We have recently been struck by the number of visitors to the shop who turn up wearing something like a Rukka or Klim jacket, but without the matching lower half.
In this video, we talk about the increasing propensity for motorcyclists to wear a technical, textile motorcycle jacket over, or above, a pair of jeans.
It’s something that took us a little while to come to terms with, because our first thoughts were that it doesn’t make sense to combine a waterproof jacket with a distinctly non-waterproof pair of jeans, but having discussed it with a few customers, and having given it some more thought, we started to realise just how much sense it did, in fact, make.
It comes down to this.
A textile jacket is a mighty useful garment. It will keep you dry. The membrane will also serve to keep you warm, because it will also act as an insulator and combat the effects of wind chill. If there’s good venting, that will be a bonus too. You may also get a thermal lining. And, of course, the armour, will protect you should the worst happen.
But the beauty of a heavy-duty motorcycle jacket is that you can take it off when you arrive wherever it is you are headed. The problem is that you cannot do the same with the jacket’s matching pant. Put on a technical pant at the beginning of the day, and you’ll be wearing them all day. And a textile pant, with its heavy fabrics, membranes, liners, armour and so on is not nice to walk around in off the bike.
All of which explains why so many bikers now prefer to wear jeans with a technical jacket.
Now jeans are not perfect. Okay, so they’re super-comfortable, they are easy to walk around in, and they can be way more protective than any textile trouser. But jeans are not that warm, and they are pretty useless in the rain; although some Merino leggings and a set Scott waterproof trousers will help to overcome these concerns.
This way of dressing for the bike may not work for everybody. If you commute through the winter, or do huge mileage in all weathers, a traditional suit may still be your best bet.
Anyway, we’ve done a video on the subject, because sometimes a video can explain something more easily than words alone.
So if you want to better understand what we’re on about, watch the video.
