Australia has the highest median net wealth per person in the world. Median is a far better measure than mean as mean is skewed by outliers - eg billionaires which make the mean high. It's far more equitable than many countries in the world. Many factors like $30 per hour wages for entry level jobs, forced saving into superannuation (10% of all earnings that gets essentially reinvested into Australian businesses), housing which is in demand from foreign buyers - the middle class derive a large chunk of wealth from, stable government and a well managed RBA which avoided the 2008 recession etc And with multinationals not being taxed, that's every country. It's not that they don't want to, it's just that you cannot. How do you tax a company which is registered in the Seychelles or Dubai? Good luck 😂. The rich don't pay tax because they have good lawyers and their assets are based in countries where there are favourable tax conditons. If any country raises new levies or taxes, they can just move their wealth somewhere else

To receive the full pension at 62 you must have been paying into the pension fund for 43 years. "The amount of the pension is determined by three factors: Average Yearly Income (RAM): average yearly income is the gross earnings on which contributions have been paid. RAM is calculated on the basis of the member's 25 best-earning years. Payment rate: the maximum rate of 50% is reduced by a percentage determined by the difference between the number of quarters credited and the number of quarters required to receive the maximum rate, with consideration for individual's age and total period of insurance. The most advantageous calculation for the individual is used. The minimum rate is 37.5%. The total length of insurance, including periods credited as periods of insurance, is used to determine the payment rate of pensions paid between the legal minimum retirement age and the age of automatic entitlement to a full pension (between 62 and 67 for persons born after 1st January 1955). The 50% full rate is payable to individuals having a total insurance period of 166 to 172 quarters (depending on year of birth), aged over 67 (for persons born after 1955) or belonging to specific categories"

Many western governments (including here in Australia) have an unsustainable reliance on personal income taxes for revenue. It's currently around 45% of government revenue here in Aus. As our populations age this income will continue to dwindle, and making changes to increase tax or years of working is not in the best interest of the majority of people. AI and advancing technology will throw more fuel on this fire as it will take over jobs currently performed by people and there is no current tax on work done by AI and automation. For the last 20 years the west has tried to offset this problem through a large intake of young, working migrants, which has created social problems of its own. The solution perhaps, is to increase the proportion of government income obtained from corporate entities. This solves a few issues and supports an aging population, filling the shrinking worker pool instead through improved efficiency, automation and AI, taxing that productivity from the businesses directly. The problem? Businesses have huge power and influence over politics, and they dont want to pay any tax. So when will elected officials be held accountable and work for the people, rather than the ultra wealthy business sector?

She is not far right. In theory she is more centre than Macron except on one point, she finds that Muslims are getting too numerous for France's security but since those Muslims are also far right in their own way, that doesn't change Le Pen's position on the political spectrum. The problem is that as happens with nearly all middle of the road politicians is that she is extremely dishonest.

As a Brit who knows retirement won’t be until I’m 67, I look at this a feel - wow. France’s retirement is (currently) 62. I’m sympathetic with dealing with these changes, but when all is said and done, pensions have to be paid for. In UK we’ve gone from retirement age in the 1950s of 60. Then raised to 65. Then to 66 recently, and will go to 67 in 2028. In the 1950s life expectancy was under 65. It’s now about 80. How do you think these pensions are going to be funded? Incredible. However, I do commend the French population. They certainly know how to protest.

62 is baseline, most people would retire at 65-66. The reform would affect mostly blue collar workers.

Australia just reached peak retirement. Broadly I think capitalist countries are experiencing societal degradation whereby, to put plainly, there are no more trees to cut down (gross simplification), and therefore prices will rapidly increase. Got money chasing too few goods and specialised services (blue collar).

Not capitalism, but indeed socialism that are failing. France is one country that taxing their people to the neck, to funded old people. For sure , people became lazy because there are no insentif for become rich ( socialist paradox ). The middle class people are the most suffer in this system, high tax to pay old people and social safety for the poor. France before are proud european, but feeling guilty long ago before the german because of napoleon. Wake up france...! Make children, make family, go back to church, go back to proud traditional value...

Yeaaa naa ... you can't generalize this to taxing and socialism ... that's a very reductive approach to a very complex system. The DEBT and all the useless money printing is the REASON NUMBER 1 for France's need to cut on their loss

Based on these arguments , what would be peoples responses be if you asked them if you should have to pay taxes or speeding fines . France is the most comprehensive welfare state on the planet . Did you know if your retrenched you earn 70% of your salary for 6 months on unemployment benefits . Did u know the working week is 35 hours . Did u know the government hasnt had a budget surplus since the 1970s . Its great that theres a safety net to protect the population but on a micro scale you cant keep spending more than u earn . Some argue tax big companies but that will simply drive them offshore taking jobs with them . By not implementing these changes is kicking the can down the road pushing the problem which will be much bigger onto future generations .

No, France's welfare system is clearly defective though very costly as it was built mostly to justify the numerous comfortable white collar jobs of those who manage it, not so much to help the clients. Welfare doesn't allow any one to survive unless you cheat which often happens. Many other EU countries do better.

Just because the president is making them work a little longer 😅 the French are so entitled. He should scrap the pension scheme altogether. No work, no pay. Reserve the pension scheme to those who really made a difference and the physically disabled people. There’s opportunities everywhere around u, learn a new skill and find work, invest properly, or stay strong so u can stay in the job. People are living longer so therefore the retirement age should be longer .

You missed the main reason - because the French protest everything! Literally every second year there's 'huge protests' in France over something. It's cultural, going back to the French Revolution. They just love a good protest.

Yes, that is true. It's like reliving the history. When you come from a past of severe repression, it remains strong in your heart, and they will give up nothing that they fought so hard for. Canada and the USA started as a democracy, but now we're losing, slowly, picking away at the regular folk who struggle, not the ELITIST.

The notion of 'generious' needs disussion. Given the working class of France, like every other country, create the wealth, what does 'generous' mean. Enough to live off. Too low. Enough to get by. Too low. Enough to access food, homes, power, water without those with needing to fall in line with those who have power and wealth? Those who control resources through the necisity of work. If thier so confident in what they offer as work, in terms of human fulfillment, give us access to the neccessity of life mentioned above without their intermiediate status. Lets see what they really have to offer.

I dont know guys but sometimes someone has to take hard/unpopular decisions. 64 is still ok, comparing to other countries. I had no idea until now that you can retire at 62, so early. Those pensions can't be paid if there are not enough people to be put at work, that's the reality.
