ANALYSIS Alice is shunned from the rest of her peers because she acts strange. We're told she acts "perfect" but also told that "everyone in the nursing school got along well EXCEPT for Alice". Even annoying, perfect acting people can make friends, so the idea that everyone got along EXCEPT Alice suggests that something was unsettling about her behaviour, even if the Author only mentions how she was a perfect student. One thing mentioned within the story that seemed very odd and that I think highlights part of the theme is the fact that "[Alice] didn't even bite her fingernails". Persumably, nursing school is difficult and lots of nurses have nervous twitches. Nail biting is a nervous twitch that can be seen by others. You don't have to watch someone bite their nails to tell if they are a 'nail-biter'. It's a way for others to recognize that you're stressed out despite your demeanor. Alice seems to have no difficulty with the school, and lacks outwards signs that something is wrong with her or stressing her out. It's this lack of outward weakness that the classmates don't like. Think about the symbolism of the prank for a minute. "The students borrowed a hand from a corpse they had been studying in anatomy and hung it by a light chord in her closet.". How does one BORROW a hand from a corpse. The author doesn't say that the students "borrowed a hand they had been studying in anatomy", it specifies the weird detail that this had been borrowed from a corpse. This is clearly an oxymoron, as it demonstrates that the students took the hand off the corpse without thinking that it can't really be returned to the corpse (obviously, studying anatomy you would look at how joints and bones connect and using a severed and re-attached hand would not be useful for learning). The students went to GREAT LENGTHS and risked themselves being in trouble with their school just to make Alice uncomfortable. The idea of making Alice 'shake hands' with a disembodied hand is deeply symbolic. It's been established that Alice's hand is a symbol of her perfection because of how she "doesn't even bite her fingernails". A handshake is often used as a greeting, even in hospitals. By making Alice shake hands with a dead man's hand, the author is demonstrating how the perfect Alice has "met" her classmates, and they present themselves as something horrible and disembodied. This idea of greeting someone's "true self" is flipped in the end of the story. The classmates are expecting Alice to be horrified because from her perspective she accidentally just shook hands with a corpse. That is to say, the classmates are expecting that through this prank they'll meet "the real Alice", an Alice with weakness. What they really meet is an insane Alice. Alice isolates herself in her closet and is fixated on the dead man's hand. Alice is clearly derranged. The line "The joke had worked but nobody was laughing" really sums up the whole story. The goal of the prank was so that Alice wouldn't appear as 'perfect' to these classmates anymore, but where they were hoping to uncover human qualities in Alice they only find that Alice is insane. THEME - People may present themselves as paragons or idols without any internal conflict, but it is ultimately up to the perspective of individuals to recognize that nobody is perfect and everyone has some sort of weakness, even if it's not easy to tell at first glance. It is wrong to try and push these people to "act human" because theres a chance that deep down they're crazy and it's better to let them act perfect than act crazy.

There's a fine line between being funny and being cruel. Sadly, pranks today go this route and the people pulling them don't care whether or not it hurts their intended victim.

+Limey Figdet I think a big thing about this one is that you're supposed to expect something supernatural to happen but that's not what happens. Instead the fear is just about finding a Dead Man's Hand in your closet. Essentially, it's scary because it's more real than the other stories. But all that essentially happened was Alice saw the hand and got mentally wounded by the shock.
