First of, I love your videos!! Thank you for making them! Are you different?????? Question, You made the claim that other youtube developers feel that they are the strong one in their videos on youtube (Makes sense, many religious folks have never looked or anylyzed thier own beliefs...sad but easy for someone like the Amazing Atheist who comes from this society of the southern bible belt, would have extensive understanding and experience!) Now you had to know that I would have to ask, what makes you different? Love to see a video on how you're different than all the other youtuber!! Are you different?????? Are you gonna kiss the ass of the religious credulous? Or reach out to the educated? I'm just sad that many of the older generations are so entrenched into their beliefs, I'm just surprised they didn't care more for the future of their families!!

The topic of man-spreading reminds me of when I broke my leg. When I was 14, I broke my knee, tibia epiphyseal fracture. It was swollen to twice its size. While sat in the waiting room with my broken leg straight in front of me, I was told at least a half a dozen times to sit like a lady. I told these guys that I have broken leg and was in severe pain. This was no excuse to not cross my legs like a lady according to them. Oh the hypocrisy.

This reminds me of a couple years ago when I fell while running and busted my knee open right across my kneecap. I was wearing shorts and hadn't shaved my legs in a while bc it was january. They were wheeling me into the ER, I was clutching the top and bottom halves of the skin of my knee together, and this old woman sitting at the reception desk had the nerve to say, "Bet you wish you'd shaved your legs, don't you?" I was so in shock from both the injury and her comment that I didn't say anything at the time but the thought that I should be concerned about the state of my legs while literally having to hold the pieces of my knee together pisses me off to this day!

Once when I was 12 I went to a nail salon with my mother and sat with my legs comfortably open. My mom told me afterwards that the guy painting my nails had pulled her aside to say that the way I was sitting wasn't very ladylike. I still vividly remember that, because it was the first time I had ever heard of how women were supposed to sit a certain way, and the way my mom told me made it seem like something to be deeply ashamed of. I was 12 at the time so it's pretty gross that the guy thought I ought to behave like a "lady" when I was a literal child
@pigeon2503
3 жыл бұрын
@@julesmallow The argument shouldn't be "men should not sit with their legs open!" it should be "we shouldn't restrict something as arbitrary as a sitting position to gender, and then shame people for non-conformity". I feel like the people who talk about men-spreading as this all-terrible thing has missed the point. (though I do agree that some men - not most men - some and a rare number of men - sit in such a way that entirely dominates the space, but I don't think this is a problem we can solve by policing the way all men sit. This comes under a lack of boundary respect and not be accommodating to other's needs. This isn't really about sitting, I don't know why the sitting aspect is highlighted so much).

In regards to “putting in the effort”, it’s not just transphobic, it’s classist as hell. Because that “effort” is really bloody expensive! Especially if you’re in the US. It’s not always a matter of personal choice, or “effort”, sometimes it’s a matter of finances. And to say someone isn’t a woman, or a man, or isn’t trans, simply because they’re too poor to afford to medically transition is a really fucking horrible thing to say. Especially when you have transphobes who want to make sure that medically transitioning is never covered by insurance, or by universal healthcare. So then it would only be the richest 10% (or less) of the population that could afford to medically transition. And then consider the fact that trans people are far more likely to live below the poverty line than cis people, and you have this awful mess of transphobia and classism that makes trans people’s lives so much worse. And it makes that “effort” belief of Blair’s so much worse. She should know that it can be impossible purely because of financial situations, and that trans people are more likely to be in those positions. But she still thinks she has the right to determine who is and isn’t trans, effectively deciding that a poor person could never be trans. That’s not even counting the ridiculous idea that all trans people must follow the exact same path in transitioning, or else they’re “trenders”.

Even if we take surgery out of the equation, it’s STILL expensive to overhaul your entire wardrobe!! presenting socially as another gender is still financially stressful! Blaire makes exceptions for people who can’t get surgery but she forgets how much money (and time) she probably had to spend to buy/learn how to use makeup, overhaul her wardrobe, buy accessories, and “put in effort” that didn’t include surgery. HRT, too. She makes that criticism allllll the time and uh, news flash, Blaire, lots of insurance companies don’t cover HRT.

