My step dad used to be really deeply entrenched in Millwall hooliganism, growing up in Nunhead near the stadium. Told me all kinds of stories from smacking up the NF trying to sell news papers in their pubs, to massive riots and facing off horse charges, cops taking off badges to get away with brutality. Working Class have a strong sense of unity, football teams create sense of collective identity, not surprising during economic hardships football firms would boom when young men want a cause or outlet. Also isn't surprising far-right thugs targeted football hooligans to join their movements. If only these lot could come out for real political change the same way they come out to fight eachother.
@Ballsdeepsport
Жыл бұрын
I don’t think you’d like the political change either West Ham or Millwall would bring in. Both us and Millwall are two sides of the same coin, and politically speaking both fanbases lean right. The proof is the voting patters of where most West Ham and Millwall live nowadays in the Essex and Kent. A lot of people associate working-class and progressive politics, and it just doesn’t match. Not in England at least.

I wonder if anyone can explain something that has always seemed an anomaly to me - how or why a club representing an area north of the river ended up playing south of the river? I know a bit about the history from Wikipedia etc, but it just seems incongruous to me. I understand the original players and supporters lived on the Isle of Dogs, but nowadays most fans live in Bermondsey. Is it really accurate to call the club by the name of a different place?

There have been just 27 fixtures between the clubs in the last 105 years. What I can't work out is this: is the rivalry so fierce because the game is so rarely played or despite it being so rarely played? I grew up further out into South East London in an West Ham-supporting family. When I see what Lewisham Council was doing to Millwall a few years ago, the logical side of my brain recognises that a couple of seasons in the Premier League would allow Millwall to secure their future and the legacy of football in that area. However, the West Ham fan in me cannot stomach Millwall in the Premier League.
