Am I right in thinking all these wild iguanas never existed in Florida? All this is because of humans owning them as pets?
@sdean4816
7 ай бұрын
Yes, that and I believe it was the early 70s a large hurricane came through south Florida which is a port for pet importation and many of the facilities were destroyed and many non-native animals escaped

@@sdean4816it was Hurricane Andrew in 1992 that caused the release of Burmese pythons. Iguanas are hypothesized to come from a variety of sources; notably from the trade in exotic plants, which an absolute crapload of lizards have traversed the tropics and subtropics of world through. Green iguanas dominated through the Caribbean because of the horticulture trade, not the pet trade, and is likely to blame for Florida invasives as well. Iguanas further will raft along debris in the Caribbean, allowing population interchange between Florida and Caribbean islands. Regardless, it’s more than just the pet trade. A few loose pets do not typically establish themselves as invasives; it takes massive population introductions in the hundreds which usually leaves wholesalers to blame, and the trade in exotic plants typically provides a viable route for eggs buried in pots and hatchlings hiding in foliage to be transported worldwide.

That's what the hunters all say, they came from hurricanes and people letting them go.

Can you create a very large net with a large opening held open by a large tube and lay that net in the field fill of bananas. This large net would be like a large open mouth bag. You would let the iguanas just crawl in this netted bag. Once the iguanas crawl into this netted bag just close the opening and gather up the bagged iguanas.

A specimen like that should be placed in a zoo or relocated for people to appreciate. One day iguanas of that size will no longer exist..

I love Orlando and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. The little geckos we have here are cute. However, If those things start showing up, I’d be outta here so fast, all you’d see is a cloud of dust in my wake. 🫤 Keep doing what you’re doing. We thank you.