@@MaiSent I still watch Sargon and Vee and this hasn't been my experience with it at all. Before them I was very closed off politically. I would watch John Stewart and some lgbt youtubers who covered politics and that was it. I didn't want to hear anyone else because they were all stupid, right? I was the morally superior person and I didn't care what other people from the right had to say because they were racist homophobic bigots. That was actually how I thought. The only reason I got out of it was because I got recommended a video by Blaire about the definition of transgender and I thought it would be something that agreed with me, so I clicked it, and I felt dirty after watching it because what she was saying made sense to me, but I wasn't supposed to think that way. I never considered that somebody with those beliefs and her identity was possible. My entire worldview was shaped around my identity as a gay man and member of the lgbt. Being exposed to all of her content, and then later content by other youtubers broke how I thought the world worked. I had such ignorant black and white thinking before that. It was completely delusional and only served to make me feel better about myself rather than to explain the world around us. I'm really sorry that it was such a negative experience for you, but I think a lot of it has to do with how we are as people and what baggage we bring to these communities. I brought a lot of baggage, and I had a lot to learn from the experience, and because of that it's been one of the greatest positive influences in my life.

It's not uncommon for little girls to be regularly shamed for sitting in certain ways, or for taking up too much space as being "un lady-like", and those messages can sometimes go in deep and effect a person's entire life. Men, who generally aren't raised with those messages (either explicit or impllicit) may honestly just feel like they are sitting normally, and not asking for anything above basic comfort. But to a woman who was raised with different values and held to different standards, it might seem really arrogant to her for someone or take up that much space. A man, like BigJoel for example, might see those men sitting, and intuitively feel like a perfectly reasonable amount of space, but fail to realize that to a woman raised with those different values, it actually does seem like an excessive and luxurious amount of space to take up. Not necessarily because it objectively IS, but because what women are used to is so constricting. It's interesting how much our own experiences in life can shape our perceptions about something.

All of this though. It's just... I mean... I'm sure there's nothing actively malicious about the decision of some guy on the bus to V his legs so far apart that his knee was halfway into my seat space and pushing my knee around, but it was a lot like this thoughtless and presumptuous entitlement to my space. And the fact that he seemed visibly uncomfortable when I held my knee ground so that our legs were awkwardly and intimately pressed against each other-- shifting, glancing at me, all around looking unsettled-- but he *didn't move out of my space*-- apparently anticipated I would use up even less of my space to make him comfortable again, even though at this point it'd mean me sitting at a weird acute angle on my seat with my feet out in the walkway-- was bizarre.

You just reminded me of a memory. I was a cheerleader in 7th grade and we wore our uniforms to school on game days. At lunch I was sitting on a bench with my knees apart, like a boy. We wore cheerleading bloomers under our skirts, so that's all anyone would see if they happened to see under my skirt and our conservative school had selected skirts that were a bit longer than the high school cheerleaders' skirts, but another girl yelled across the school yard and told me to close my legs. I gotta say something about Ben Shapiro: One of his mantras is "facts don't care about feeling", but just a glance at his video's comment section, and you see that his videos trigger a broad emotional response. In the end, it's goes like this: Ben talks about a subject "objectively", he deliberately triggers an emotional response in a term called "emotional marketing", where he targets and triggers one emotion (usually anger in his videos) and uses it to make people remember him/his product. And this is the key. This is what he profits off. That's how he makes his living, totally acceptable. He makes his profit out of that emotional response. The cycle is basically: video-emotion-reaction-publicity and then people come back to his videos and it all starts all over again. This guy doesn't have and agenda, he's a money maker. And he knows his marketing strategy very well.

