and you meet Viconia, don't judge her because of how she was in BG3. There are reasons to not take her with you game mechanics wise but she does have one of the most rewarding character developments.
@CuriouslyKay
10 ай бұрын
Yeah since playing, I've heard a little bit about how Viconia was a past companion. Much of that discourse mirrors what you're saying, that she feels completely out of character and underserved compared to like Jaheria Not sure if you played the Dragon Age games, but the way you describe her sounds like Morrigan from Origins (who is one of my favorite characters in gaming). Kinda sucks that they would make a past companion end up like this, especially because her characterization would've been cool if she WAS just a one-off character

@@CuriouslyKay funny that you mentioned Morrigan, she and Viconia (the original version) were both written by David Gaider. But yes, Morrigan in Origins is pretty similar. Initially seems cold, pragmatic, sarcastic, arrogant... sound familiar? The whole BG3 Viconia thing really sucks. There is no reason for her being the Supreme Mother, or in the game to begin with. If her name was changed it would have no effect on the main story nor on Shadowheart's personal story. If they had revealed she was a doppelganger or given any other reason why she was so OOC it would've made it so much better. (Shar captured her, made her forget and molded her personality to be what Shar wanted. And that's just from the top of my head, it's not great but it is something. They already did that to SH, and now "Supreme Mother" is shown as a victim like her, and the player has an another road to explore.) Aw shucks, usually when I start to go on about story arcs, environmental storytelling and such, I usually just get ignored and/or weird looks :D Much appreciated, and thank you for your playthrough.