Ella Bartal I agree with your description of Ben Shapiro and his place in the discourse as a fast-talking git, but the fact that he uses emotion to engage his audience to buy into his shit doesn’t really address your point on his “facts don’t care about your feelings” mantra. I’m gonna have to bite my tongue, try to be charitable, and pretend for a minute that he’s not just a bad actor, but when he says “facts don’t care about your feelings” what he “means” is that no matter how hard one wants something to be true, facts will not change. Now there’s the discussion on the validity of one person’s “facts” versus someone else’s “facts” (i.e. the same study/statistic can result in different conclusions based on a variety of factors) but that’s a different discussion entirely.

@@samseymour7004 I get what you're saying, but what I meant in that is that if "facts don't care about feelings", and all he does is trigger that emotional response, then what he does is "sell" emotion for self gain. Basically, what I was trying to say, is that he's a salesman under the appearance of a debater, that says that he dosent care about feelings, but manipulates people with those emotions. Maybe it's not that much of a great explanation tho...

And it's really dangerous (to women and marginalised people) It's selling rationality, but not really, as in his and his fans' reality there's no place for fact about feelings. Feelings are, not perfect but are informative. And are crucial for our wellbeing. Personal, but societal too. We can't have healthy functioning society without caring and empathy... In reality his anti-intellectualism is hidden behind that catch phrase. Hypocrisy at its maximum. I watched almost every skeptic video between 2012 and 2017. I believe the switch to criticizing SJWs was easy around 2015ish because there were a few videos of hysterical activists that were just so easy to "destroy". This lead me to watching every video of Dave Rubin from the start, but then I realized that he is all about 'the free marketplace of ideas' but never talks to any of these 'regressive' liberals on his show. I also realized that I had never actually met any gender activists that scolded me for using gendered language. I then realized it was all cherry-picked and wasn't a real issue worth 'debating'. This came to a head when I was talking to my sister that told me she is a feminist and I told her not to take away my Zelda franchise fandom and make Link a girl. The look on her face absent of words was all that had to happen for me to realize I had no idea what feminism was. I wish they would go back to criticizing religious fundamentalism. That is a real issue that needs to be debated.

I swear it didn't used to be that bad, and I'm not even that old. And unfortunately, I'm a gamer myself, and I can't enjoy video games anymore because the communities are so toxic. I don't want my own separate space. I'm just tired of assholes everywhere. Sorry, this is becoming a rant. I think this video misses a crucial aspect of Blaire White's take on trans people and pronouns. Joel frames her argument as you get to have the right pronoun if you put in the work. But her point is a bit different from that. Blaire's position is really about an intersection of gender identification and *wealth.* To her, trans rights are, or ought to be, a commodity to be purchased. If you can't afford the surgeries, then you're not really trans. Blaire is not just transphobic; she's also classist. Or to put it more simply, "Fuck you, got mine!"

I remember watching Amazing Atheist videos as I left the church and I thought they were great, but as I grew up, I grew out of the “New Atheist” movement. So while I grew up and got into feminist/ humanist ways of thinking, I saw that entire community (Sargon/ thunderf00t/ ArmoredSkeptic, et al.,) doing the direct opposite. And while I saw that, I quickly detected what they all had in common: hate. Religion was never the problem, hate was. @@denizkaragullu6239 I completely understand what you're saying (I think). To be honest, even in lefty circles, the discussion of Islam is still a huge source of controversy/disagreement in the West (or at least in the U.S. where I live). A lot of liberals especially (and I don't necessarily mean leftists) defend all aspects of Islam and Muslim culture because they see the absolute dehumanization/prejudice against Muslims from the right wing, so they try to be the "opposite". But in doing so, some of those people don't have always have nuanced views and can often give cover to some of the more problematic issues within Islam (especially women's treatment). I think many on the left want to support Muslims and their freedom to worship and practice their religion and not be treated in a prejudiced way (as is their human and constitutional right), but struggle nonetheless to confront some of the more problematic issues within Muslim culture. I say "Muslim culture" because I am aware that some of the more bigoted views that some Muslims hold are not based strictly on the Koran itself, but developed over time nonetheless and became a part of how Islam is practiced today in many places.

@@brennam954 i think it's exactly this. a lot of western pro-islam brigades i've encountered have only ever seen muslims interact within a society that heavily restricts their religious belief and expression (e.g. wearing hijab, burqa, or niqab; going to mosque without risking being assumed as terrorists). as such, that informed their point of view that muslims as a whole group should be a "protected minority". and i do think it's true in some places -- there are countries and regions where people being visibly muslims be it from name, clothing, or even daily routine would likely put them in danger -- but they completely dismiss other countries and regions where muslims are not only _not_ oppressed minorities, but they're the ruling majority and almost inevitably, that also means having conservative religious fundamentalists in positions of power which inform the regular people's day to day experience -- especially if they're not muslims or "not the right kind" of muslims. personally speaking, being from a muslim-majority country i encounter various types of muslims on a daily basis. i was also born and raised in a muslim family, so i've experienced being part of the group and enjoyed the status quo perks, as well as being ostracised and dealing with various levels of discrimination after i denounced the faith. as such, am aware muslims as a group isn't a monolith that all share the same belief/interpretation of how to live according to islamic values. but whenever i participate in online discussions about islam, especially if it's in english-speaking spaces, i'd have to reiterate that point over and over just be taken seriously and avoid being called an islamophobe. even then, sometimes that effort is meaningless, lol. likely because north americans (usa, canada) and western europeans (particularly uk) are often the dominant voices in these spaces -- and they're the ones who live in a society where being a muslim means dealing with daily instances of prejudice and even violence. i know some people (muslims, ex-muslims, and non-muslims) from similar background as i am who opted out from these spaces because it's hard to have that balanced, nuanced conversation since a lot of the dominant voices are just unwilling to consider that the group they'd been infantilising could also be the oppressors in other parts of the world. it just gets tiring after a while. not only due to the feeling of constant dismissal, but also for sometimes being told our bad experiences couldn't be true and we're islamophobic for pointing that out. anyway, sorry for the vent. i haven't peeped online discussions regarding islam for a while due to the aforementioned reasons but i sure hope it's getting less black-and-white. because two truths can be true at the same time: minority muslims are dealing with pain of discrimination, _and_ majority muslims are inflicting pain of discrimination. until everyone can agree on that, i think everyone will also just suffer the consequence of the dismissal of one truth in favour of the other.

I liked Blaire when I first found her channel because I saw her attacking predators, notably Onision and Jessica Yaniv Then I found other videos where, in one of them, she said she didn’t want to use they/them pronouns for non-binary people and essentially said they aren’t valid, and then in other videos she repeatedly attacked trans people for their appearance

Your point at about 8:15 reminds me greatly of those who went from supporting Bernie Sanders to supporting Trump in the 2016 election. Shaun (the beloved skull man) made that point in a video about the "frog men," that while from a policy perspective that switch in loyalties makes negative sense, these guys were more about trying to be as anti-status quo as possible, regardless of where that left them. Similar thing here, where for fans of "skeptics," it was more about defying cultural expectations and saying "we wont listen to you!!" Personally, I was raised by atheists, so I never had a "defiance" phase regarding religious views, and therefore was never drawn into this crowd. I feel a bit lucky there.

@@empanadadequeso1 "Dehumanising" means portraying someone as not human. The clue is right there in the word. Examples of dehumanisation include referring to human beings as vermin, or as parasites, or as scum, all of which suggest non-human-ness. A man is human, so referring to someone as a man is not dehumanising. Your Newspeak terms "identify as" and "identity" are meaningless. An "identity" has no more existence than a "soul". A person who denies a person's "identity", in the sense in which you use the word, is not doing anything more problematic than a person who denies a person's "soul". Hey Joel, As someone who grew up (I'm 21 and have been watching TJ's videos since at least 2010) watching and listening to the skeptic community, it's been really difficult seeing all the pioneers of it fall down a rabbit hole of reactionary tendencies and social cynicism. It's a far cry from the warm blanket of rationale fiery analysis that initially attracted 12 year old me towards those videos. After all, it's the prodding at unfair societal that really made that early Atheist Tube what it was. Now, in some twisted, roundabout way, they've become the people they rallied against, advocating for the "logical" concepts and rules of what is traditionally considered a "community," but that ultimately oppresses those who are marginalized (whether they know it or not, and in a lot of cases I'd argue they probably don't know it). In my opinion, it's people like you who are the true lineage of the skeptic community. You systematically pick apart and analyze social matters and flimsy arguments, and in doing so explain why something isn't morally or logically up to snuff. I really appreciate the work you do and I can't wait to see more~!

Here’s my take on these: when these types of channels were really big, I was going through the phase where I realized I didn’t believe in any of things I was raised to believe as a Christian in the South. It’s not great to be an atheist down here. They were cathartic. Helped me vent anger, put words to what I was feeling, and let me know I wasn’t the only one and wasn’t just flawed. They served their purpose. With that being said, over time, the more I grew comfortable with my beliefs, the more similarities I began to see between these people and the ones I disliked so much on the religious side. Extremely complex topics boiled down to intellectually vapid sound bites. I finally realized they’re all just making money, I believe what I believe, and we should all talk about something more interesting in our lives like how’s your job going, parent’s doing ok, best concert you’ve been to recently, and we should hang out and enjoy life sometime.

Fortunately it wasn't spurred on by youtubers or the likes such as those mentioned in the video, but simply as a reaction to how I saw my disbelief in opposition to my religious upbringing, and was basically me unairing my dirty laundry with religion. I would have to say because I didn't have any ties to KZitem (I don't think I really watched it until university, in 2015), it was easy to finally realise my vitriol was unfair and was painting everyone with a broad brush simply for their beliefs, when the issue is how some people and groups twist their beliefs and force it upon others, not people having religious beliefs in the first place.

At least none of the cases that got discussed. There absolutely could have been some, but of the half dozen or so cases I remembered from my time, they all happened in dorm bedrooms, almost always with someone the victim knew and had invited in under friendly impressions. So if you're concerned about sexual misconduct, your time is really wasted on bathrooms.

I would watch hours of this kind of content daily, but at some point I took a hard turn away from these people as I found myself disagreeing and finding their arguments disingenuous. Largely around feminist issues and this anti social justice obsession. I was coming into myself as an adult in terms of ethics, but having not really been exposed to other content at that era, and never stopping being an atheist I've long since wondered, "What the hell happened anyway?" It wasn't me that changed, per se, besides being better able to articulate myself and interest in putting theory to praxis. In retrospect it really was was just such a weird aesthetics focused shift, and I appreciate this video a lot for putting that together for me. Cheers.

I remember when the atheist community on youTube was just starting, and I knew it was going to go down a bad rabbit hole. Like you mentioned, they were arguing against a group that wasn't in the room, except, like their response to feminism, I don't think that _was_ anything but a surface argument. Sure, you had some very vocal religious people spouting what was being argued against, but it was like buzzfeed making their feminist videos. Talk to an average religious person, not to mention a person with a seminary or theological background, and you would get an answer that you might not necessarily agree with, and it might be more emotion rather than logic based, but would definitely be a ton more nuanced with a lot of the religious people _themselves_ thinking about the exact same questions. It was already bad. Even then, the videos existed solely sake of helping pump the feeling of intellectual superiority in the viewers. Atheism isn't bad, but that sort of attitude is.

Channels like Shaun and Hbomber are a reaction to this development, but they also stand in the same line of tradition in a way. The left-leaning content that has been gaining momentum over the last couple years functions according to the same logic as the skeptic movement that preceded it, and is vulnerable to the same pitfalls, as evidenced by the fact that "skeptics are stoopid cause they don't care about evidence" is one of the more liked comments on a video that champions a much more nuanced position.
